Overview
So I made a guide for FNaF2 that was decently well received, thought I’d take a crack at making one for this game too.
Gameplay Basics
Welcome to hell. No cameras this time.
The Doors
Anyone who played FNaF1 should remember these, they work differently this time around however. Now, in order to close a door you have to run up next to it and hold down shift in order to keep it closed, doing this leaves you vulnearble to all other sides of the room, so only do this to defend yourself if you know something’s there, speaking of which…
Listening
This game highly focuses on audio cues, headphones advised.
- When next to a door, wait a few moments, if you hear a breathing sound, that means you need to close the door.
- On later nights, you can hear and see the closet door close.
- You’ll be able to hear just about everything before you see it this time, this only becomes more relevant on Night 5…
The Flashlight
Making a return from the second game, the flashlight is the only way to see pretty much anything.
- Everywhere you check will be obscured in darkness, making this your only way to see.
- Using your flashlight while at the doorways will allow you to see down the hall, at any approaching animatronics, if there are any.
- This will also kill you if there is someone at the door, use with caution.
- Using the flashlight on the bed behind you is the only way to ward off the Mini Freddies that gather on the bed.
Nightmare Freddy
Unlike the last games, Freddy will be active starting Night 1, giving you 3 threats on the first night. However, he plays a far less active role, remaining under the bed. The only way he can attack you is if the “Mini Freddies” are allowed to stay on the bed for a long enough period of time. A maximum of 3 will appear, and the more there are, the longer it takes to clear the bed, and the less time you have left. Another thing is if they remain on the bed too long, the flashlight will begin to flicker, warning you and also hindering your vision. Other than that, it’s fairly self explanatory, simply make sure to keep an eye behind you.
Nightmare Bonnie
Back again, and lurking in to the left, Nightmare Bonnie makes his appearence yet again. Bonnie will be active starting Night 1 and attacks via the left hall, but unlike FNaF1 he can be a serious threat if you don’t understand how to deal with him. When checking the door, it is advised to wait a moment or two, and listen for any breathing, if none is heard then check the hallway with the flashlight, if you do hear breahing, hold the door shut and wait for movement outside the door, this will indicate he is gone and you’re safe. You can hear Bonnie moving about if you listen closely, so use caution when checking the door. It should be noted that if you close the door and Bonnie is not outside it, you’ll only attract him closer, meaning if you open and check you’ll die. Don’t let fear get the best of you and be patient. You can catch him at the end of the hall before he reaches the door you can slow him down a bit. However if you shine your light and he’s at the door, you’ll meet your end. I can recommend never to rush when checking, as being impatient more often than not leads to death. Should be noted he has two jumpscares, one at the door, and one if he gets into the bedroom.
Nightmare Chica
I could honestly just take Nightmare Bonnie’s entry, replace Bonnie with Chica, and left hall with right hall. The only real note that makes her different from Bonnie is sometimes you’ll hear banging of pots and pans, much like when Chica would go through the Kitchen in FNaF1. Everything I said regarding the doors and the breathing should be applied when checking the right door as well, be patient, and don’t be hasty, closing the door when nothing’s there will only lead to your death. One more thing to note is that Chica will only jumpscare you at the door, the Cupcake will come into the room to jumpscare you if the right door is not checked and Chica is there, something I’d only expect from a fangame, well played Scott.
Nightmare Foxy
Foxy will not be active until Night 3, though there is a chance he will be active late into Night 2. I personally have never seen him in Night 2, but there is still the chance, so keep an eye on the closet.
Foxy doesn’t actually start in the closet, rather, like Bonnie and Chica, he will appear at the end of the hall, meaning you can ward him off with your flashlight, but this will only work for so long. When you hear and/or see the closet door shut, that means that Foxy is now in the closet, check him immediately, as he will attack soon after if not given proper attention. Foxy has several phases while in the closet, much like he did in Pirate’s Cove in the first game, these phases are as follows.
- Head sticking out of the closet, preparing to attack, he may stick out and attempt to bite causing a shortened jumpscare sound.
- Bending down, head not yet visible, almost in attack position.
- Standing upright, you should be able to see his hook hanging down. His ‘idle’ phase as it were.
- A foxy plushie, adorable.
