Overview
The Wick Survival Guide will hopefully serve to help keep you alive throughout the night, while also collecting all the items. This guide covers the base game only, and does not touch upon the expansion.
General Tips & Tricks
Glimmer
If you see a glimmer/glint in the distance, that will be a candle.
Conserve stamina
Try not to run unless you’re running away, or run in short bursts. Last thing you want to do is be running everywhere only to run out of stamina at the same time you encounter an enemy.
The map is static
Each time you begin the game, the map will be the same. The school bus will be in the same location, the campfire, etc. Your spawn point will be different each time, but if you know the layout, you’ll know where to go.
Sound is important
Music will gradually get louder as a child nears you, and will slow down as you escape them.
Use matches sparingly
You are limited to six matches per hour and you cannot find any more. Use them only to light candles if you can. If your candle burns out, run toward a glimmer in the darkness for as long as possible, and only strike a match when you’re a few feet away from another candle, so that you can immediately light it without wasting another match.
Tolling bell
I haven’t figured out what the random bell toll is. In the midnight hour (I want more, more, moreeeeee), the bell toll signals the end and that you’ve survived. In subsequent hours, it seems to mark the halfway point of survival, but I’m not sure. You have any idea? Let me know.
Always stay lit
One of the hints in the game tells you they’re more aggressive in the dark. This is as true as can be. Tim will chase you for longer, Tom pops his head out more often, so on and so forth.
Brightness
Wick, being a horror game, is best played in the dark with headphones, and the initial recommendation to turn down the gamma works quite well.
However, you can turn the brightness up to give yourself a slight advantage. It won’t help you drastically, because the game is designed to make your view distance very short, and obfuscates the distance with a low draw distance and well placed fog. What a higher brightness will do is increase visibility immediately in front of you, allowing you to better see items, including collectibles.
This screenshot shows what the brightness is like if you turn it down to the recommended setting (more or less, as your barely visible is different than my barely visible, but mine is pretty far down).
This screenshot shows the exact same scene (starting point for 3:00am) with brightness maxed.
Map
This map is taken from in-game, from the evidence wall under Findings. As the forest remains the same during each hour, this map will always be accurate.
Avoiding the Children
Wick wouldn’t be a survival game without some sort of challenge, now would it? The midnight hour starts off easy enough with only one child (Tim), but as you advance through each new hour, you’re introduced to a new child, as well as the one from the previous hour.
Tim is the first, and easiest to avoid, child. Wearing a creepy permanent smile mask, he’ll look at you for a second, and then take off chasing you. He’ll usually fall from a tree in front of you, but occasionally will fall behind you or to the side. To avoid him, run away from him, that’s it. Keep running until the music calms down, and that’s your cue that Tim has given up.
If he appears in front of you, turn around and run as straight as possible. He should give up before you run out of stamina.
Lillian is a floating child. She levitates above the ground, and you’ll know she’s close when you hear crying. If your vision turns to black and white, she’s actively after you. Her attack distance is much bigger than Tim, and you should turn around and run as soon as you catch a glimpse of her. She also teleports, and she can teleport you at random. A face only a mother could love.
Benjamin is the fat, sleeping child. You’ll know he’s nearby when you hear snoring. If you get too close to him, he’ll wake up and start chasing you, and he’s very fast. Your best bet is to drop your candle and take off running, as he seems attracted to the light. If he catches you, he’ll punch you and launch you away from him, or he’ll break your neck. Either way, you’re done for.
Tom is similar to Tim, and also wears a mask. He usually appears at the side of your screen and will pop into view. He’ll tilt his upper body to stare at you, and what you need to do is not look at him. If you look at him for more than a couple of seconds, he’ll attack. Look straight up or look at your feet. You can either stand in place until the music calms, or run while looking away.
You won’t see Caleb until he’s after you. You’ll hear rumbling underground, and you’ll see the ground shaking. If the trail gets too close to you, Caleb will emerge and attack. As usual, run away, and run in the opposite direction of the trail until the music calms down.
Collectibles
For each hour of survival, you’ll have three items to collect. Collectibles are unique to the hour of play; you’ll find the bunny during the midnight hour, but you won’t find it at 1:00am.
Knife – Next to the campire a short distance from the fireplace
Bunny – Sitting on top of the well
Mask – On the fireplace
Skull – On a large rock almost immediately to the upper right of the spawn point
Cross – Foot of the water tower
Leg brace? – Under the bridge
Mask – On a brown tree almost right next to the path, a bit away from the fireplace
Bible – On a brick near the fireplace
Bucket – On top of the bridge against the side
Trophy – At the bottom of the sign that says Camp
Baby rattle – On the first seat in the school bus
Shovel – At the graveyard
Gas mask – At the water tower
Lantern – Inside the cabin
Shoe – On the bridge
No collectibles during this hour.
