Overview
This is a basic guide to the classes in Team Fortress Classic. It talks about the nine classes and their weapons, abilities, grenades, etc. This would probably be most useful for a TF2 player wanting to try TFC, so they could see the differences and similarities of the classes. I haven’t included the Civillian because I never see any servers running the hunted/VIP gamemode, which has the Civillian class.I wrote this mostly out of bordem a few weeks ago.
Scout
Scout is fast. Pretty much only useful for offense/capping objectives, as his weapons are pretty pathetic. He has a shotgun, nailgun, and crowbar. Use your concussion grenades to fly the flag across the map! Scout is the only class that doesn’t have Hand Grenades. Instead, he has caltrops, which, when stepped on by an enemy, hurts them and slows them down.
Sniper
Sniper is obvious. Hold down your LMB to charge your sniper rifle shot, and then release to shoot that enemy HW Guy into a shower of giblets (literally!) Shooting at an enemy’s feet with the sniper rifle will slow down their move speed, at the expense of half of its damage. If healed by a Medic, the feet can be healed back to normal. Use your machine gun and nailgun to defend yourself. The machine gun shares the same ammo reserve as the sniper rifle, so be careful or you may run out of ammo! I have never found myself having to use the crowbar on any class that equips it. Every class has a crowbar except Combat Medic, Spy, and Engineer.
Soldier
Soldier has a rocket launcher and two shotguns. You can rocket jump using your rocket launcher to get your flag to the cap, get to the front lines quickly, or to just get to high places. Use your shotguns to finish off enemies! Soldier’s Nail Grenades can shoot nails everywhere! He is one of the most basic classes, and should be easy to get kills with.
Demolitions Man (Demoman/Demo)
If you notice a crap-ton of explosions on the battlefield, there’s probably a Demolitions Man somewhere! Greg, (that’s literally his name) loves explosions! The Grenade Launcher pipebombs will explode by themselves a few seconds after you shoot them (blue), and the Pipebomb Launcher pipebombs can be detonated by you with a right-click (green). Use your Pipebomb Launcher to set traps, or to stop enemies from taking the flag (you can also detonate them in the air for point-blank combat, called winbombing.) You also have a little shotty for extra backup. Another unique feature of the demoman is the detpack. Hold M to plant it, and press SHIFT to change when it detonates. This will insta-kill anyone near it (including you, better run!) On some maps, you can use the det-pack to reveal secret parts of the map! Demoman has MIRV Grenades, which explode, and then drop little “baby” grenades after, which will then explode as well!
Combat Medic
Medic is an awesome class. Yes, he can heal and stuff. But he is also suprisingly great at capping objectives. He is the second-fastest class next to Scout, and like Scout, Medic also has concussion grenades to fly across the map with! You can heal wounded teammates with your Medkit, and also INFECT enemies! Once an enemy is infected, they will continue to recieve damage until they die, unless healed by a Medic on their team. Medics also have two shotguns and a nailgun to defend themselves with. If a teammate is at 100% HP, you can still give them a “buff” with your medkit and get them to 155% HP! You also passively heal yourself over time.
Heavy Weapons Guy (HW Guy)
This is the strongest class in TFC. He has the most HP and Armor, and he doesn’t even get knockback from explosives! Use your Assault Cannon (Minigun) to mow down large groups of enemies. He also has two shotguns and a crowbar, but you should only need those when your Assault Cannon is out of ammo. You can also take lots of damage/fire for your team. HW Guy is probably the easiest class in Team Fortress Classic to play. Like Demolitions Man, HW Guy also has a MIRV Grenade.
Warning: He is incredibly slow.
Pyromaniac (Pyro)
Pyro is pretty much useless to your team in Team Fortress Classic. All he can really do is distract and annoy the enemy team. If you are on fire from a Pyro, your screen can get covered in flames, making it hard to see, which is annoying. Pyro comes with a flamethrower, an Incendiary Cannon, a shotgun, and a crowbar. The Incendiary Cannon can be used to perform a mini-rocket jump (I’ve never found a situation to use it in, as you barely get any height), ignite enemies at long ranges, and do extra damage to already-ignited enemies! Pyros are fire-proof, so you should use your shotgun or your Hand Grenades to kill enemy pyros. Pyro also has Napalm Grenades, which will explode and then create a pool of fire in the blast radius. I have found these useful by creating a boundary/wall of flames for the enemy team so your team can escort the flag.
Spy
This is probably the most difficult class to play in TFC. You can disguise as any class on any team, feign your own death, and uncover an enemy spy’s disguise by touching them. It takes about ten seconds to disguise, so you should take cover while disguising if you’re at the front lines. While disguised as an enemy, sentries will not fire at you, and you will appear as an a friendly teammate to the enemy team. Spy is great at taking down sentries. Disguise, approach the sentry (better to use less-popular routes) and toss a Hand Grenade its way! Spy comes with a Knife, Tranquilizer Gun, Shotgun, and a Nailgun. Stabbing someone with the Knife from behind results in an instant-kill (though, it can sometimes be glitchy, sometimes I’ll be cutting someone from behind with the knife, but it only registers as a little shank, so you need to be pretty accurate.) Your tranquilizer gun does pathetic damage, but it will reduce the enemy you hit it with’s movement and turning speed by half. This is a great weapon to use when you’re being chased, and to help your team out. The Super-Shotgun is great for defending yourself and dishing out good damage. I have never found myself using the nailgun for Spy; it could be used for destroying sentries at long range, though. Spy has regular Hand Grenades and Hallucination Grenades. Hallucination Grenades will cause enemies in its radius to take small damage, and begin to hallucinate objects appearing around them. Spy can take time , such as grenades. It may take a while to get good at Spy, but it sure is fun to play.
TIP: If you think someone is a spy, “spy-check” them by shooting at them. If they’re an enemy spy, you will see blood come out when you shoot them.
Engineer (Engi)
Engineers can build Sentries for defense (Upgradable, Levels 1-3, the higher the level the more damage it can do), dispensers (can create ammunition and armor,) and teleporters to teleport teammates to the front lines faster (or even behind it, if you’re “sneaky.”) The player can detonate buildings to kill or damage any enemy near it. The more resouces the dispenser has, the more damage the explosion will do. Hit your buildings with your wrench to upgrade them, heal them, or put in more ammunition. To do those things to your buildings, you will need metal. Collect metal by touching backpacks scattered around the map or the ones players drop when they die. Teammates can also press X to drop extra ammo, which, as an Engineer, you can collect as metal. Also, a little-known fact about the Engineer is that he can repair/increase teammate’s armor by hitting them with his wrench. This will sacrifice his cells, however. Engineer comes with his Wrench, Railgun, and a Shotgun. Railgun is great for long-range, and the shotgun is great for defending yourself. He has regular Hand Grenades, and EMP Grenades. I love the concept of EMP Grenades. The more ammunition an enemy player in its blast radius has, the more damage it does. So, it’s more likely to kill a giant HW Guy than a little Scout (funny, huh?) These are probably the most powerful grenades in TFC, especially against big groups of people, because the damage will STACK.