The only way to delay Foxy is to approach the closet door and hold it closed, much like the other doors. He will slowly regress back until he is in his plushie state. It’s up to the player to stay as long as they think they can get away with, sometimes it’s better to linger and get him into an early phase, other times it’s better to stay for a few seconds just to keep his attack slightly delayed. It’s all situational and up to you. Keep your wits about you, and keep a routine check on the closet.
Nightmare Fredbear
Only appearing Night 5 and on, Nightmare Fredbear really takes the gameplay to a new level. Nightmare Fredbear is also the only animatronic who is present Night 5, and will become active staring 4am Night 6. I’ll put in the info I gave in my Night 5 guide. This strategy becomes applicable 4am and on Night 6.
At the start of the night, stop and listen, as you’ll hear Fredbear move to either the right or left door, be careful as he may change sides irraticly, and this will get worse as the night goes on. Another thing I must note is if you heard Fredbear move to the left or right hall, and he isn’t there, you may have to shine your light a few times to make him appear, but if he isn’t there, he just isn’t there. When Fredbear in the hall, close the door, and wait for the sound of him moving, he should move to the opposite side, but he may double back to the same side, so stay alert. One thing to note is if you shine your light more than once when he’s in the hall, he will appear right next to the door, close the door immediately if this happens, as he will quickly get in if you don’t act fast enough.
Sometime through the night you’ll start to hear Fredbear emit deep laughs, most likely you will be unable to find him in the halls, and this means he is currently in the room. Don’t fret, check the bed and the closet for his disembodied head, but keep an ear out for any movement outside in the halls, as his laugh doesn’t always mean he’s in the room. If you see his head on the bed, keep your flashlight shone on it for several seconds until it flickers, you should then hear movement outside in the halls again, continue to ward him off using your doors. If Fredbear happens to be in the closet, close the door much like you would for Foxy, until you hear movement in the hall again, then begin using the doors to defend yourself. If he is in the closet, do not keep your flashlight on him, this will just result in death.
As the night gets closer to ending, the frequence Fredbear appears in the room will start to increase, as will the likelyhood that he will change sides while in the hall, so don’t be fooled and keep a close ear out for the movement sounds. I would like to state once again, that sound is key to surviving this night, wear headphones for the best results, also prepare your ears for the inevitable jumpscare noise you’ll hear while trying to beat this night. Best of luck, and don’t despair, there’s still far harder nights after this.
Plushtrap
Now Plushtrap isn’t really a threat, actually he’s more helpful than harmful, if you’re brave enough. Rather than being another threat to you during the night, between all nights before Night 5, you will play a minigame called “Fun With Plushtrap”. If you can stop Plushtrap on the X, you will be able to skip 2 hours on the next night, but this is a one time only bonus, so don’t waste it. A timer will be in the upper right corner, decreasing each time. Plushtrap will begin sittting in a chair at the opposite end of the hall, and will only move if the flashlight is off. Plushtrap slowly creeps closer to you, if you shine if while he is between the doors he will quickly slink into the doorway out of sight, if he is stopped between any of the doors he will fall motionless to the ground. The only way to stop him on the X is to be cautious, but don’t be over cautious, otherwise you’ll spend the whole minigame watching Plushtrap in the chair. It’s kind of a risk vs. reward game, but you have to take chances sometimes, just don’t be overconfident, otherwise you’ll waste the oppurtunity and lose on the 2 hour skip. Other than that Plushtrap has no bearing on the actual gameplay during the nights.
Nightmare
What I could only describe as the “Golden Freddy” of FNaF4, Nightmare only appears on Nightmare mode and on, at 4am. Nightmare is essentially an amped up difficulty version of Fredbear, with the exception of always appearing next to the door when he is present in the hallways. All of the tactics used against Fredbear should be used against Nightmare. Other than that all I can say is, good luck, you’re gonna need it.
Closing
I can say without a doubt, that this is the scariest and hardest Five Nights at Freddy’s. I hope that my guide provided you with a little bit of advice on how to survive, and be sure to let me know if there’s anything inaccurate or missing, as the game recently came out and there may be errors. Other than that, I hope everyone’s looking forward to the DLC later this year, I know I am.
