The Completionist’s Guide to Zoo Tycoon

Overview

For all those completionists out there: includes full animal lists, achievement explanations, and more.

Introduction

Welcome to The Completionist’s Guide to Zoo Tycoon! This isn’t a how-to guide, although I’m happy to do a FAQ down the bottom if there’s enough interest in people understanding the mechanics a little more in-depth than what this offers–it’s just a guide on everything there is to do and see for those people who like to have something in front of them to check off and see progress on. The guide is divided into the following sections:

Tutorial Levels

A list of all the tutorial modes available, with details.

Campaign Mode

A list of all the campaign modes available, with details.

Challenge Mode

A list of all the challenge modes available, with details.

Awards

List of possible in-game awards for accomplished zookeepers.

Achievements

List of available achievements and their descriptions.

Animals (Original and DLC)

Guide to all the animals available, their preferred exhibits, number of companions, animal group, and level of vulnerability.

Hidden Coins

Coins are hidden on the exhibits you must take a photo of for completion.

Simple Text Checklists

Without all the more in-depth information contained in the prior sections.

Tutorial Levels

There are ten tutorial levels that don’t need to be completed to unlock anything, but which are useful in familiarising yourself with the controls and mechanics. Plus, if you like seeing absolutely everything in a game (like I do), you’ll probably play through them anyway just because. The tutorials are as follows (and they’re pretty simple, so I haven’t covered them in any depth):

Tutorial Zoo 1 – Europe – (Basic Controls & Gameplay)

This tutorial teaches control basics, how to build your zoo, and how to keep your animals and guests happy.

Tutorial Zoo 2 – North America – (Zoo View, Interactions)

In this tutorial, you will learn about Zoo View, and how to interact with your animals.

Tutorial Zoo 3 – North America – (Placing Exhibit Items)

In this tutorial, you will learn about adding exhibit items to meet the needs of your animals.

Tutorial Zoo 4 – North America – (Zoo Construction & Pings)

In this tutorial, you will learn about zoo construction, moving attractions, and using the Ping system to identify guest needs and how to meet them.

Tutorial Zoo 5 – South Asia – (Fame & Zoo Maintainance)

In this tutorial, you will learn about Zoo Fame levels and how to maintain your zoo.

Tutorial Zoo 6 – North America – (Research)

In this tutorial, you will learn about the different types of research you can use to make your zoo more efficient, bring down costs, and learn to use new items.

Tutorial Zoo 7 – Northern Europe – (The Zoo Economy)

In this tutorial, you will learn about the zoo economy, how to make a profit, and how to advertise your zoo.

Tutorial Zoo 8 – Caribbean – (Advanced Animal Care)

In this tutorial, you will learn about animal levels, moving animals, breeding animals, and releasing animals into the wild.

Tutorial Zoo 9 – South America – (Zoo Customisation & Photography)

In this tutorial, you will learn how to customise your zoo, how to take photographs, and how to manage your photo albums.

Tutorial Zoo 10 – North Africa – (Staff)

In this tutorial, you will learn about the different staff types and how to hire, train, and fire them.

Challenge Mode (Pt. 1: Outback Animal Reserve, Scandinavia Zoo, & Alpine Zoo)

Challenge mode starts you off with a small amount of money and challenges you to build a zoo while completing milestones on your way to completing the Zoo Collection for each location. The zoos don’t always feature the same species, so you’ll have to play multiple zones and transfer animals from one zoo to another to fill out your collections. In each zoo, there is one Star Species that MUST be transferred from a particular different zoo location by sending that animal to the reserve (the option next to sell in the animal’s menu). For the most efficient play-through order, see the Checklist on Challenge Mode below. Another quirk of challenge mode is that it does NOT make traditional save states–the game automatically saves any progress you make in an area unless you clear that save information.

When you finish a challenge zoo, send ALL your animals from that zoo to the reserve (releasing level 15s as you go). It’s annoying because there’s no sorting feature in the reserve, but saves a ton of money in the next zoo when you can just select your animals from there without any adoption costs.

There are twenty challenge locations all up, detailed below (the number before each animal denotes level that the animal becomes available):

The achievements for these come in the following flavours:

Challenge Achievements:
Progress on each Collection Challenge can be seen in the Challenge Menu by going to ‘Zoo Collection’. COLLECTION ACHIEVEMENTS

Can be completed in any mode.

These achievements are the grindier ones of the games, but also the most pleasing if you’re like me and really enjoy checking off collectibles. See the Animal & Colour Variants and the Hidden Coin section for more information on how to complete these. The collection achievements come in the following subgroups:

Photography Achievements:
There are 25 albums to fill. Twenty-four of those are animal albums, filled by taking a photo of EVERY animal specials as well as a photo of every species’s colour variant. See the Animals & Colour Variants section for more information on breeding colour variants.

  • Snap Happy: (Fill a photo album.)
  • Photographer Extraordinaire: (Fill at least 25 photo albums.)

Breeding Achievements:
Every time you breed an animal, there’s a chance that the offspring will be a colour variant. Your best bet for getting these is to just keep breeding, selling the offspring to make way for more, and releasing the parents when they hit level 15 and stop breeding. Working through challenge mode will help you grind out these ones. Grind it out in the European Zoo to also get the award for 100 babies born in one zoo.
NOTE: Don’t forget to breed an albino polar bear. The campaign bear may throw you off.

  • One of Each: (Breed every original animal type.)

