Getting Started

If you’re having trouble getting through the Despair Dungeon, this guide should be able to help you. There’s a couple of important things to note before you start your journey into the Despair Dungeon. First things first:

Despair Dungeon requires concrete solutions, but it can take a few different forms. For these exact solutions read on below.

Read the underlined passages if TL:DR

Stats
  • Influence: Maximum hit points.
  • Focus: Maximum skill points.
  • Strength: Increase in normal attack power & physical skill power. Such as the skill “Sword Stab”
  • Defense: Increase in normal attack & physical skill damage reduction
  • Intellect: Increase in intelligence skill power. Such as the skill “Electric Paralyze”
  • Fortitude: Increase in intelligence skill damage reduction & negative status resist.
  • Agility: Determines turn order as well as dodge chance.
  • Luck: Determines run away chance as well as crit chance.

Note: Party member with highest luck determines run away chance.
Note: Stats can increase above 999. The cap is only visual.

Tips
  • You can press X or ESC to sprint in the dungeon.
  • You should raise 4 individual party members through the Talent Development Plan. Having a full party is important to being successful in the dungeon.
  • These 4 members should be diverse in some ways. I recommend getting at least one of each character type. 1 sport type, 1 intelligence type, and 1 variety type character. The 4th member’s type is up to you.
  • Characters you develop cannot be leveled up more after graduating the Talent Development Plan. Use your 3 years wisely to make the most of your future dungeon crawling ultimates. You can however change their development, by putting that same character’s death card through the development plan again. You will simply overwrite the previous result.
  • I won’t go into too much leveling detail in this guide, but having a character who can use Sports Physical skills and a character who can use Intelligence Magical skills effectively is important. Enemies can be resistant to certain types of damage.
  • Variety characters are important, because they generally have higher defense stats. This makes them generally worse at combat, but good at surviving and being able to cast variety type skills safely. Variety type skills include a Heal, Status Cure, and Resurrect.
  • Any character can have any skills, but it’s important to assign general roles based on stats. Sport types accel at strength, Intelligence types accel at intellect, Variety types accel in defense and fortitude. Each one of these attributes has an item to increase it, so you can assign roles based on them.
  • Following that any character can have any skills, you may want to establish the Fighting Spirit skill on 2 characters, in case one of the characters with that skill is knocked out. In addition, you should consider giving Absorb Focus to any character, as it is the only way to restore focus besides leaving the dungeon.
  • Try to give characters decent skill variety instead of high level skills, unless you want them to be a one trick kind of character. Low level skills can be useful, such as fighting spirit. S & U tier characters have an easier time getting higher level skills while maintaining diversity, and level 10 skills usually have an extra effect (Such as fighting spirit affecting the whole party). So use your best judgement.
  • It is recommended you swap out any normal tier characters for S tier characters you may get from the Death Cards machine as they come. S tier and U tier characters have better progression while leveling.
  • There is a boss every 10 levels, and an elevator every 5 levels. Make sure to use the elevators to restore your character’s Influence and Focus, and save your progress. You can travel to the floors with elevators at any time from the base as long as you have activated them.
  • Your chances at higher tier characters increase when you reach the floor after a boss, so say you beat the boss on floor 10, you should go to floor 11 before using the death cards machine for a better chance at S tier characters.
  • Any chests opened and bosses defeated will be saved, even if your party is wiped out in the Despair Dungeon.

Death Card Tier Progression

The multiplier applied to gained talent points and levels.

  • Normal Tier: 1x Multiplier (AVG Lvl: 15)
  • S Tier: 2x Multiplier (AVG Lvl: 45)
  • U tier: 5x Multiplier (AVG Lvl: 99)

Achievements

The First of Many

Defeat the boss on floor 10 of the Despair Dungeon.

Reaching the Summit

Defeat the boss on floor 50 of the Despair Dungeon.

Overcoming True Fear

Defeat the hidden boss on floor 100 of the Despair Dungeon.

It should be noted that clearing floors 51-100 will most likely require you to have U tier characters, or have farmed gear, as the difficulty becomes much harder. Some situtations may require you to specifically develop characters for the completion of tasks, such as a skill needed to protect yourself from a boss attack.

Hidden Boss

Upon reaching the 100th floor and slaying the boss, the game credits will roll as they did after the 50th’s floors boss. However you will get a message asking you afterwards “Clear save data?” in addition to a message that a hidden boss has appeared on the 100th floor. Say “Yes” to the prompt to clear your save data after defeating the floor 100 boss and you will be able to progress through floor 100 normally from there upon continuing your game. An elevator will be in the back of the floor, as well as the true final boss of the Despair Dungeon.

The hidden boss isn’t difficult, but requires specific preparation. A further look into this boss and the rest can be found later in the guide.

Monokuma V3 will always crit on normal attacks. The boss will also usually do enough damage to instantly kill most party members with any attack, including his area of effect attacks. Wind Jet All can be negated with the Wind Barrier skill. Summer Rain Fist can be dodged with a high enough agility score. Confuse can be resisted by party members with a high fortitude level. A variety character with a staff and recover influence / cure condition skills will be necessary here. Despair can also be resisted by high fortitude, but does not have as much a serious effect as confuse. If a party member gets confused, they lose their turns and attack allies indefinitely until cured, and you can only control characters who are not affected by confuse. Despair makes your party members unable to recover HP.

Rare Enemies

Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum Monokumamels do not show where they appear. It’s believed the appropriate floors for those are listed below. The floors where they appear the most, are the floors right before switching to the next rarity.

These rare Monokumamels will usually run away if not killed fast, so they must be focused down in an encounter if you want to get their materials and gold. Multi-hitting attacks work wonders for them, such as Falcon Kick.
