Apex Legends is a free-to-play first-person shooter battle royale video game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. On February 3, 2019, the game was announced and unveiled, and released for free on the following day.

๐ฌ Story and Setting
Apex Legends takes place in a region of the Frontier on the fringes known as the Outlands. The Frontier War is over, with the IMC’s presumed defeat; the end of the war’s exact timing is uncertain. With neither the IMC nor the Militia to exert order upon the war-ravaged Frontier, the intervening time allowed the birth of a new competitive bloodsport known as the Apex Games. The Apex Games are presumed to be founded and organized by Kuben Blisk, founder of the original Apex Predators mercenary unit and veteran of the Frontier War. The island of King’s Canyon was a region formerly rich in resources. Still, it is now a dedicated bloodsport island home to the finest hunters and gladiators on the Frontier, the primary site of the Apex Games.
๐ช Gameplay
Apex Legends is a first-person shooter, as the previous mainline games in the Titanfall series. Apex Legends is an ongoing live service game with no single-player campaign or traditional multiplayer matchmaking, unlike the previous games. The game is a “hero shooter,” where players play as discrete, individualized characters with their own designs, personalities, stories, and special abilities. The game’s primary format is a “battle royale,” where players airdrop onto a remote island with no supplies on their person; they must scavenge equipment from the environment and fight against others in an ever-shrinking free-for-all battlefield, with the winner being the last man standing.
Players play as “Legends” hero characters similar to the Pilot or Titan classes found in Titanfall 2. Standard matches in Apex Legends are played in squads of three, fighting against nineteen other squads for a total of twenty squads – 60 players – in any given match. The winners – the game’s Apex Champions – are the last squad standing after all other squads are eliminated.

Before a game begins, the three squad members are placed in random order and given a few seconds apiece to pick their Legend for the game; Legend choice within the squad is first-come-first-serve duplicate Legends are not allowed (two teammates cannot pick the same character). The last player to pick their Legend is the designated “Jumpmaster,” who ultimately decides where and when the fireteam drops onto the map as a single unit. However, they can pass the role onto another player during the drop phase.

โ โ ๐น Bloodhound
Bloodhound is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. A legendary game hunter shrouded in mystery. They compete in the Apex Games with the moniker “Technological Tracker.”
Bloodhound is known across the Outlands as one of the greatest game hunters the Frontier has ever seen โ and thatโs about all anyone knows.
Their identity is a mystery wrapped in layers of rumors: they are fabulously wealthy, a bloodthirsty murderer, a Goliath whisperer, a former slave, half-bat, and a dozen other things depending on whoโs doing the whispering.
All anyone truly knows is that Bloodhound is a force to be reckoned with in the Apex Games. Bloodhoundโs unparalleled tracking skills are a boon to any team they join, helping them root out hidden opponents and tracking the enemyโs movements.
Calling on Earthโs Old Norse Gods to guide them, Bloodhound believes that destiny is a path that has already been laid out, eventually carrying all to their death.
But with that knowledge comes strength, because until that day comes, Bloodhound knows they canโt be stopped.

Makoa Gibraltar, also known simply by his surname Gibraltar, is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. A Pacific Islander search-and-rescue specialist competing in the Apex Games, his moniker is “Shielded Fortress.”
Gibraltar is a gentle giant with a wild side.
The son of two SARAS (Search and Rescue Association of Solace) volunteers have always been skilled at getting others out of dangerous situations common in the Outlands.
However, he only began to understand the value of protecting others when he and his boyfriend stole his fatherโs motorcycle, took it on a joyride, and got trapped by a deadly mudslide.
His parents saved them, and his father lost an arm in the process.
Gibraltar has never forgotten that sacrifice and has devoted his life to helping those in need.
The Apex Games didnโt change that, but they changed what it meant.
Many of Gibraltarโs friends and colleagues have competed in the Games for extra money, fame, and glory over the years, and some never came home.
Gibraltar joined to keep them safe, and, for the first time, his skills as a rescuer and his rebellious nature worked together.
Heโs now become an icon in the Apex Games, putting himself in the line of fire to protect his squad and send his opponents running for cover.

Ajay Che, also known by her alias Lifeline, is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. As a field paramedic and competitor in the Apex Games, her moniker is “Combat Medic.”
Ajay Che, aka Lifeline, isnโt someone you would expect to find in the Apex Games.
Once the child of wealthy war profiteers, she left home when she learned of the damage her family had caused and enlisted in the Frontier Corps, a humanitarian organization that aids Frontier communities in need.
Sheโs since devoted her life to helping others and joined the Apex Games to fund the Frontier Corps with her winnings.
Since no one in the Games is innocent โ they all know what they signed up for โ and every one of her victories means help for those in need, Lifeline has no problem engaging in the popular bloodsport.
Or so she tells herself.
She may seem sarcastic and callous, but deep down, she wants to help people and make the world a better place.
If that means taking a few people down in the process, so be it.