Hidden Coins Pt. 1

There are 32 hidden coins found obscured within various exhibits, usually within the wall or shelter (but not always). To add it to your albums, you need to take a photo of the coin in the appropriate exhibit. Ensure that when you take the picture the lens finder bit turns yellow and that it says ‘saved to Hidden Coin album’, otherwise you’ll need to take the picture again.

Hidden Coins Images:

Parrot Coin: Alpine Small Exhibit
On the left wall of the exhibit over the shelter door, up high.

Goose Coin: Alpine Medium Exhibit
On the left side of the shelter, to the back, about three quarters up the wall. Visible between two pines as you round the corner.

Wombat Coin: Alpine Large Exhibit
Go up the sloped, grey paving path on the right side of the exhibit. The coin is on a rock near the animal entrance to the shelter, impossible to miss when facing the exhibit.

Anteater Coin: Andean Plateau Small Exhibit
Behind the exhibit on the right side, very visible. Just over head-height.

Llama Coin: Andean Plateau Medium Exhibit
On the right side of the shelter, just follow the path and it’s just over head-height.

Tapir Coin: Andean Plateau Medium Exhibit
From where the llama coin is, look to the right inside the exhibit. Visible on the far wall.

Alpaca Coin: Andean Plateau Large Exhibit
On the upper pathway, to the left side of the shelter, above the entrance to the tunnel and to the right. Up high.

Caiman Coin: Andean Plateau Large Exhibit
Behind the exhibit, on the right side of the back shelter wall (the rock area. About head-height.

Cougar Coin: Andean Plateau Large Exhibit
Stand in the angled corner at the front of the exhibit and look in towards the bank of rocks visible. You may have to zoom in with your camera. The cougar coin is right against the ground, very hidden.

Bear Coin: Grasslands Small Exhibit
To the left-hand side of the shelter, on the wall, as you walk around. Almost directly above the enclosure wall, very easy to see.

Capybara Coin: Grasslands Medium Exhibit
On the right, side/back wall of the shelter. Very easy to see as you walk around the path.

Falcon Coin: Grasslands Large Exhibit
Stand at the front of the exhibit somewhere with a view of the front of the right side wall of rocks within the exhibit. The falcon coin is on them.

Platypus Coin: Grasslands Large Exhibit
On the lower walkway behind the exhibit, look into the exhibit and onto the left wall of rocks. The platypus coin is down there.

Hidden Coins Pt. 2

Possum Coin: Outback Small Exhibit
Right on the front of the exhibit shelter, impossible to miss.

Numbat Coin: Outback Medium Exhibit
On the inside of the tall rock at the front of the exhibit, very easy to see as you walk around the path.

Crocodile Coin: Outback Large Exhibit
On the lower level, walk into the bit of the path that cuts into the exhibit and look to the animal shelter. It’s very visible from here.

Jaguar Coin: Outback Large Exhibit
Stand looking at the right rock wall inside the exhibit, on the lower level. The coin is on this wall.

Kangaroo Coin: Outback Large Exhibit
This one is on the left rock wall inside the exhibit. Make sure you’re on the lower level to view it, looking in.

Fossa Coin: Savannah Small Exhibit
Over the doorway of the shelter. Stand at the front looking in and you’ll see it.

Binturong Coin: Savannah Medium Exhibit
This one is pretty hidden. It’s INSIDE the animal shelter and only visible from a certain angle, as well as being obscured pretty well by the shadows. If you stand on the left side and look into the shelter with your camera viewfinder, you should see it.

Gila Monster Coin: Savannah Large Exhibit
Same as the cougar coin, stand in the angled corner at the front of the exhibit and look inwards towards the bank of rocks visible.

Armadillo Coin: Savannah Large Exhibit
On the right-hand upper walk, it’s above your head and slightly to the right as you walk under the rock arch.

Tiger Coin: Temperate Forest Small Exhibit
Behind the exhibit on the back wall to the left. Very easy to see.

Porcupine Coin: Temperate Forest Medium Exhibit
On the left side of the outer rock wall, up high as you walk around the path. Keep the camera angled up and you’ll see it.

King Quail Coin: Temperate Forest Large Exhibit
On the right side back wall, lower level. Fairly high up, so keep the camera angled high as you walk around the outer path of the exhibit.

Koala Coin: Temperate Forest Large Exhibit
Stand right at the front of the exhibit, looking in. The coin is above the entrance to the shelter, very hidden. Using your camera to zoom in will help.

Hidden Coins Pt. 3

Snake Coin: Tropical Small Exhibit
At the back, look HIGH. This one is hard to explain without picture reference, but if you look along the top of the exhibit the whole way behind it, you should see it.

Agouti Coin: Tropical Medium Exhibit
On the left-hand back wall of the exhibit, very easy to see as you walk around the outskirts.

Tasmanian Devil Coin: Tropical Large Exhibit
This one took me FOREVER. You need to walk up the upper path from the left side, keeping a very close eye on the right side rock as you go. Don’t enter the tunnel–the coin is just outside, hidden by some bright green leaves. If you keep the camera tilted right, you’ll see it.

Mongoose Coin: Tundra Small Exhibit
On the right side of the shelter wall (inside the exhibit), sort of hidden but visible if you stick to the wall as you walk around and look into the exhibit as soon as you come around.

Owl Coin: Tundra Medium Exhibit
On the left upper wall of the animal shelter, on the outside. Just keep the camera angled high as you walk around.

Trumpeter Bird Coin: Tundra Large Exhibit
Face the rock wall inside the exhibit, staying on the lower path. Looking in from the front is a good bet to see it. It’s on the rock wall.
