Tips, Tricks, and Techniques For The AWP

Overview

This guide will explain the basics of awping, ways to improve, and techniques that players use to have the advantage.

Sensitivity

Sensitivity is an extreme importance while using any gun in CSS. While awping has a different set of ways to adjust the sensitivity. One of the best ways to adjust your sensitivity is to make it slow / fast enough that you will be accurate with rifles and pistols. This will help in close encounters and help you with movement. The main adjustment for sniping in general is through the console command zoom_sensitivity_ratio. This allows your main sensitivity to stay the same but as soon as you scope in your sensitivity will change depending on how high or low you set the number. The regular setting for this command is zoom_sensitivity_ratio 1.0. If you do adjust this try changeing it by only .1 at a time or you may end up changing it more than you want.

Side Arms

It is important for an awper to always have a pistol that they are confortable with. The best way to figure out which pistol is most comfortable for you is by trying each one out in a deathmatch server or any de / aim servers. This is another reason why you need to be comfortable with your regular sensitivity. Most times an awper is extremely vulnerable at close range, this is why its important to land precise shots with a pistol.

Types of awpers

Their are 2 main types of awpers in CSS.

The Tracker: These type of awpers like to follow the target, and lead the target into their shots.
The Flicker: These type of awpers flick for most of there shots and are usually able to hit leading shots aswell.

But most awpers usually use all the techniques they can therefore mixing it up between the two. Both of these techniques are valid and it takes time for people to learn which one they lean toward the most. You can find this out by Practicing in your own server against bots and in deathmatch servers. Once you learn which type of awper you are you can start practice different ways to use these tactics to give you the advantage.

Knowing maps and where enemys will be located

This is a pretty basic tip but it is extremely important especially for awpers to learn. Knowing where enemies will be coming from will allow the awper to set up in a position that gives you the advantage and allows you to pick how to fight in a conflict. These usually involve picking angles where you know they have to cross over, and finding the safest place for you to set up. Learning the maps just comes from expierience of playing the game. But another easy way to learn is to create your own server and walk through all the maps experimenting.

Angles

Angles are one of the most important things to an awper to learn. Holding an angle usually means that the awper his sitting in a spot where they can just see around a cornor or box giving them the first opportunity to fire at the enemies before they know where the awper is. Angles are like positioning of your crosshair or scope. The awper usually looks for a vantage point where they will be most safe and where they know enemies will have to go through.

This can be learned by playing the game more or createing your own server and finding out whats most comfortable for you and learning how to hold angles and where to hold them.

Reaction Time

Reaction time is key for awpers to hit their shots especially while holding small angles. Alot of times newer awpers try to hold to tight of angles and are missing shots because they haven’t gained the reaction time required to land the shots quick enough. Reaction time is usually the distiguishing factor between life and death. The faster you are and the more accurate you can land your shots the better chance you will have to surviving a conflict. The best way to gain reaction time is to play in deathmatch servers. Deathmatch servers have people spawning every where which forces you to stay on your toes.

Peaking

Peaking is the movement of the awper into a shot. The movement is crucial and it all depends on the angle that the awper is holding and reaction time of the awper. There are many different types of peaks and they are all situational. The most important part of peaking is that you need to make sure that you are not moving while taking your shot. This usually means you have to be standing still. This can be hard for some people to do because it sounds kind of stupid but their are many peaks that allow you to get the upper hand on the situation while peaking.

Jump Peaks: Jumping around the cornor or around a box and getting your scope on the enemy while in mid air so your shot is lined up by the time you hit the ground. This is a way to dodge a headshot or awp shot.

Crouch peak: peaking then going crouched is while your scope is on the enemy. This is a much more risky of a peak because you are slow while peaking but can sometimes save you if your enemy has his crosshair or scope at headshot level.

Double peak: This is when you strafe out of covor find where your enemy is and strafe back into covor. after knowing where the enemy is you can pre scope the cornor strafe back around the cornor and have your shot already lined up for you.

These are just a few basic peaks. You can experiment with all theses and more to make your own techniques on how to peak and mix it up to make it harder for the enemy to pinpoint what your going to do.

Pre Scoping

Pre scoping is probably one of the most valid tactics for an awper to use. This usually requires knoledge of the map and understanding the enemies movement. How this works is the awper is already scoped in on a cornor or an angle but doesn’t see the target yet. You usually give yourself enough room for the reaction time shot when the enemy comes around the cornor. This is also known as leading but with the extent that you have yet to see the enemy, you are just guessing his travel path. This can be easily learned through deathmatch. The best way to learn to by pre scoping a cornor to a choke point or a popular spot where enemies are always going. This allows the awper to have an advantage over the enemy due to the fact that the awper is already aiming at the point while the enemies are not.

Mixing it up

As an awper you always want to be mixing it up as much as possible. As soon as you are spotted you will be targeted as a high priority target. You always want to keep the enemies on their toes and make sure that they can’t guess your movements. This will always allow you to have the upper hand in conflicts and allow you to get more accurate shots. The best way to learn something is to take it into your own hands. This means that you can take all the tips and tricks but use it in a way you feel will work the best and use them in the situations that you feel it would work in.
