Overview
This guide will explain indepth how to combo with Quan, Vortex setups and zoning options.
General info about his footsies
Quan’s ←2 is one of the best overheads in the game, it can be charged up to do 4% more damge and hard knockdown, this is very useful to punish opoonents that do a delayed wake-up for example.
His ←1 is also a good ranged sword attack that goes more into the air, because it is faster then ←2 i would recommend to sometimes use this as a match starter instead.
←3 is a low kick with very low range, but combos into trance with very good damage by doing ←324,4,Trance
→3 in Warlock is a very usefull tool because you can kick the opponent from full screen distance, also can be used as a juggle to increase damage from a ex skull or ex rune.
Why would you pick Warlock over summoner or sorcerer
The biggest pro of Warlock is definitely his ex ↓→1 because it is the only armorable wakeup that any quan has and you can get a full combo out of it. The none ex version is still the best wake-up any quan has but isn’t comboable, but it can get you out of the cornor so that is a plus again.
Also his ex ↓→3 gives him a true Vortex, so you have a 50/50 chance to just full combo the opponent again, this will be explain more indepth later in the guide.
Bread and Butter combos
If you haven’t played quan that much before, this is the part where things get interesting and many of your time into practice.
Overhead-starter:
←2x←→3,→2122,→14x↓→4 26% and creates full screen distance
←2x←→3,→2122,→3 22% places the opponent in ←3 range
←2x←→3,→2122,→14xEX↓→4 26% one bar, starts the Vortex.
Njp,←12x←→3,→2122,ender of your choice, setups from aboth still count ~26%
Low-starter:
←324,4x←→3,→2122,→2122,RC14x↓→4 34% and creates full screen distance
←324x,4←→3,→2122,RC14xEX↓→4 34% one bar, starts the Vortex.
EX↓→1,←2x←→3,→2122,RC14x↓→4 28% one bar, can be done as wakeup, meter burn at the end starts Vortex.
General gameplan
So now that you know your footsies and flashy combos, what you gonna do with them ? This will be explained in this section of the guide.
First of all you should know that Quan has INSANE zoning with his runes and espacially the ability to meter burn them, also his skull and air skull and into this very well. It is often said that Quan is the best zoner in the entire game so it is definitely an option to use your setup with the teleport grab to put the enemy full screen away and start using your runes and skulls to keep the opponent away and nuke them to death.
However i think warlock is his least zone heavy variation, it is much more based about rushing in and get the Vortex startet, the good mix of Both these tactics is what will make you win the game when playin Quan as Warlock.
A good thing about this is that Quan doesn’t need any meter to do combo damage that at least hurts and so he can spend his meter on doing the Vortex setup or his runes, it should also be clear that zoning is way more safe but Vortex (if it works) is more rewarding/way more damage for the meter.
The Vortex
So finally we come to the most interesting part of the Guide: The Vortex.
If you aren’t that familiar and don’t know what that means (you probably shouldn’t be reading this by that point anyways, but if so i hope you understand anything), a Vortex means that at the end of your combo you put your opponent into a neutral standing situation with you having a high frame advantage, best example of this in mkx would be the enhanced throw.
The reason why you should do that is because it leaves your opponent in a 50/50 situation, they can either block low, or high. You will start a new combo with an overhead or low, if they blocked it you should hope not to get punished, if you hit you can just full combo them again, if your opponent keeps guessing wrong they will be put into an infinite circle of damage until you won the match.
To use this technik use the enhanced portal grab, like explained in the bnb combo section of this guide, after that do a low or overhead starter into full combo again and see what happens. Also a possibility is to do a throw, the opponent will probably not be able to react to that so it is confirmed damage, but it will also end your vortex. WARNING: the throw option was taken away from quan in the Jason patch but will be patched in again with the predator patch that is already out on console. Some last words
First of all thanks for your patience and good luck with the new learned stuff.
Pls leave me some feedback how you liked this guide and if it was useful.
Also one little addition to the BnB combos, it is very possible that you can get way more damage, but i wanted to show combos that are easy to learn and more beginner friendly, especially the run cancels and jump punches can be pretty hard with online lag.
Will do a sorcerer guide in the near future so stay tuned 🙂
