Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 Guide

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 achievement guide for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 achievement guide

Overview

A guide to get all achievements, including a walkthrough with all pick ups and an overview of all playable heroes.

What? (Introduction)

Welcome back to the Ultimate Alliance.
MUA2 continues the X-Men Legends series in good and bad ways. The graphics and gameplay are definitally improved, but the hero progression is a major step back. The change from Ultimates to Fusions is a good decision since now you actually control them, but there is no choice anymore in the hero powers. You simply upgrade every move and boost, until you hit max… Like written in the previous guide: compared to MUA and Legends, the powers system is a corridor shooter after the open world settings from the last games.
Sorry that it took so long after the first guide, but the Diablo anniversary is only available in the month of January and the cow pet is just awesome! Then RE7 got released and now Northgard is available in early access, so i thought “before Turok 2 gets re-released”…

Wait, what?!? (Information)

Right, achievement guide!
We’re changing some things compared to the guide for MUA, since there is a lot more stuff to collect. We start with an overview of all available heroes (only heroic deed requirements this time), followed by a walkthrough with all collectibles you can find during the main game and all special conversations. Next comes a list of all achievements that can (and usually will) be collected over several playthrough’s and right after that a list for every collectible in the game, so you can easily compare them with your stats page and search&find them faster. After those, you find all trivia questions and their answer’s and last, but not least a list of known bugs. We finish today’s menu with the credits, as usual.

Saving is not an issue here, since the SAP’s are gone and checkpoints are introduced. Now you swap your team/save the game on the go, just open the pause menu. The checkpoints even work during some boss fights, but nobody should rely only on that…

Who? (Characters)

This time it doesn’t matter what the best powers are, since all playable heroes and villains only have one power for each button and you upgrade everything anyway. Sure, it is still somehow strategic which powers and abilities you uprade first, but in the end all powers are upgraded and until then the game is easy even on Super-Heroic (Hard), as long as you have a balanced team. Since the characters are even more generic than in MUA, what matters now are the 3 team-boosts you pick and if your tank is any good. To make achievement hunting easy pick Jhonny Storm, Juggernaut or Wolverine as tank and 3 other heroes for the different Fusions (Clearing, Targeted, Guided).

(almost) Any team works, even on Legendary, as long as its balanced and the boosts are kept up2date. More on my own team for this guide in the intro of the actual walkthrough.

(P) and (A) indicate to what side some of the Heroes/Villains belong, since their 2nd costume (which you unlock with the “Defeat X amount of foes” Deeds) can ONLY be done in a Pro or Anti game, or after finishing both Pro- and Anti-Reg on Legendary. Heroes from Pro-Reg CAN’T unlock that Deed in an Anti-Reg game, so try to keep that in mind before you start a new game and choose the other side! First play some SIM disk missions and unlock those, before starting again! Neutral folks don’t show that and can tackle the Deeds in any game, after finishing Act 1.

At the Power of Two achievement is a checklist for all deeds.

Where? (Walkthrough)

Some important things to keep in mind, before we start:

The symbols I use during the walkthrough:
(+) indicates a Body/Focus/Strike/Teamwork Upgrade
(A) indicates an Audio Log
(B) indicates a (Team) Boost
(C) indicates a Concept Art Bundle
(D) indicates a Dossier
(G) indicates a Gamma Regulator
(M) indicates a M’Krann Fragment
(P) indicates a Power Pip
(R) indicates an Asgardian Rune
(S) indicates a Simulator Disc
(*) indicates an objective, that needs to be fullfilled for the “Seek and Destroy” achievement
(#) indicates a chance to get an achievement
(Hero)(Hero) indicates a special conversation, where you need to controll the hero on the left and talk to the one on the right

There are 4 different difficulty settings:
Casual = Easy
1: Heroes don’t die, since… 2: there are no health orbs and 3: autospend of power points cannot be turned off.
Heroic = Normal
1: Heroes can die, 2: there are health orbs dropped by enemies/crates and 3: you can turn off autospending of power points.
Super-Heroic = Hard
1: Heroes can die, 2: there are health orbs, while 3: you can turn off autospend of power points AND 4: enemies have more health.
Legendary = Hard…er
1: Heroes will die, 2: there are luckily still health orbs, while 3: enemies have more health AND 4: deal more damage to your heroes, BUT 5: Heroes start at level 30, even with a “fresh” game.

