Overview
How to change your leader’s portrait and name in-game! This guide will show you how to have Joseph Stalin leading France or Rommel leading Czechoslovakia! Thanks to Yard1 for providing the tools for this to work.
Downloading the ‘rename faction’ and ‘rename leader’s name’ mod from the workshop
Look for Yard1’s rename faction and rename leader’s name mod in the steam workshop. Your game must be 1.9+ There’s no way for this to work unless it’s 1.9.
Modifying the ‘Rename faction’ mod
Right now, the ‘rename faction’ mod only renames the faction, obviously. So, we must modify the files to change the leader’s portrait instead.
1. Find the ‘rename faction’ mod file in Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent3943601690642183
2. Click on ‘commons’
3. Then click on ‘scripted_effects’
4. And open up rename_faction_effects.txt
Modifying the text file
When you open up the .txt file, you would see this:
1. Change “set_faction_name” to “set_country_leader_portrait = {“
2. Add a line and add “portrait =” and then close the bracket. Your final product should look like this:
WARNING: DO NOT DELETE THE “[CHAR##]”, simply shift them down.
Creating a bank of portraits
Now that you’re done with modding, you now must create a bank of portrait for you to use. The reason why you want to do this is because these portrait names are too long.
1. Create a folder in SteamsteamappscommonHearts of Iron IVgfxleaders
2. Name the folder something really short like “A” or “1” IT MUST BE BELOW 3 LETTERS!
3. find some portraits that you like in the folders and put them in your new folder:
4. Rename the portrait into something short like mine is named “LT.dds”:

1. Open up HOI4 and activate ‘rename faction name’ and ‘rename leader name’ mods.
2. Click on the rename faction button:
3. Type “gfx/leaders/A/LT.dds”
4. Enjoy!
