Introduction
This guide is designed to fulfill two needs. (1) To provide new players with a comprehensive overview of blue magic. (2) To provide end of game players (i.e., those on disk 4), who simply want to know the quickest way to obtain Blue Magic spells (see End of Game [Fast Track]).
- For the new player, this guide defines what Blue Magic is, how to obtain it using the character Quina, and outline a glossary of each enemy Quina consumes to learn a new Blue Magic.
- End of game players may skip to Quick Start Table and World Map listed for the End of Game players.
- Both users may be particularly interested in the glossary, which lists the magic power cost, type of enemy needed to consume, location. Each gloassry contains a picture and video detailing how to learn each Blue Magic spell from the respective enemies.
DISCLAIMER: There are several methods to obtaining each Blue Magic. While this guide demonstrates where you can locate each Blue Magic, it is designed to tell users aiming to collect each Blue Magic at its earliest availability, or summarize where each can be located for an End of Game Users. In other words, the method listed in this guide may not be the easiest way to obtain each Blue Magic.
Blue Magic
Blue Magic is a skillset consisting of abilities used by monsters. Most of the time a character capable of using Blue Magic is known as a Blue Mage. Blue Magic first appeared in Final Fantasy V and has since appeared in nearly every game in the main series (excluding Final Fantasy XII and XIII). The exact method of learning Blue Magic has varied, but all involve them being learned (directly or indirectly) from enemies.
In Final Fantasy IX Blue magic is learned by defeating enemies with the Eat or Cook commands used by the character Quina.
Quina
Quina Quen is a playable character in Final Fantasy IX, who is a Blue Mage with the ability to cast Blue Magic obtained from consuming specific enemies. Unlike other Final Fantasy characters Quina does not learn new Blue Magic skills by being hit by an attack. Instead Quina consumes the enemy who possesses the attack (see Quick Start Table: First Attained) with the Eat or Cook commands. There are a total of 24 Blue Magic spells which can be acquired throughout the game.
Recruiting Quina:
Quina will join your party permanently the first time you visit Qu’s Marsh. Please note that recruiting Quina on disk 1 is optional. You may obtain Quina the first time you visit the Qu’s Marsh (see World Map: First Attainable).
Tips and Tricks:
- The Steam “I’m So Blue” achievement is unlocked if Quina uses 100 Blue Magic spells.
- Toward the start of the game the temporary character, Cinna, levels are transferred to Quina, should Cinna’s level be higher than the party average upon Quina’s joining the party. Cinna’s skills will not transfer.
Blue Magic Demonstration:
Eat / Cook Command
The following section provides a brief overview of the two abilities Quina can use to consume enemies. Note that the eat command is the default ability, whereas cook is granted upon Trance.
What is the eat command?
The Eat command is the ability required for obtaining new Blue Magic skills.
Once Quina’s enemies drop to less than 25% health of their maximum hit points (HP), Quina can instantly defeat the enemy by eating it. If Quina successfully eats their enemy, a new skill will be learned.
Tips and Tricks:
- Quina may only learn a single skill once. Eating additional enemies which provide the same skill will not have any additive effects.
- If you are attempting to learn a Blue Magic ability and your opponent could be killed in a single hit, use Demi-based abilities, or Quina’s Matra Magic ability. These attacks are designed to reduce your enemy’s health to a fraction of their HP, ensuring that your enemy will survive the attack.
What is the cook command?
The cook command is a special form of the eat command, which allows Quina to consume enemies below 50% health. In order to use the Cook command, Quina must be in Trance form.
Trance is the Limit Break system in Final Fantasy IX that temporarily transforms a character into a more powerful form, increasing all physical damage by a factor of 1.5x. While in Trance, party members have their innate unique skills enhanced in some fashion. Importantly, when in Trance form, Quina’s Eat Command becomes the Cook Command.
When Quina is in Trance, the Eat command is replaced with the Cook command. The application of Cook is identical to Eat in every way, except for being able to consume an enemy whose HP is below 50% as opposed to 25%.
Blue Magic Spells
The following section contains spell specific information. Specifically, it consists of two Quick Start Tables, two world maps, and a glossary of all 24 Blue Magic Spells. In addition to displaying a picture of the enemy Quina must consume to learn each spell, the glossary contains MP cost, location, description, as well as a video demonstrating how to defeat each enemy.

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)
Q: Is it possible to miss a Blue Magic Spell and not be able to obtain it later?
A: No, while some spells are easier to obtain at certain points in the game (e.g., Twister), you may learn a spell at any point in the game. However in terms of efficiency you can learn spells as you naturally progress throughout the game. Obtaining spells as you play the game is recommended, as some spells become more difficult to acquire. For example, Goblin punch is hard to get in disk 4 as it is extremely rare to encounter a goblin at such a late point in the game.
Q: I never got Quina on the first disc, can I still get Quina on the second disc?
A: Yes, just go to Qu’s Marsh and help them with the frogs quest. If you do not recruit Quina prior to Burmecia, s/he will join your party in the second half of Disc 2.
Q: Is Quina a secret character like Yuffie and Vincent in Final Fantasy 7?
A: No, Quina is not optional character. S/he will join the party when you travel through Qu’s Marsh. If you keep progressing through the story line s/he will end up in your party.
