How to bunny hop for Counter-Strike: Source

How to bunny hop

Overview

A simple guide to get you started in bhop/movement scene~

Introduction

Bunny hop or in other words bhop/bhopping doesn’t really require any introductions but my friends or even many players don’t understand it that well and that’s why i’m making a guide about it.

Bunny hopping is used to gain more speed to travel from point A to B in a shorter amount of time which gives the player an advantage compared to others that run normally; Make your enemies miss the shots and give you a chance for attacking, or just to be a show off and impress your teammates/perhaps get called out for cheating..

Before we start

There’s a few things you need to know before you start on trying to figure it out on your own or anything, most of these would help you along the way.

  • Bunny hopping or movement isn’t a mandatory thing nor is it required to be considered a good player, count it more as an addition to your skills.
  • No matter how good or bad you are you will always hit a poorly timed jump here and there that slows you down or stops you completely, that’s just how it works.
  • You’ll encounter forums or discussions that include scrips or cheats, it’s better for you and the community to stay away from them as there is no good ending in it.. vac banned account, building a bad reputation for yourself etc etc.
  • If you just want to get your movement better without having to worry about timing your hops just type “sv_enablebunnyhopping 1” in your console in a private server.
  • Use “bind mwheelup +jump” or “bind mwheeldown +jump” in your console or config to use your mouse scroll for jumping as it gives you more chances to hit the jump at the right time when you’re landing, using space is really hard and not efficient compared to scroll.
  • Use “cl_showpos 1” in your console or config to see how fast you’re moving, i suggest using it while you’re practicing just to get an idea of fast you are.
  • I made a config already for the people that can’t sync everything well together or cannot crouch while bunny hopping in another guide which you can find here

Strafing

What’s strafe?

strafe is what you do to gain speed while you’re in air to jump longer distances than what normal running and jumping does; for example while you’re running with a knife or a pistol(both pistol and knife have the same running speed in source unlike global offensive) you can reach 250 velocity which is the max by default, but with strafing you can go beyond that.. depending on how good the strafes are.

Your velocity is also measured in units per second, basically meaning when you’re running with your pistol or your knife you’re passing 250 units per second.

Before diving into strafe jumping i recommend synchronizing your mouse with the direction you desire; as in going left with “A” or “D” key and using your mouse to follow it smoothly, the smoother your mouse movement is the better your strafe will be. It is really important to synchronize your mouse movement with the keyboard because otherwise you won’t gain more speed as a matter of fact you will lose some, keep practicing until your muscle memory is good enough for actual strafe jumping, it’s easier this way and you’ll appreciate the time you spent on doing this.

Alright; about the strafe jump and doing it correctly, you can start by running forward and jumping when you’re ready. Remember to let go of “W” once you jump as we no longer need it in strafing nor bunny hopping unless we’re doing it sideways. once you’re in mid air you want to hold your left or right key and smoothly pointing your crosshair at that direction, there is absolutely no need to turn all the way unless that’s what you want to do. Even the slightest bit of mouse movement will make you gain speed as long as it is pointed towards the location you’re aiming at.

That’s basically it.. simple right? well you can call it simple to learn but it is definitely hard to master.

Since i don’t have a pc that is capable of recording a gameplay demonstrating strafing you can search “CS:GO – Strafing & LongJump Tutorial (w/ custom map)” in youtube and a video by the user named Trilluxe will come up, he explains everything in detail.

Bunny hopping

Bunny hopping!

bunny hopping is pretty much making a chain of strafes in air to gain speed but the difference here is that we’re not just trying to land a jump from a certain obstacle to another or anything. Our point is to travel faster in shorter amount of time and that’s what bunny hopping does when done right.

First we need to know what types of bunny hopping there is:

  • Sideways(Advanced): For this type you will use “W” and “S”, using “W” to turn left and “S” to turn right.
  • Half sideways(Advanced): For this type you’ll hold “W” during the bunny hop while pressing “A” and “D” to turn left and right.
  • Normal: Using “A” and “D” only and strafing left and right, either in wide or sharp strafes.
  • W only(wtf): Literally using “W” only..

You can always search in youtube to see the styles by yourself.

There’s also more into normal movement during bunny hopping; some do zig zag while others prefer doing half circles, some just go in a straight line doing little strafes in air to gain speed.

Just like strafing; start running till you hit the max velocity, jump and let go of “W”(unless you’re doing it half sideways), strafe to left or right(this depends on the person performing so see which side you’re the most comfortable with), once you’re about to land you want to time your next jump to continue the chain and not break it(that’s why we use scroll to give us more chances to hit the right jump), if done correctly you’ll be able to gain even more speed and keep on bunny hopping.

Keep in mind that the first attempts always last about five or less chained hops and that is totally normal, even i struggle sometimes. ^^’

Practice makes perfect always remember that and don’t go too harsh on yourself while you’re learning, it’s not a thing everyone can do at their first try or maybe they never even get the hang of it who knows..

People to look up to

People that i look up to from the movement aspect are:

  • Phoon, the legend himself. Of course he has a place in my heart and he’s one of the best movement players out there to this day! Sadly he took his videos down and there’s not much heard about him nowadays but thankfully there’s reuploads..
  • Blasdfa, you can’t deny the man got insanely good moves.
  • Lolyou, chad of the cs community! One of the all time favorite movement players in my list.

there’s obviously more players out there that are really talented/skilled in movement, or even newer ones like “woke” but there’s some unnecessary drama around them all the time about scripting or cheating. If you ask about my opinion the old is the gold so stick with watching old ones if you want to motivate yourself and get better.

The end

If you made it this far, thank you for reading this guide and i hope that it’s helpful.

My apologies for having no footage of my own to include as my pc has died on me recently.

Hope you enjoyed, please rate and comment those are always appreciated and have a nice day!