โ โ ๐ธ Pathfinder
Pathfinder is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. As a rogue, Mk. II Mobile Robotic Versatile Entity Automated Assistant competing in the Apex Games, his moniker is โForward Scout.โ
Pathfinder is the picture of optimism, despite his circumstances.
An MRVN (Mobile Robotic Versatile Entity) was modified to specialize in location scouting and surveying.
He booted up decades ago in an abandoned laboratory with no idea who created him or why.
With only his MRVN designation to hint at his identity, Pathfinder set off searching for his creator.
Pathfinder has learned much in his travels since then (like making a mean Eastern Leviathan Stew) but hasnโt come any closer to finding his creator.
Still, heโs never given up hope and has joined the Apex Games to gain a following and hopefully draw the attention of his maker.
In the meantime, he remains enthusiastic and helpful, always ready to make new friends (then shoot them).
- Pathfinder is openly described as “MRVN 2.0” and was easy to implement personality-wise. A developer joked that Pathfinder is described as “just a robot looking for the purpose…by participating in a bloodsport.” (“It seems that MRVNs do have a breaking point.”)
- The running gag from Titanfall 2 where the MRVN from Marvin’s Finest Hour never received a high-five carried over into Apex Legends (“We HAVE to make an MRVN, and he HAS to get a high-five.” “By force.” “By force!”), to the point where one of the very first animations ever made was Pathfinder defeating an enemy with his grapple leading into a forced high-five. In fact, it was that animation that is commonly cited as the genesis of executions/finishers in Apex.
โ โ ๐น Wraith
Renee Blasey, also known by her alias “Wraith,” is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. As a mysterious escaped human experiment touched by the void and a competitor in the Apex Games, her moniker is “Interdimensional Skirmisher.”
Wraith is a whirlwind fighter, able to execute swift and deadly attacks and manipulate spacetime by opening rifts in the fabric of reality โ but she has no idea how she got that way.
Years ago, she woke up in an IMC Detention Facility for the Mentally ill with no memory of her life before. She also began hearing a distant voice whispering in her mind that would keep her awake for days on end.
Despite nearly driving her insane, once she started to listen and trust it, the voice helped her harness her newfound power of void manipulation and escape the facility.
Determined to uncover her true identity, Wraith began a quest to find out more about the experiments.
Many of the old research facilities, however, are buried beneath heavily guarded arenas used for the Apex Games.
Now Wraith has joined the competition, and with every match, she gets closer to the truth.
- Wraith appears to have a Gen 10 Emblem on her outfit, which in Titanfall is earned by reaching Generation 10 in multiplayer. In the Singh Labs located in Kings Canyon, a room has a laptop you can interact with. It has a voice clip with Wraith stating that she is a Senior Science Pilot.
- Wraith was the hardest (launch) character to design, going through at least three total redesigns and more iterations than any other character.
- The “void” that Wraith steps through are described as a veil or “window” between infinite dimensions, and it allows her to glimpse into those infinite other dimensions as she passes into and through it. While phase-shifted, Wraith can see “ghost images” of herself blink into view; these are described as infinite other Wraiths from other dimensions passing through the void at the same time as her. The “Voices From the Void” passive was also explained to be these other Wraiths looking into her dimension and speaking to her, warning her of danger. A developer claimed inspiration from Donnie Darko to explain Wraith’s otherworldly powers in a science-fiction setting like Titanfall’s.
- Voidwalker Wraith can be seen during the first minute looking up information in the IMC database to locate Amer Singh, the lead scientist on Project Wraith.
- When Voidwalker Wraith gets access to IMC’s database, we can see Crypto’s symbol appear with the text “Access Granted” appearing directly afterward.
- Apex Wraith’s age is revealed to be 27 during the database access via Voidwalker Wraith, yet canonically her age is 32, as seen in the EA Apex Legends forum for Apex Wraith.
- Singh is deceased in Apex’s main dimension, yet he’s alive in Wraith’s home dimension and is the reason Voidwalker Wraith stayed in Apex Wraith’s home dimension.

Anita Williams, also known by her alias “Bangalore,” is one of the playable Legends in Apex Legends. She is an ex-soldier for the IMC Armed Forces and a competitor within the Apex Games under the moniker “Professional Soldier.”
Born into a military family where she, her parents, and her four older brothers all served in the IMC Armed Forces, Bangalore has been an exceptional soldier since she was young.
She was top of her class at the IMC Military Academy and the only cadet who could take apart a Peacekeeper, equip it with a Precision Choke hop-up. She put it back together in under twenty seconds โ blindfolded.
Three years ago, Anita and her brother Jackson were ordered to retrieve a mercenary fleet from the Outlands to aid in the IMCโs fight against the Militia.
However, their unit lost contact with IMC HQ and was ambushed on arrival.
The squad scattered, but Jackson stayed behind to give his sister time to escape.
Alone and with no way home, Anita put her training, extensive weapon knowledge, and competitive spirit to work by joining the Apex Games.
Now, she fights to raise money for passage back to the IMC home base, where she hopes to reunite with what remains of her family.

- Bangalore is described as “ex-IMC,” even though her profile doesn’t directly mention severing ties with the conglomerate. That aside, developers noted she was expressly written to have come from a strong and proud military background and is described as “a good guy.”
- She is expressly described and designed as the basic “soldier character” that is easy to grasp and digest.
- She is named for the “Bangalore torpedo,” a piped explosive charge used in wartime to clear defensive structures and obstacles.
- Her mechanical kit is inspired by the Punjab soldiers serving in the British Indian Army during World War I, who would use smoke and creeping barrages of artillery fire to charge across the open field.
- She was partly inspired by and ended up serving as an homage to predominantly African-American regiments, like the Harlem Hellfighters.
- “Oscar Mike” is a term Bangalore uses a lot. This is a military term which means “On the Move.”
โ โ ๐น Caustic
Alexander Nox, also referred to by his alias Caustic, is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. As a murderous scientist and competitor in the Apex Games, his moniker is “Toxic Trapper.”
Before there was Caustic, a scientist named Alexander Nox worked at Humbert Labs, the Frontierโs leading manufacturer of pesticide gases
Humbert Labs was constantly on the hunt for better and stronger formulas with a glut of pesticides needed to protect the growing Frontier coloniesโ crops.
Nox was one of their brightest scientists and worked day and night, developing new gases. But to make sure they worked, he needed to test them on more than just inert tissue: he needed something living.
As he toiled in secret, Nox began to see the beauty in his creations and their ability to destroy anything they touched.
But the head of Humbert Labs soon discovered his gruesome experiments, and their confrontation ended with the lab in flames, and it is chief dead.
Today, Nox is missing and presumed deceased. Caustic, meanwhile, now find new test subjects in the Apex Games, where he puts his gaseous creations to work and observes their effects with great interest.