There are no achievements only available on Casual or even Heroic, so immediately start on Super-Heroic! This time, there is no way around 3 play through’s, since both sides (Pro- and Anti-Reg) provide their own boosts on Legendary, which only unlocks after 1 playthrough on Heroic or Super-Heroic.
Achievements and pick ups, that appear AFTER you chose Pro- or Anti-Registration (at the end of Act 1) can only be grabbed during a playthrough with the same choice! So for example: if you chose Pro-Reg (…pfff ^^), make sure you pick up everything and get all achievements (looking at special conversations), before starting a new game with Anti-Reg. (basically the “i forgot to pick up Mysterio’s sim disc…” situation from MUA1)
For any other achievement you can use the mission replays in the HQ’s, if you missed any.

Just like in MUA, rolling (double-tab the block button) is much faster than walking and even flying! Especially on the third play through, Act 1 and 3 have many areas without any collectibles left, so feel free to rush through the areas.
This time having 1 hero in your team is not possible. You should focus during your first playthrough on getting to know each hero by unlocking all alternative costumes (if available), finishing all heroic deeds and performing all fusions with all characters.
Try to pick up collectibles WITHOUT reading a guide (hear me out…)! Like that you get to know the maps and heroes to prepare for your Legendary run and since you get another chance to pick up everything again anyway, it doesn’t matter for now…

My boosts for any playthrough:
Draining III: Absorb 20% of melee Dmg as Stamina -> found in Faceoff
Infinity Formula: +20% Stamina Regen -> one of Nick Fury’s deeds
Power Up IV: +20% Dmg with Powers -> found in Hold the Line
or
Liberty: +20% Power Dmg -> one of Nick Fury’s deeds
or
Wade’s Fav: +10 to all Attributes -> Finish the game on Legendary
Of course, in your first run they are not available at the start and 2 even drop only AFTER you complete the story once… But their basic versions (Draining I | Focused I | Power Up I) can be aquired early, so there should be no problem.

My team is usually led by Human Torch as tank (= hero i control through the game), since his Flamethrower power is not only the best boss killer (imo), but also great against any other type of enemy, be it a single one or a group. It’s also great to break any boxes. Together with the dodge button (which cancels flamethrower and helps with conserving stamina) and the boosts up there, i’m literally rolling through Legendary usually without any real resistance, appart from some tougher bosses.
The rest of the team includes Jean Grey (with her alternative costume, for the close-up’s at conversations =P), Nick Fury (cause spamming his Plasma Volt attack is a great group killer) and Wolverine (selecting him gives all 3 types of Fusions in this team). Until Jean and Nick are unlocked, i usually use Spidey and Cable to still have all 3 Fusion types for Wolverine.
You could swap out other heroes for the Fusions, but this guide was made on Legendary with a fresh start, meaning no boosts at first and this team still had no problem getting all achievements.

TL;DR let’s start!

(#001) A House Divided – Defend your leaders.
(#022) If You’re Not With Us – Choose a side.
(#017) Freedom Isn’t Free – Raid a hideout.
(#004) All Options on the Table – Defend a convoy.
(#016) Fallen Star – Ambush your opponents.
(#011) Defending Our Way of Life – Rescue a hideout
(#024) Iron and Blood – Fight back an ambush
(#018) Grave and Growing – Free a country
(#002) A More Perfect Union – Finish what you started

Story related achievements, cannot be missed if you play both sides.

(#021) I’m With Iron Man – Defeat all Act II and III missions as a Pro-Registration team
(#020) I’m With Captain America – Defeat all Act II and III missions as an Anti-Registration team.

The achievement descriptions are straight-forward here: choose a side and finish the game.

