Tips and tricks for Subsistence

Tips and tricks

Overview

A quick guide to help new players get started.

General tips

  • Pressing the Pause key on your keyboard will pause the game.
  • Pressing F8 will save the game.
  • Drag blueberries over a water bottle to mix them together to make Berry Water, this creates a better alternative to water providing hydration and fruit & veg.
If you drag multiple blueberries over multiple water bottles, you have the option to mix them all or just one.

Dying
  • When you die all your belongings will be stored in a crate in the vicinity of your location, this can be between 5-10 metres away. Looking around using the view camera during the ‘You are dead’ screen can make finding it a little easier.
  • You have around 5 mins to retrieve your belongings before the crate disappears and its contents will be gone for good.
  • As soon as any storage device is built, you will no longer receive a pistol when you respawn.
  • You do not automatically spawn at your base upon death when you have installed your BCU, for that you will need a bed. Each spawn will cost power/mass in advance.

Housing
  • Placing a roof on your house increases the warmth, placing a ceiling will have the same effect.
  • Closing your door will increase the warmth.

Loot

Loot can be found by opening one of the four different types of crates.
Items found in crates but not available elsewhere are:

  • Electronic Parts
  • Nails
  • Matches
  • Gunpowder
  • Ammo casings
  • Water
  • Apples
  • Protein Bars
  • Tomato seeds
  • Cotton seeds

Resources

Wood

Hit trees with your axe, the number of logs retrieved will depend on the size of the tree.
When you have hit the limit for a tree, a cross will appear in the cursor.

Scrap Metal

Scrap metal can be picked up from steel girders found around the map.

Fibers

Fibers – used to make cordage – can be difficult to see at first but once you know what you’re looking for you’ll find them all over.

Blueberry bush

Look just like the fiber plants, but have blue berries on them.

Medicinal plants

Medicinal plants can be found around the map. They are easier to identify than the fiber plants as noted by their large green leaves.

Iron/Copper

There will sometimes be small deposits on the rocks around the map.
The ore can be mined using the Axe or the Pickaxe; the Pickaxe will yield more resources.
It’s much easier to mine while crouching.

Meat/Animal fat/Cloth/Feathers

Can be obtained by, surprisingly, killing animals.
The amount of resources you receive depends on the level of the animal you kill.

Base Control Unit (BCU)

  • The BCU needs to be attached to a wall.
  • When you place your first BCU you will receive a free Lock Pick, further BCU’s will not give you a Lock Pick.
  • When you place your BCU a beacon is activated, this allows you to see your base from anywhere on the map but also alerts hunters to your presence. The hunters usually take 2-5 in game days to arrive.
  • When you die the beacon will activate 100 seconds after you revive.
  • The BCU can store (and slowly generates) 500 Power and 100 Mass. To expand the amount stored you will need Power/Mass Storage. When you reach 500 Power/100 Mass the BCU will stop generating them, you will need a Power Generator, Recycler and Mass Fabricator to generate more.

Once you place your BCU, you will gain access a number of additional recipes; creating these recipes will require Power and Mass.

Base Light

An electrical light to illuminate your base at night. Can be turned on/off. Consumes Power when active.

Wood Burner

An upgrade to the campfire, has the added benefit of being able to turn animal fat into biofuel.

Refinery

Turns Iron and Copper ores into Iron/Copper fragments. Can be upgraded to refine multiple ores at once and improve power consumption while active.

Bed

Allows you to set a respawn point.
Respawns cost Power/Mass. The first respawn is free, further respawns cost power/mass in advance.

Small Power Generator

Uses Biofuel to generate power for your base.

Plant Bed

You can plant up to 8 seeds (Cotton/Tomato). Requires water and fertiliser (ash, chicken poop) fruit can also be used to provide a little water and fertiliser.
Can be upgraded with a grow light to allow the crops to grow at night and inside (can be turned on/off), a further upgrade reduces the power cost of the grow light.
Each cotton seed produces 3 cotton, each tomato seed produces 2 tomatoes (at least they did for me, it may be random).

Power Storage

Each Power Storage container allows you to store an extra 500 Power.

Mass Storage

Each Mass Storage container allows you to store an extra 100 Mass.

Weapons Bench

Allows you to create and upgrade your weapons.
Weapon upgrades available include damage, clip size and reload speed.

Fridge

Permanently preserves your meat. Requires power.

Recycler

Turns your unwanted items into Mass at the cost of Power.

Mass Fabricator

Uses Power to generate Mass.

Animal Housing

Catch rabbits and chickens and breed them in here.
Upgrades allow the animals to go free range where they can reach level 10 and a feces tray that catches animal poop that can be used as fertilizer.
Chickens will lay 1 egg per level at level 3+ for a total of 7 eggs.
Higher level animals provide higher quality meat.

Hammer

A tool used to repair your base. Each repair costs wood logs.

Lock Pick

Used to open locked crates. Single use.

Sofa

No current use, but adds a homely touch to your base.