Humbert Labs (formerly)
- Caustic was originally written to be a good guy. After realizing that didn’t make sense with his kit, he was rewritten to be a pragmatic sociopath who places science above human life, inspired by the individual who invented weaponized mustard gas in World War I. He’s one of the reasons why player characters are explicitly referred to as “Legends” and not “heroes.”
- His original mechanical fantasy is “the monster in the fog.” Hearing his ventilator through the gas was similar to a hatchet dragging on the ground in a horror movie.
- One of the most difficult parts of putting together his visual design was his head. At one point, he wore a gas mask similar to the Pyro from Team Fortress 2. At another point, he wore what was referred to as the “bee man” outfit since he looked like a beekeeper; the design was scrapped because there was no visible head articulation under the mask, so one wouldn’t be able to tell if he was looking at them.
- One of the biggest internal debates was how his gas would affect teammates. The design choice was made that all Caustics would be immune to all Caustic gas, and everyone else would be affected, even though friendly gas wouldn’t damage teammates. The developers don’t like the idea of “secret knowledge,” and it was a choice towards simplicity in a game where not all abilities are team-color-coded.
โ โ ๐ธ Mirage
Eliott Witt, also known by his alias Mirage, is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. As a competitor in the Apex Games, his moniker is “Holographic Trickster.”
Mirage is the kind of guy who likes to stand out. The youngest of four brothers, he perfected the art of fooling around to get attention.
He took seriously the one thing he took seriously: Holo-Pilot technology: introduced to the illusion-creating tech by his engineer mother, he poured over the mechanisms and learned all he could think about them. Even when his brothers went MIA during the Frontier War, Mirage and his mother continued to develop holo devices, and the work brought them closer.
While working as a bartender to make ends meet, Mirage heard amazing stories from his patrons about the Apex Games and the wealth and glory that came with victory.
As good as both of those sounded, he knew he couldnโt risk leaving his mother childless โ until she gave him a set of customized holo devices and told him to follow his dream.
Mirage is now the life of the Apex Games, outwitting opponents and charming audiences across the Outlands.
- Much of Mirage’s personality and presentation is inspired by Respawn developer Mohammad Alavi, to the point where a motion capture actor described his thought process as thinking of Alavi and then exaggerating.
- He’s described as “a bit vain” with how he jokes around with holos of himself. Many of his tricks and gambits are described as “vaudevillian.”
- Unlike most other characters, he openly acknowledges he’s talking to himself when describing the game state as a solo character.
- He embodies the idea of describing a character in 1-3 words, given how apt “Holographic Trickster” is as his moniker.
โ โ ๐น Octane
Octavio Silva, also known by his alias Octane, is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. As a renowned daredevil and competitor in the Apex Games, his moniker is “High-Speed Daredevil.”
One day, Octavio Silva was bored. In fact, he was bored most days.
Heir to the preoccupied CEOs of Silva Pharmaceuticals and wanting for nothing in life, he entertained himself by performing death-defying stunts and posting holovids of them for his fans to gawk over.
So, this day, he decided to set the course record for a nearby Gauntlet by launching himself across the finish line โ using a grenade.
As he lay in triage hours later, the doctors informed him that the damage done to his legs meant his daredevil days were over.
That didnโt sit well with Octavio, who turned to an old friend for help: Ajay Che, whom he guilted into forging an order to replace his legs with bionic ones.
Suddenly able to repair his limbs at a momentโs notice, Octavio decided petty online stunts werenโt enough: the ultimate adrenaline rush, the Apex Games, was calling.
Now, heโs going to become an Apex Champion making the most incredible, death-defying moves anyoneโs ever seen. Maybe in the arena, he wonโt be so bored.

- References to the Gauntlet and Octane’s performance therein are a reference to The Pilot’s Gauntlet – the tutorial level in Titanfall 2 – and the players who speedrun the final challenge to complete the Gauntlet as fast as possible. The Gauntlet’s fastest known runs are completed using a technique called “Frag Boosting” – using the blast of a Frag Grenade explosion for a major speed boost. It’s unknown if Octane competed in an actual Pilot’s Gauntlet. A previous verified world record for completing the Gauntlet with frag boosting, accomplished on March 3, 2019 (two weeks before Octane’s reveal) by Rbrite, a.k.a. Cash Mayo, stood at 12 seconds flat. The current record, still held by Cash Mayo, stands at 11.700 seconds.
โ โ ๐ธ Wattson
Natalie Paquette, also known by her alias “Wattson,” is a playable Legend in Apex Legends and was introduced at E3 2019.
Wattson is a familiar face in the Apex Games, though for a different reason than most. Daughtering the Gamesโ lead electrical engineer, she studied his manuals to stay close to him and discovered her calling at a young age.
Though she could be completely distracted one moment and hyper-focused the next, electricity grounded her โ its ordered, predictable flow made sense in a way the rest of the world didnโt.
She devoured every book she could on the subject and eventually became such a skilled engineer that she was commissioned to build the Apex Gamesโ Modified Containment Ring. Unfortunately, her father died the day it was revealed, leaving her alone.
At her lowest moment, a group of competitors invited her to return to the arena with them, assuring her she would always have a home.
She now fights alongside her friends in the arena she helped build, destroying incoming missiles, recharging shields, creating fences, and using her pylon to silence fights that get too loud.
Nobody knows the arena better than Wattson โ anyone who underestimates her is in for a shock.

โ โ ๐น Crypto
Tae Joon Park, also known as Crypto, is a playable Legend in Apex Legends. Framed for corporate espionage and murder, he was forced to abandon his life and identity, becoming Crypto. He competes in the Apex Games under the moniker “Surveillance Expert.”
Crypto specializes in secrets. He uses aerial drones to spy on his opponents in the Apex Arena without being seen as a brilliant hacker and encryption expert.
He also has a secret of his own: his name is Tae Joon Park, and he joined the Apex Games to find the people who framed him for murder.
An orphan abandoned at a young age, Tae Joon escaped a life of squalor by becoming a computer engineer for the Mercenary Syndicate, along with his foster sister, Mila Alexander.
One day, Tae Joon and Mila stumbled upon an algorithm that could predict the result of any Apex Games match, hidden away in the Gamesโ own computer systems.
That caught the attention of the wrong people – the next day, Mila disappeared, and Tae Joon was forced into hiding after he was framed for her murder.
Heโs now joined the Games to clear his name – because sometimes the spotlight is the best place to hide.

