Overview
This guide is for share my well tried tactics with you, and make it easier to obtain the Who Needs Tygan? achievement. 🙂
Difficulty
This achievement doesn’t request anything about the difficulty level.
I wanted to show how to get this achievement easily so I recorded the mission on rookie difficulty.
Video guide
I wrote tips into the video as annotations, and I would recommend you to use ’em, but also edited and put them here if you would prefer that way. 🙂
Preparations:
Allowed gears:
- You have to use the basic armors, primary weapons, secondary weapons (such as: gremlins, pistols, grenade launchers, swords, Psi Amps)
- Plasma grenades, and medkits are allowed. Resistance armor from the dlc is unsure, not like it would matter about anything. I didn’t risked it.
- Upgraded medkits and plasma grenades are ok aswell. Can be usefull if you want to bring a wounded soldier, though I wouldn’t recommend that, cause she/he will start the mission injured.
- Smoke, and Flashbang should be OK too, but I think these aren’t so useful in here.
- Probably none of the dlc item count as “conventional gear”. I couldn’t test them one by one, but looks like they prevent you from getting the achievement.
Classes:
- Normal weapons won’t cause big damage, so I would recommend you to bring as many Psi soldier as you can. And use your regular shots mostly to force the aliens avatars to move, to another location, but be carefull with that, cause you won’t know where he will go.
- A full scout ranger is very helpful, just don’t let her/him lose the concealment until the final stage.
- With the Plasma grenades, grenadiers can be handy, however grenades sometimes act weird on the last stage.
- One sniper with squadsight should be enough, for force the avatars to move in your turn.
- I think specialists aren’t so useful under this circumstances than other times.
Weapon upgrades:
- You can use any weapon upgrade (“basic”, advanced, superior).
- I would recommend as many superior repeaters as you can, but never rely on them. I didn’t have so much luck with theese. 🙁
- Sometimes stocks can save you too, and also very useful, if the enemy’s avatar is in a really bad spot.
Personal Combat stims:
- Just as the weapon upgrades, you can use any PCS (“basic”, advanced, superior).
- Since your gears are so weak, may these won’t be gamechangers, anyway I would recommend you to use mostly the perceptions as always.
Tactics:
early/mid game:
- The Commander’s Avatar is obviously the most useful unit. On the easiest difficulty, with his quick regeneration ability, almost harder to die with him than not, so I would recommend you to focus on keep your other soldiers on full health from a relative safe distance, and use the Avatar bravely.
- The avatars abilities are very powerfull, and only limit of the uses is the cooldown, so use ’em often.
- The mind controll is the most powerfull ability with a guaranteed chance on anybody (organic), this was the key of my tactic, so use it if you can. Try to aim the enemies with the most health left and tank the damage with them.
- The psi operatives Inspire ability is a very powerfull combo with the avatar, if he is within range, still try to keep em in a safe distance from the enemies, you won’t really need it before the final stage.
- Watch out for the codexes, with their teleport ability they can break your concealment, which is one of the worst things on the early section of the mission.
- If you don’t have any mind controlled unit, may just wait for the cooldowns, before start searching for other enemies.
Endgame (Fight against the Avatars):
- It is hard to decide if you should focus the shots on the avatar, or the other aliens, but if you have a mind controlled unit, you can use him as a bait to save your soldiers from being shot. Best would be if you could lure them towards the Mind controlled unit, and use a dimensional rift on them, but don’t take too much risk for that.
- If an avatar is very low on HP may worth to finish him as soon as possible, otherwise they will regenerate themselves. But still prioritize the soldiers health, because on Rookie difficulty Avatars don’t even have any armor.
- Alway try to use the Psi operative’s abilities if you can, because these are very powerful. (For example: Null lance on the Avatar with that huge damage, Stasis on a hostile unit to prevent them from attacking you, Inspire on your Avatar…)
- Don’t play too aggressively, never leave anybody uncovered for get a hit.
- Saving the game and loading back in critical moments probably ok, however I didn’t tried, so I can’t say it for sure.
Good Luck Commander!
Really hope this guide helped you.
And sorry for the misspellings… 🙂