(#027) Legendary Schism – Defeat all Act I missions on Legendary Difficulty.
(#028) Legendary War – Defeat all Act II missions on Legendary Difficulty.
(#026) Legendary Alliance – Defeat all Act III missions on Legendary Difficulty.

Legendary difficulty unlocks once you finish a game on Heroic or Super-Heroic.
IMPORTANT: This is not MUA1, where you choose at the start of a new game, if you want to take over stats from a previous game! If you want to start a new game with current stats (and believe me: you want to!), make sure you save in the Wakanda HQ after the credits and choose a new game in the review computer there.

(#023) Immortal Heroics – Defeat 25 maps on Super Heroic or Legendary Difficulty without revival or map reload.

That achievement also exists for the boss fights, only this here counts for whole maps. Shouldn’t be too difficult on Super-Heroic. The stats screen in the start menu is your friend here, since it tells you at every map, if you completed this task.

(#037) Rookie Squad – Complete a map in Co-Op.
(#014) Experienced Allies – Complete 8 maps in Co-Op.
(#010) Decorated Veterans – Complete 24 maps in Co-Op.

Just like in MUA1, maps are areas of the game, that are separated by a loading screens and (also just like in MUA1) you can “cheat” here, by simply replaying any HQ map (who says you have to complete DIFFERENT maps? =). So just load any finished HQ and leave and enter, until the achievements pop up. But also here (unlike in MUA1) you can check which maps you cleared in co-op in the pause menu under “Stats – Map”, if you use the “legit” way.

(#038) Seek and Destroy – Complete all optional mission objectives.

There are 5 optional objectives hidden in different missions. You find their descriptions in the walk through.
Latveria: Ascension | Reactors
New York City: Factory Floors
Washington D.C.: Capitol Offense
Wakanda: Tribal City

(#048) Uncontained Aggression – You or other players on your team must destroy 250 health containers.

Health containers are simply crates that drop health orbs when smashed. This is one of the easiest achievements, if you simply destroy everything in the game.

(#049) Undefeated Heroes – Defeat 12 mission bosses on Super Heroic or Legendary Difficulty without revival or map reload.
– The Tinkerer (Act 1 – Reactors)
– von Bardas (Act 1 – All Hands on Deck)
– Titanium Man (Act 1 – Hallowed Ground)
– Cable / Bishop (Act 2 – White Star Base)
– Goliath / Yellowjacket (Act 2 – Convoy Strike)
– Green Goblin and(!) Venom (Act 3 – Off the Leash)
– Whirlwind and(!) Diamondback and(!) Moonstone (Act 3 – Hold the Line)
– Green Goblin and(!) Venom (Act 3 – Panther’s Lair)
– Nanite Nick Fury (Act 3 – Towering Rage)

Sadly, you can’t just kill the same boss over and over, but luckily this can be done over multiple play throughs. It even works in the simulator missions. If a hero goes down, don’t revive her/him! You also CAN’T select restart in the pause menu!
Like with almost all achievements, you can track the progress in the start menu on the stats – map’s screen.

(#006) Back in Action – Perform 10 revivals.

Reviving means to ressurect a downed hero. When a fusion hits 100%+ (when the counter of enemies is on 12/12 for example), it drops a health token. Those are needed for a revive.

(#044) Tactical Training – Perform all 5 recommended training Fusions in Latveria.
– Any combination
– Spider-Man & Wolverine
– Iron Man & Wolverine
– Captain America & Wolverine

During the Prologue, you will be asked to perform Fusions. Do that and you’re good. Can be finished with several play-through’s.

(#019) Heroes Unite – Perform 10 Fusions with another player controlled hero in a Coop game.

There’s not much to explain here… Works on- and offline and if alone, you need at least 1 controller and the second hero can be controlled with the keyboard.

(#050) United We Stand – Earn 20 high scores for each type of Fusion: Targeted, Guided, and Clearing.

High scores are achieved, when the Fusion counter hits the maximum amount of enemies (for example 12/12) with Guided and Clearing Fusions. For Targeted Fusions it obviously needs to be a boss and not some random enemy…

(#036) Powers of Two – Perform all Fusions by combining every available pairing of 24 heroes.