- Crypto was leaked in a GameStop buyers conference, alongside the Charge Rifle. Before this, fans had already found references to Crypto by datamining the game’s files.[1][2]
- Crypto’s drone is named “Hack.”
- Crypto’s Legendary cosmetic skin “Hype Beast” has been confirmed by writer Tom Casiello to be “his innermost desires come to life. He wants to scream his identity to all within earshot. Because that would mean this nightmare is over.”
- Crypto is responsible for destroying the Repulsor tower in King’s Canyon, a device that emits high frequencies used by the IMC to keep potentially dangerous wildlife away. Local leviathans and flyers from the island’s outskirts moved in upon its destruction, causing a great deal of damage to many of the Island’s well-known structures used for the Apex Games.
- Crypto’s voice actor, Johnny Young, is an active streamer on Twitch, where he is known to do custom voice lines after the character he plays.
- Crypto owns a data knife.
- Crypto’s “Rising Pheonix” Legendary cosmetic is a tactical interpretation of an outfit used in the Korean (both North and South) Lion Dance, meant to rid a location of evil spirits.
- Although Crypto frequently refers to Mirage as “Old Man,” Crypto is actually older than Mirage.
โ โ ๐ธ Revenant
Revenant is a simulacrum character featured as a playable Legend in Apex Legends.
Revenant used to be human. He used to be the greatest hitman the Mercenary Syndicate ever had.
He used to look in the mirror and see his human face looking back. However, time changes everything. When his programming finally failed, he saw what he had become at the hands of the Mercenary Syndicate and Hammond Robotics: a walking nightmare of steel and vestigial flesh. His masters resurrected him as a simulacrum, snatching him from deathโs embrace again and again and programming him to forget.
He swore he would hunt down every last person who did this to him, but more than two centuries have passed, and they’re all goneโฆ or so he thought. The return of Hammond Robotics to the Outlands has renewed his thirst for vengeance, and he wonโt stop until everyone connected to Hammond Robotics is dead. Of course, he doesnโt mind eviscerating a few of the Legends along the way. He used to need a reason to killโฆ but heโs not that man anymore.
Not much is known about Revenant’s childhood except that he hails from Solace.
Sometime later in his career, he found work as a hitman for the Mercenary Syndicate. He had a natural talent in this unsavory line of work. Soon, he became the best the syndicate had to offer when it came to assassinating someone in the Outlands.
In 2420, his consciousness was digitized and transferred to a simulacrum chassis soon after the project was realized. It is unclear under what circumstances he was enrolled in the project. His memory was blocked, and additional protocols were implemented to keep his simulacrum intelligence, unaware of his new identity.
The Syndicate took full advantage of his recent situation and used his skills as a hitman to further their objectives for years to come.
Hammond Robotics repaired and supplied him with a new chassis every time he received critical damage during a mission, followed by a memory wipe.
In 2708, Revenant completed a contract on Marcos Andrade. During the mission, he received some damage to his chassis that, combined with nearly three centuries of data loss and corruption from countless transferences, caused his programming to fail.
His programming was made to resemble his human emotions and reasoning to ensure his skills remain unaffected. The sudden exposure to all his blocked memories of all his injuries and deaths caused him severe distress.
When he recovered, freed of his digital constraints, he sought revenge on the Syndicate and Hammond Robotics for the suffering they had caused him with his forced servitude. In the following years, he mercilessly hunted down and killed anyone who worked for Hammond Robotics, using the ongoing war as a smokescreen.
Meanwhile, learning about his programming and what was done to him in all these years.
In 2733, 5-time Hyper Fighting Federation Champion James McCormick, sponsored by Hammond Robotics has named the newest entry for the 4th season of Apex Games. A week before starting the new season, McCormick had a live interview regarding his participation in OTV. During the telecast, Revenant snuck into the studio and murdered McCormick before the broadcast was quickly cut. Later in the afternoon, in an OTV press release, it was confirmed that McCormick was attacked by an unknown assailant and pronounced dead at the scene.
The next day, the Syndicate officially announced that the simulacrum Revenant would participate in the Apex Games, replacing the recently deceased James McCormick.

โ โ ๐น Loba
Loba Andrade is an infamous thief known for running high profile heists throughout the Outlands who recently joined the Apex Games.
When Loba was nine, she looked on as simulacrum hitman Revenant killed her family. Left with nothing, Loba survived by picking pockets.

Ramya Parekh, known commonly by her nickname Rampart, is a playable Legend introduced in the sixth season of the Apex Games.
Rampart is a blue-collar, private business owner who needs a big gun and a backpack full of scrap metal to get by in the dangerous, wild west world of the Outlands.
Before opening her popular modding shop on Gaea, Ramya Parekh (Rampart for short) made a name for herself in the underground gauntlet circuit.
Parekh climbed to the top, showcasing pure skill using her custom-modded gear.
She began taking jobs from smugglers, Syndicate members, and everyone in between. Some say it ainโt great unless itโs got โRampartโ written on it.
Parekh never shied away from letting people know how great she was, or better yet, how bad they were. Maybe thatโs what led a group of assailants to ambush her at her shop one night.
Her business burned down, and she was left with nothing — except an Apex Card.
For Parekh, the Apex card is more than just an invitation to compete – it’s a sign that she may have lost her shop, but she didn’t lose what built it. Like her motto says, she’s the kind of person who can always “turn crap into gold.โ

Mary moved her family to the scientific research station on Olympus and set to work.
With her apprentice’s help, Dr. Reid, Mary discovered Branthium – an element she was convinced could be the key to limitless energy.
But Branthium can be found only on the accretion disk of a black hole, so Mary and Dr. Reid departed on a dangerous mission to prove her theory right.
Mary promised her son Newton sheโd return safe and sound.
But Dr. Reid betrayed her, stealing the Branthium and sending her shuttle into the black holeโs orbit. Using her wits, Mary modified her robotic vacuum companion N.E.W.T. to escape. But time moves differently on the outskirts of a black hole, and she was 87 years too late.
Now Mary is determined to fund her research to find a way to go back in time and be with her son. She joins the Apex Games as Horizon, master of gravity, just in time for the next season to debut on Olympus – where her old life once was and where she had promised to return.