A total of 276 Fusions is hard to keep track of, so I updated Gamefaqs’ Dustin1280 checklist of all playable characters. Mark the spots in an editor (paint(dot)net or something) and at the end of your first play through, if you still got some left start one of the SIM missions to get them off the list quicker. Obviously this is also tracked under every hero in the stats menu, however it only shows the total amount of different Fusions, NOT which heroes u forgot…!

(#033) Old Friends – Have 10 special conversations between characters with a history while in an HQ map.

There are 65 special conversations when playing both sides of the war, spread across all HQ maps in the game.Choosing the same behaviour (aggressive / diplomatic / defensive) several times also unlocks more boosts (at 4 / 20 / 36 / 56 / 80). That means when you stick to one behaviour for a playthrough, you won’t unlock all boosts…
The best way to get all boosts in your first play through, is to talk to all available characters in the HQ’s (including special conversations) with the same behaviour like aggressive, then save&reload and do the same thing with diplomatic. Save&reload again and finish defensive. This can be done in every HQ and like that you should get all boosts in one play through.
No, it doesn’t work to just talk 65 times to Iron Man in the first HQ with the same behaviour… Once you choose any behaviour, this response changes into a normal conversation response (also the marker of the response changes, so you know during the conversation, which ones u already picked).

(#009) Costume Collector – Unlock 23 alternate costumes.

(Almost) Every character has an alternate costume, that is unlocked by killing 50 enemies. See the Powers of Two achievement further up for a checklist..

(#012) Distinguished Service – Collect 50 Team Boosts.
(#015) Extraordinary Heroism – Collect 125 Team Boosts.
(#003) Above and Beyond – Collect 200 Team Boosts.
(#029) Listening In – Collect 30 Audio Logs.
(#043) Superior Intel – Collect 125 Dossiers.
(#034) Potential Evidence – Collect 10 Concept Art Bundles in HQ maps.

The biggest headache you’ll get from the 200 teamboosts, but after you collected everything on Pro and Anti Legendary and finished all fusions&deeds (see Power of Two achievement for a checklist), you should have all collectibles.

Are we done? (part 2)

(#045) Trivia Buff – Correctly answer 15 Trivia questions.
(#047) Trivia Team-Up – Score 30 Trivia Fusions.
(#046) Trivia Genius – Earn all Trivia rewards.

The Trivia Rewards are the three little icons in the bottom right of the screen at each question. To earn all available rewards from a question, it has to be answered correctly, quickly AND with a fusion. A Trivia Fusion occurs when two or more people in co-op answer a trivia question correctly at roughly the same time.
The easiest and fastest way is to use 2 controllers alone and to have the list open on a portable device. While all 4 answers are shown, a timer of ~4-5 seconds runs down bnefore the actual timer (for Trivia Fusion) starts. Check which of the 4 buttons is the answer and spam it on both controllers. Don’t forget to save before starting a round in an HQ!

(#039) Sim Amateur – Earn 4 Bronze Medals from Simulator Missions.
(#041) Sim Expert – Earn 8 Silver Medals from Simulator Missions.
(#040) Sim Champion – Earn 12 Gold Medals from Simulator Missions.
(#042) Sim Team-Up – Earn Mission Succeeded on a Simulator Mission in Co-Op and return to the Simulator menu.

(#030) Melee Training – Complete all melee training goals listed on the Stats page.
– Remove 10 shields
– Throw 20 foes
– Perform 10 stun combos
– Perform 10 pop-up combos
– Perform 10 trip combos
– 20 strikes while foe is prone
– 20 strikes while grappling
– 20 air smashes

Works over several play through’s and in the Basic SIM mission.