All competitors begin a match with no equipment on their person, special abilities aside.
They must scavenge the field for weapons and ammunition, gear, ordnance, and consumables.
Items are laid out randomly across the map, so no two-item spawns will ever be the same between matches; that said, certain regions of the map are designated by what certain rarities of equipment they are likely to contain.
Most items can be found lying out in the open, in supply bins, or the rare Loot Tick hidden around the map.
A couple of exceptional items, notably the gold-quality Kraber, Peacekeeper, and R-99 SMG, can only be initially found in a random supply drop.
Items can also be scavenged from a defeated competitor’s “death box,” the remains of their inventory from the moment they were eliminated; a death box will glow the color of the highest rarity item in that box. All death boxes disappear if there is nothing left in them and have no respawned banner.
โ โ โ๏ธ Weapons
There are currently 24 available weapons for the players to find and use, 19 at launch, with more planned to be added in the future. Most of the weapons make a reappearance from previous Titanfall games, while some of them are upgraded versions of older weapons or new ones in general. There are six available weapon types: assault rifles, submachine guns, light machine guns, sniper rifles, shotguns, and pistols. They are also generally organized by what ammo type they use (light ammo, heavy ammo, energy ammo, shotgun shells, or sniper rounds). Weapons can be cosmetically customized with their own skins a player chooses outside of the game; picking up another player’s weapon lets you see the customization they use on their weapon, if any.
Nearly all weapons can be modified on the fly with attachments, pieces of kit discovered in the field to improve a gun’s functionality. These mods include barrels to reduce muzzle rise and at level 4 flash, stocks to shorten the transition from one weapon to the next, larger magazines to increase ammo capacity, scopes to improve a gun’s iron sights capability, and Hop-Ups, which can change the handling of a weapon in some way. When swapping a weapon for another found in the field, the game will show which mods, if any, will carry over to the new weapon.

There are several types of ordnance available to the Legends competing in the Apex Games to use. They can be found inside Supply Bins, Loot Ticks, or scattered randomly throughout the map. By default, ordnance deals damage only to opponents and the attacker who threw it; because friendly fire is off, the attacker’s teammates cannot be harmed. The ultimate ability of Wattson can intercept all of the following.

It can be used strategically to fortify a building to deny entrance in all but one opening, effectively creating a chokepoint.
โ โ ๐ช Weapon attachments
Weapon attachments are parts of weapons in Apex Legends that can be attachable and detachable. These serve the purpose of making the weapon better for use. The six types of weapon attachments are bolts, barrel mods, optics, stocks, magazines, and hop-ups. The only types of weapons in the game which cannot equip these attachments are legendary weapons or golden weapons, which already equip these.
Barrel Stabilizers decrease muzzle drift. Level 4 barrel stabilizers also hide muzzle flash.
Like in Titanfall, Apex Legends allows you to equip extended magazines on most weapons. There are 4 types of magazines: Heavy, Light, Energy, and Sniper. Shotguns cannot equip magazines along with the L-STAR and Charge Rifle.
In Apex Legends, Shotgun Bolt increases the rate of fire for all shotguns in-game.
Optics are weapon attachments that can be installed or uninstalled on top of your weapon. These attachments give better sight of the enemy. All weapons, excluding golden weapons and legendary weapons (which come in with built-in optics), can have different optics equipped and removed depending on the range.

Stocks are attachments available to some weapons in Apex Legends. These attachments reduce the time it takes to switch between 2 weapons. This is especially helpful when you’re in a fight and run out of ammunition on one weapon. You can immediately switch to the other in less time. These also help reduce aim drift, meaning that (especially longer range) fights can be easier to win.
Hop-Up Attachments (shorthand: hop-ups) are specialized attachments available to certain weapons in Apex Legends.
These are muzzle, receiver, and rifling modifications of weapons that can be easily installed and removed on the fly without requiring any time to take apart the weapon.
Depending on the weapons and type of attachment used, these can greatly impact how the weapon operates.
Each weapon only has one specific Hop-Up that can be attached to the weapon.
There are currently 5 Hop-Ups in the game, and Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that they are satisfied with the number of Hop-Ups existing in the game and will rotate different Hop-Ups in and out of each season, meaning only 5 Hop-Ups presumably will exist at any given time.
Although some Hop-Ups like Skullpiercer Rifling and Hammerpoint Rounds are a total upgrade to the weapon, other Hop-Ups like Anvil Receiver and Double-Tap Trigger are side-grades.

Double-Tap Trigger
Enables option on a firearm to fire two ammunition pieces in a burst quickly. This Hop-Up was added in season 3. Unlike the Selectfire Receiver, Double Tap Trigger doesn’t change the handling and automatically transfer the weapon to the alternative firing mode.

Hammerpoint Rounds
Increases damage done to unshielded targets. This Hop-up was added in season 2. Along with the disruptor rounds and skull piercer rifling, this hop-up makes all ammunition leave a trace when fired, and the sound made when fired also changes.

Selectfire Receiver
It provides additional functionality that allows the toggle of an alternate firing mode when there was no one.

Skullpiercer Rifling
Increases the damage dealt when executing a headshot. This Hop-Up was removed in season 3 but reintroduced back into the game for season 5 to remove Anvil Receiver.

Turbocharger
Reduces the spin-up time required to charge up energy coils cartridges, removed in season 4 due to the re-categorization of the Devotion as a care package weapon, but reintroduced in season 6 with the Devotion being brought out of the care package.

Precision Choke
Narrows the spread of fired projectiles while aiming down sights (ADS). The weapon charges in three stages, narrowing the spread with each charge; the charge degrades while not using ADS. This effectively increases the range of the weapon. This Hop-Up was removed in season 6, and the Triple Take along with the PK now have toggle-able chokes.

Disruptor Rounds
Increased damage done to shielded targets. This Hop-Up was added in season 2 and removed in Season 3 because of the power the alternator had with disruptors. However, the disruptor mechanic was reintroduced in season 4, with the Sentinel SR being able to charge up with two shield cells and remove the shield of any opponent with one shot. This mechanic remains for a maximum time of 120 seconds. Each shot fired from a sentinel will shorten the time by 15 seconds.

Anvil Receiver
Increased damage done to targets with single fire mode, but used more ammunition and reduced rate of fire (used two ammunition at once rather than one). This Hop-Up was added in season 3, along with Double tap trigger, but vaulted in season 5 in exchange for the Skullpiercer Rifling Hop-up. The removal of this Hop-Up was never discussed, but some speculate it was due to the Hop-Up making sniper rifles obscure.
โ โ ๐ Gear
Gear are equipable items. They have their own slots in the inventory. There are four types of gear: Helmets, Armor, Knockdown Shields, and Backpacks.
Gear comes in different levels, each with a different rarity. Level 4 gear has the same stats as Level 3 gear, but they grant the player perks.
- Level 1 is Common.
- Level 2 is Rare.
- Level 3 is Epic.
- Level 4 is Legendary.
- Level 5 is Heirloom.
The game prevents players from swapping gear with the gear of a lower or equal level. However, players can swap armor for a lower level if their current armor has fewer shields. Also, players can swap between the two armor types Body Shield and Evo Shield, regardless of levels or shields, but they must hold if the other armor is weaker.