(#035) Power Training – Complete all Power training goals listed on the Stats page.– 30 dashing power hits
– 50 projectile power hits
– 30 radial power hits
– 30 direct damage power hits
– 20 pulling power hits
– 20 buff powers used
– 20 debuff powers used

Again, this works over several play through’s and in Simulator missions. The goals are:

(#013) Every Trick in the Book – Complete all combat mastery goals listed on the Stats page.
– 20 foes hit by car explosions
– Chain reaction of 5 explosions
– 20 robots destroyed by own grenades
– Knock down 5 foes with 1 object
– 20 melee-to-power chains
– 20 hits with fire, cold, and electricity
– 50 foes thrown from high places

20 robots can appear in the first and second Heavy Metal SIM mission, get for one the health low and then hold the button for fusion but don’t fire it yet. This freezes the AI heroes so the robot can fire a grenade at you and you throuw it back… 20 times. For the 5 foes – 1 object goal start Washington DC – Capitol Offense and take a car to the crashed helicopter, but clear out the mines first! For the 20 hits with 3 elemental powers equip the highest fire, ice and electricity boosts, then melee enemies away in the fbasic SIM training.

(#051) Old Foes – Defeat “Overload” with the X-Men

For people who are not that familiar with the X-Men, the available heroes and villains are:
Cable / Gambit / Wolverine / Iceman / Jean Grey / Juggernaut / Magneto / Psylocke / Storm

(#052) Perfect Balance – Defeat 75 foes in “Balance.”

I don’t think this requires much explanation, but to be safe finish this on Super-Heroic.

(#053) Blows Up Real Nice – Throw all the proximity mines in “Balance.”

Yeah, this means they can’t explode before you picked them up. Some of them did explode in my hand, so i think throwing isn’t necessary, as long as they don’t explode on the ground!

(#054) No One Left Behind – Complete “Insidious Alliance” with all four heroes alive.

Heroes CAN die in this mission, as long as everybody is alive and kicking once the mission is completed! Remember to get high score Fusions for those precious health tokens!

(#055) Blitz – Defeat 2 foes within 10 seconds in “Insidious Alliance.”

Not much to say here either. An easy tactic is to lower the health of 2 enemies to ” almost dead” and use a strong attack.

(#056) Walk It Off – Progress through “Insidious Alliance” without breaking any Health Containers.

DON’T destroy the boxes and you’re good. It popped up right after the start of the last wave.

What’s this? (Collectibles)

This time, I won’t talk extensively about boosts that certain heroes offer. You find all Hero related info in the section of that guide further up. No, here i talk about the sh*tload of stuff you need to pick up to get the related achievements.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance has 142 collectibles “hidden” in the story levels and the stats screen shows 215 when including concept art, load screens and cinematics (not counting the gear dropped by bosses). Where MUA2 lacks in freedom of hero powers, it (sort of) makes up in collectibles! There are 238 Boosts, 171 Dossiers, 38 Audio Logs, 37 Upgrade tokens, 35 Movies, 10 Asgardian Runes, 10 Gamma Regulators, 10 M’Kraan Fragments, 10 Power Pips and “only” 12 Sim Discs in the game. That makes 549 single entries in the stats page… Now is maybe a good moment to point out, why i don’t call this guide a “quick achievement guide”. Actually it’s because of the fusions and the hero deeds you have to perform, since that took me the most time, but you get my point.

You get all this (and more) during the story levels, while choosing different behaviours during conversations, from dead bosses and by completing mission achievements. Everything is listed as it appears in the game stat lists and i numbered them, so you can easily find them back in the walk through.

WTF?!? (Known bugs)

There were no game breaking bug’s encountered and subsequently hurt during the creation of this guide.

The rare crash where everything freezes, incl. windows (o.0) did happen, but nothing really annoying on that end.

As with the 360 version from 2009, you’ll encounter a very annoying stats page “bug”:
The stats pages for HQ’s seem to be frozen in the state that you left them the first time around.
As example: In HQ Stark 2 i forgot to pick one item up (Audio Log) and in Stark 3 the same (also Audio Log), but i got them later via Simulator Mission. The stats page still tells me they’re missing, which drives me NUTS. However, the Simulator Mission computer says i picked up everything on both maps. So trust in the computer and not the stats page!

Still here? (Credits)