Materials
Players can find Materials in loot bins (5 for each bin), or at Material Stations (25 for each Station) that randomly generate near a Replicator. They don’t occupy any inventory slot and are kept after death; since they are player-exclusive, they cannot be looted off death boxes. There isn’t an amount limit for Materials.

Replicator
Replicators are stations which can turn materials into loot. There are eight different kinds of loot that can be crafted, with some items rotating daily or weekly. More replicators will be dropped into the map in later rounds. Their locations can be marked over the whole map from the dropship within the first 10 seconds.

Every day, two high-tier attachments are selected to be in Replicator loot. These items will not be available as ground loot for that day.

โ ๐ฐ Armour and Health
Any given Legend’s special abilities aside, there are three types of armor a player can find and equip: body armor, a helmet, and a knockdown shield. Body armor improves your character’s overall health and guards against damage. A helmet protects headshots. A knockdown shield is used when a character is downed, letting them put up a small shield to provide forward protection against incoming damage while they crawl to safety. All three armor types come in varying quality levels, with higher quality armor providing greater protection levels. Even when fully depleted, body armour can be rest armor using shield cells of assorted sizes, though this takes time.
When taking damage, damage applies to armor first. When the armor is fully depleted, characters take damage directly to their health. Health can be recovered with syringes or medkits scavenged from the field or certain abilities a character may have, though this takes time. Like most battle royales, when a character takes enough damage, they are “downed” or “knocked down,” leaving them crawling on the ground and mostly defenseless; if a teammate is still standing, they can pick up their downed teammate with a revival move and get them back into the fight with limited health (if a character is carrying a particular gold-quality knockdown shield, they can use its special ability to pick themselves up, though this takes longer).
If a downed character takes enough additional damage, they are “dead” and out of play. However, unlike most other battle royales, death is not necessarily the end. If a character is killed and a teammate is still active, they have 90 seconds to get to the killed character’s death box (the remains of their inventory) and recover their banner. Once a banner is recovered, the surviving teammate(s) can travel to a respawn beacon and use the banner. If successful, the lead character will be fully revived and return to the fight on that respawn beacon via dropship, albeit with an empty inventory.
If all squad members are downed or killed at the same time, the squad is eliminated from the game, meaning their game is over entirely. The members can either spectate other players still in the game or exit the game and return to the main menu to start over.
โ ๐งฐ Inventory
Players have limited inventory with which to carry any items or equipment scavenged from the field. A character can only carry up to two weapons at a time, each weapon with its own aforementioned set of modifications it can equip. They have one designated slot apiece for a helmet, body armor, knockdown shield, and backpack – the latter expand their inventory by providing additional inventory slots. As mentioned previously, the aforementioned equipment types vary quality, with higher quality gear providing improved protection or carrying capacity. The rarest gold-level equipment provides the best protection/capacity and exclusive special abilities. Their inventory consists of discrete slots with which they can carry other miscellaneous items, like syringes and medkits, shield cells, various ammunition types, ordnance, and unequipped weapon mods. They cannot carry spare weapons or duplicate pieces of armor. Inventory management will be crucial to success, as a player will have to decide what items are more valuable to them at any given moment.
โ ๐ฏ Firing Range
The Firing Range is the Firing Range and Training game modes map.
- Every weapon is available here, organized by ammo type.
Besides, the weapons are a limitless supply of Attachments, Grenades, Regen items, and Gear in every rarity. - Several targets are arranged for target practice.
The blue square targets will display damage done, while the closer targets can be hit with a headshot and will flip down when shot. - Three red DUMMIEs are standing by, each equipped with a Level 3 Body Shield, for players to shoot. They respawn quickly after being killed.
- Friendly Fire can be toggled in the setting menu.
This will cause all players in your group to become enemies of one another. Players will respawn in the caves. - A charge tower is located at the bottom of the far-right cave and recharges quickly.
There are currently two additional functions available in the Firing Range, each of which can be activated by having no weapons in your inventory, crouching and looking downwards in a specific location, and changing legends.
- Hostile DUMMIE
Activated in the catwalk on the roof of the far left cave. This causes the DUMMIEs to become hostile to players, patrolling the area and shooting with their guns: a Hemlok, a Peacekeeper, and an L-STAR fired in bursts.

Apex Legends currently has three maps: Kings Canyon, introduced at launch; World’s Edge, added in Season 3; and Olympus, added in Season 7.
At the start of each season, either a new map will be added to the game, or one of the current maps will receive major changes that also change the map’s loading screen. Minor map changes, called town takeovers, occur sparingly, and they come with events. Town takeovers are modeled after a Legend.
For Trios and Duos, the maps rotate once every 60, 90, or 120 minutes, except when a map receives changes, so players have time to get used to the changes. When a new map or map update comes out at the start of a new season, that map will be in rotation for one or two weeks. When a map receives a new town takeover, that map will be in rotation for two days.
For the Ranked Leagues, the maps rotate between the splits. Splits only feature one map at a time.
โ โ ๐น Kings Canyon
Kings Canyon is a map for Apex Legends located on the planet Solace.
It features an abundance of areas varying from military facilities to slums, with a river dividing it down the middle. It is an island filled with Creatures and surrounded by water on all sides, with hazardous cliffs below sea level.
Different versions of the map have been reused multiple times during its absence from the permanent playlist. A night-time version of the map was also made available during the Shadowfall limited-time mode and the Grand Soirรฉe event’s Kings Canyon Nighttime game mode.
Once a simple settlement on the planet Solace dating back to the earliest expeditions to the Frontier, the island known as Kings Canyon didn’t thrive until a century later when the now-defunct IMC built several outposts centered around scientific research and development. It’s rumored that the IMC conducted experiments using phase-shift technology here, although explorers have yet to find any evidence that proves this. To blow off steam, IMC soldiers station here would compete in gladiator-Esque combat in an area they nicknamed ‘Thunderdome.’ Years later, when the Syndicate commissioned the rebuilding of the island of Kings Canyon as the home of their newest bloodsport, they insisted Thunderdome remain untouched – a tribute to the earliest known predecessor of what we know today as ‘The Apex Games’
An EMP detonated by Crypto in the Repulsor Tower allowed the nearby Flyers and Leviathans to invade the island. The Leviathans made their home in the river and destroyed the settlements on it. The Legends were evacuated, and the games were put on hold due to the attack. This respite allowed the Syndicate to add new areas to the map, including a huge structure near the destroyed Bridges and Hydro Dam called The Cage and a camp near the Cascades called Containment. Continued disturbances in the arena forced the Syndicate to relocate the games to another arena at Talos, World’s Edge.
The games eventually returned to Kings Canyon. However, after a failed attempt at killing Revenant, Loba Andrade accidentally set off a chain of explosions that led to the destruction of a significant chunk of the island, forming the Broken Bay at what was once Skull Town and Thunderdome.

World’s Edge is a map introduced in Season 3 located on the planet Talos.
A harsh planet beset by intense volcanic activity, Talos was once deemed uninhabitable, and only small Luddite settlements took root there. However, it became a hotbed of IMC activity when a rare mineral compound was discovered beneath its surface. Heat-reducing towers were built to super-cool it’s natural lava flows to allow resource extraction – the facility that housed them was optimistically dubbed โNew Dawn,โ and the town of Worldโs Edge grew around it.
Decades ago, an explosion in one of the towers covered the surrounding area in a lethal flash freeze. Worldโs Edge was abandoned. Its only remaining inhabitants were a small community of hunters who once spurned modern technology (but tentatively accepted it again under the guidance of their beloved local hero, Bloodhound). However, its ruins and the planetโs energy-rich soil drew the attention of two critical groups: the Mercenary Syndicate and Hammond Robotics. After the Repulsor attack on King’s Canyon and the various attempts to rebuild it proved too much trouble than they were worth, Worldโs Edge became the second home of the Apex Games and a key operational center for Hammond Robotics, who installed the latest in modern mining technology – the Planet Harvester – to begin their own resource extraction.
Sorting Factory, located in this arena, was the murder of James “The Forge” McCormick, an incoming legend, by Revenant. Afterward, the entrance of Hammond Robotics’ Planetary Harvester into the arena changed its landscape, devastating Capitol City and opening up lava fissures. Hammond erected a couple more buildings during a season break. The rocket Arcadia was stationed near the Dome area of the arena alongside facilities for its maintenance.

Olympus is a map released in Season 7, located on the planet Psamathe.
Olympus was a city built on dreams. A utopia floating in clouds above Psamathe was once a place where the brightest minds in the Outlands could gather and exchange ideas, leading to breakthroughs in the sciences and arts. However, all dreams come to an end, and this one ended explosively: an accident in an experimental research facility led to the creation of the Phase Rift (a massive bubble of Phase energy), and the Outlandsโ best and brightest quickly abandoned the city.
However, Olympus itself was maintained by advanced computer systems, so it quickly found new buyers in the Outlandsโ elite. For 40 years, it served as a lavish vacation spot with the Rift as a tourist attraction. Unfortunately, the Rift grew unstable over time, and Olympus was fully evacuated six months ago. With the support of the Mercenary Syndicate, Hammond Robotics has transformed Olympus into a new stage for the Apex Games โ though why is anyoneโs guess.

๐ง Progression & Monetization
Apex Legends is a free-to-play title, meaning there is no cost to download the game and start playing immediately. There are presently four currencies available within the game:
- Crafting Metals, with which to directly get most cosmetics in the game
- Legend Tokens, with which to purchase new Legends and more exclusive cosmetics
- Apex Coins, the premium real-money currency with which to purchase anything in the game
- Heirloom Shards used to purchase heirlooms for different legends
The game also features cosmetic loot boxes called Apex Packs. Opening an Apex Pack gives a player three random items of varying rarity, ranging from currency to any customization, like weapon skins or Legend items (skins, banner pieces, quips, finishing moves, etc.). Apex Packs can be purchased directly with Apex Coins. Completing a game, win or lose, will award experience points (XP) that go towards a player’s account level. When the account levels up, they receive rewards, including free currency and Apex Packs. Sources of XP from a match include:
- Length of time survived in a match
- Damage dealt and kills secured
- Teammates revived or respawned
- Winning a match (or at least finishing in the top 3 squads)
- Being the kill leader and/or claiming the bounty on the kill leader (the player with the most secured kills that game; can be identified by looking at banners dotted around the map)
- Being on a champion squad or claiming the bounty on the champion (before the match begins, the game’s champion [highest-performing player in an immediately previous game] and their squad are revealed to the lobby)
- Playing a match as part of a premade squad (you receive an XP bonus just for playing with friends)
A seasonal Battle Pass can be purchased with Apex Coins when available and can be leveled up separate from a player’s account level by playing games and earning experience. Leveling the Battle Pass grants additional currencies, Apex Packs, and season-exclusive cosmetics.

Crafting Metals are one of three currencies in Apex Legends. This currency is used to unlock many of the standard cosmetics found in the Legends tab. Crafting cosmetics costs anywhere from 30 Crafting Metals to as high as 1,200 Crafting Metals.
This currency is special in that it can only be earned through Apex Packs’. If you get Crafting Metals in an Apex Pack, it’ll look like this:
The number of Crafting Metals you get per Apex Pack depends on the rarity level of the drop:
- Common Crafting Metal = 15
- Rare Crafting Metal = 30
- Epic Crafting Metal = 200
- Legendary Crafting Metal = 600
If you’ve managed to unlock all cosmetics in a rarity tier, you’ll start earning Crafting Metals at that rarity tier level in place of a cosmetic you would have earned otherwise. For instance, if you’ve earned all epic items, you’ll start earning epic Crafting Metals instead of duplicate cosmetics. Apex Packs do not drop duplicate cosmetics.
โ ๐ธ Legend Tokens
Legend tokens are a currency In Apex Legends That can be earned by Leveling up. You can use Tokens To unlock Legends (which cost 12,000 tokens) and some skins.
โ ๐น Apex Coins
Apex Coins are a premium currency in Apex Legends, only available through purchase in the shop with real money.
Apex Coins can be used to purchase most items in the game, including:
- Legends
- Apex Packs
- The seasonal Battle Pass
- Limited Weapons skin
- Limited Legend Skins
- Purchases in the Featured Shop
- Purchases of Legends in place of using Legend Tokens (750 coins each)
- Purchases of Apex Packs (100 coins each)
- Purchase of the available Battle Pass (950 Coins)

โ ๐ธ Heirloom Shards
Heirloom Shards are consumable items that can be redeemed towards very rare “Heirloom” items with bespoke dialogue and banner options and designs that mirror the legend they were created for. These Heirloom Shards Are extremely rare, as well as extremely cool. Back in the old days of Apex Legends, Heirlooms were only obtainable in two different ways; hope for the less than 1% chance to get the Apex Pack with the heirloom in it. That roughly translates to about 1 in 500 packs, and if you are a “Free to Play” player, this is really difficult, as packs are only rewarded every two level-ups, and to add salt to the wound was a randomized Heirloom. Today, you use Heirloom Shards to buy a Specific Heirloom, but the odds are that even if you are an lv 500 free to play player, you don’t have an heirloom yet as it is still a 1 to 500 chance.
โ How to play
This section will serve as a basic how-to-play guide for Apex Legends. Check back often, as new information is being added all the time! Feel free to edit this guide with any tips, tricks, and suggestions.
โ ๐ Basic Gameplay
Apex Legends is a battle royale game where 20 squads of 3 players each pick playable character classes called Legends and airdrop from a flying ship over an arena: either Kings Canyon or World’s Edge. On landing, they must search for weapons, gear, and other items to help them kill off the other teams while simultaneously staying inside of a shrinking safe-zone called The Ring. The last team still alive will be the winners.
Each Legend has 3 abilities unique to them: a tactical ability that can be periodically activated and has a cooldown between uses, a passive ability that is always active, and an ultimate ability used once charged. Ultimate abilities change over time and can be sped up by using Ultimate Accelerants. Some legends also have Perks that modify damage taken.
Each player has 100 health, and when they take enough damage to reach 0, they will enter a downed state. While downed, they can move around and ping and use a Knockdown Shield if they have one, but can not take other actions. A teammate can approach a downed player and spend 5 seconds reviving them. If the downed player takes enough additional damage or is not revived after enough time, they will be killed. Dead players can only return if one of their teammates collects a “banner” from their death box and brings it to a respawn beacon, which will call in a dropship that they will jump out of.

โ ๐๐ป Your First Match
- Early Game
As is expected with most battle royale games, players begin the match inside one dropship flying across the map in a straight line. Checking your map for the projected flight path is a good idea, as this allows you to predict the amount of initial traffic each named location will have. Locations near the drop ship’s flight path are usually densely populated at the start of the match because players can land at them more quickly than distant locations.As the jumpmaster, find out if your squad is looking for immediate action or a chance to get nicely geared, and then go ahead with the drop. Your two squad-members are automatically following your movement during the freefall until they decide to break away and fly on their own. Sticking together largely increases your chance of surviving once you land, but try to avoid landing right next to the jump-master, or else you’ll all be scrambling for loot in the same building. Detach from the jump-master when you are close to the ground and re-group with your squad after you’ve looted your own building and Supply Bins.
Once you’ve found weaponry and gear, collaborate with your squad when deciding where to go next. The safe-zone is ever-shrinking, and you will be dealt with damage for every second you’re outside of it. Be sure to check your map and head towards the areas inside of the next predicted safe-zone.
- Mid Game
You’ve looted your first location and have headed towards another one. Maybe you’ve gotten into a fight with another squad along the way, maybe not. When the mid-game approaches, it’s best to assume that most players have become equipped with better weaponry and gear. There’s a good chance that most players now have 150 health or more due to finding rare body armor and helmets.Be sure to stock up on ammunition and consumables as untouched locations have now become uncommon. If your squad is unable to recover after its next fight sufficiently, you must find more consumables. Be sure to look for backpacks as they increase the number of inventory slots you have for any held items.
Do not forget that you are inadvertently advertising your squad’s location to any other nearby squads by engaging in combat with another squad. Please don’t get caught off guard while looting their death boxes!
Speaking of death, have you died? If you are dead and gone, your squad has the opportunity to bring you back into the match by picking up the respawn chip from your death box and delivering it to a Respawn Beacon. (Beacons may be used only once before disappearing.)
- Late Game
Hey, you’ve made it to the late game. You’ll probably be facing the tough squads now. If your guns do not have attachments, you should really start looking for them, as they can dramatically increase the effectiveness of your weapons in combat. You should also definitely seek out epic body armor and helmets as most other squads are probably using them by now.Fights will be harder now that the unfortunate have been eliminated. Play cautiously by keeping your attention focused far ahead of your immediate location. Scale walls to avoid walking along obvious pathways. Use ziplines to traverse open areas quickly. If you enter a building, close the door on your way in as it may be the final giveaway that leads to your squad’s demise.
The safe-zone is getting quite small, and squads are encouraged to move quickly due to the unsafe areas ever-increasing damage per second. Stakes are high, and squads are alert. Do whatever it takes to increase your chances of survival. Control some high ground or maybe decide to camp in an area. Nothing is off the table when it’s life or death.

โ ๐ฌ Tips and Tricks
- Don’t forget to make use of your abilities. It can be easy to get caught up in pure gunfights while neglecting the abilities that could give you a crucial advantage.
- For new players, if you want to survive, drop away from the path of the plane.
- The hot zone and the supply ships have more loot, but that also means more players will go there.
- Always pick up a body shield from a fresh death box. It will always be fully recharged once equipped. Please pick it up to avoid having to recharge your shields and avoid getting ambushed.
- Wear a Headset or Earbuds if you can. This will allow you to hear enemy footsteps better, resulting in an advantage over your opponents.
- Be careful when using airstrikes. They are very loud and visible from far away, and more enemies might come to join the action!
- Try to find a Legend you enjoy and are comfortable using (often referred to as a main). Being experienced with one or two Legends will give you an advantage over players who don’t know the Legend’s main and make you more likely to win.
- If you are having trouble aiming, spend a few hours in the Firing Range to learn the recoil of all weapons. A few hours doing that will significantly help your aim in the months ahead.
