Here I will teach you a few tips and tricks, give you some information about the game, and explain a lot of things. If you don’t like reading, then this guide might not be the right one for you after all. This is Survival For Dummies.

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my ultimate survival guide, titled “Survival For Dummies”! In this guide I will teach you some tips, tricks, give information, help and much more to improve your experience with the game and your ability to play it.

Let’s start off with an introduction and a few questions, shall we?

What is No More Room In Hell?
“No More Room In Hell is the ultimate, ruthless and unforgiving co-operative zombie survival experience on the Source Engine, delivering award winning survival horror gameplay with dozens of weapons and multiple game modes.” – No More Room In Hell Team

No More Room In Hell is an amazing zombie survival game built on the Source Engine with many extra touches that adds more realism and improves the player’s gameplay experience with the game. Decide yourself whether you want to be a lone wolf and play solo, or join up with a few mates on an online server. Either survive hordes of enemy zombies while gathering supplies, barricade entrances and all those things you have to do in order to survive, while waiting for extraction. You can also play objective maps where you have to get from one place to another and do lots of fun and intense tasks in order to be extracted to safety.

Awesome! Is it free?
Yeah! The game is entirely free-to-play, and you can download it on their website www.nmrih.com or search for it in the Steam Store, as it has been Greenlit on Steam Greenlight! The mod requires no other game in order to run.

Only requirements is a Steam Account and 5 gigabytes of free hard disk space!

Huge thanks to other No More Room In Hell guide creators, Wiki users, and of course the No More Room In Hell Development Team!

Gamemodes

Now let’s talk about the different gamemodes in the game!

Objective
Objective mode focuses on banding a group of survivors together, who must complete a series of predetermined tasks in order to complete the map they’re in. Unlike in other zombie mods and games, No More Room In Hell uses an Objective Branching system which allows the map to randomy decide which objective the survivors must complete before they move on into the next area.

This means that in every new round, the tasks that the survivors must accomplish, may change, so they have to be vigilant and cautious. The ultimate goal is to reach the extraction zone before time runs out. Generally, Objective maps range from small and linear maps, to large and complex maps.

Survival
Survival mode focuses on two things: Area Defense and Survival.

The National Guard designated certain areas as “safe zones” for survivor groups to regroup at and wait for extraction. Unbeknownst to the survivors though, the “safe zones” are actually being used as zombie bait to lure the massive undead horde away from the major metropolitan areas, to buy the National Guard some time to evacuate the remaining populace (as well as giving them breathing space after constant battles with the undead).

Players must defend predefined areas (the loading screen and the compass will show where they are) while simultaneously attempting to stay alive. These predefined areas (referred in-game as “Zones”) may differ across each map but generally, they’re relatively safe to return to and regroup.

Zombies will enter the map through a wave system. The longer you survive, the more zombies you must face down (25 zombies in wave one vs 210 zombies in wave two) and runners/children will start to make a more common appearance.

Realism Mode
This is an optional mode that server admins can switch on or off. By switching sv_realism to 1, the zombies can now be taken out with just one headshot. However, body shots won’t affect them at all. In addition, the checkpoint spawning system is switched off. This means you have to be extremely careful with your one sole life! Realism Mode is not a gamemode like Objective and Survival, but just an option that server admins can switch on or off.

Surviving

Survival is a must in No More Room In Hell, just like in real life as well. It doesn’t matter whether you choose the Survival or Objective gamemode, surviving is still top one priority. But in No More Room In Hell, it’s extra difficult, more intense and much more fun.

In Survival mode you will have to defend zones from hordes of zombies, coming in one wave after another. If the zone get’s destroyed (0% health left, starts with 100% at default), the players have failed, and the round will end, resulting in a restart of the map. But while defending the zones, they also have to stay alive. Players are able to unlock respawn tokens, but in Realism Mode there is no respawning.

Even in Objective maps, survival is top one priority. Of course you won’t be able to complete tasks while running around as an un-controllable player zombie. Focus on the survival and take your time with the tasks if needed. Don’t be scared of searching the map for supplies such as bandages, first-aid kits and pills. They’re gonna be needed.

There are many tips and tricks that makes it easier to survive; I’ll give you a few:

  • Don’t get too close to zombies – they’ll just grab you, bite you, occasionally resulting in being infected. Charge up your weapon (hold left mouse button until it is fully charged), quickly go in, slam a zombie on the head, then back off, repeat.
  • Don’t waste all of your ammo immediately. If possible, try to stick with the melee weapons in the early waves. Zombies are easy to kill in the first waves, and there won’t be that many of them. There’s no runners and children zombies in the first waves either. Save the ammo for the harder rounds or if you’re surrounded.
  • If you’ve decided to stick to one zone or one spot and defend that, try to barricade the entrances. To barricade you need a hammer and some planks. When you have both, just equip the hammer, right-click, and then find a door you can barricade. But don’t barricade the wrong doors! You might need to get in and out to gather supplies in between waves. If you just barricade the top plank on a door, you will be able to crouch under. If you barricade the bottom one, you’ll be able to crouch-jump over it.
  • Supply Drops will eventually arrive and be dropped by a helicopter. Those supply drops contain many different weapons, tools and ammunation that you will need. Try to get it all back to your spot without getting killed on the way.
  • If there are no supply drops present in the map, you can also fire a flare up in the sky, using a flare gun to call for a crate.

Attacking

There are many good tricks to safely kill zombies without getting bitten or hurt.

  • Learn the range of your weapon. Always keep a safe distance away from the zombies so they won’t be able to grab you or hit you. Charge up your weapon, get kinda close, hit the zombie, and then quickly backstep away so it won’t be able to hit you. Usually, fully charged hit to the head will usually kill it – but it depends on the weapon you’re using.
  • Shove the zombies away if you get too close. If a zombie gets a little too close to you, push it away (default button is V) so it will get pushed away to a safe distance. While it’s being pushed, you have just enough time to fully charge your weapon and bash its head in for the kill.
  • Don’t waste all your ammo. Try to stick to your melee weapons instead of using all the ammo in your firearm straight away. Save the ammo for the runners, player zombies and for the last waves.
  • Most people think you have to shoot runners in order to safely kill them. False. When they get just close enough, shove them away (default button is still V), charge your weapon and hit it in the head. If it survives the first hit, just repeat the sequence.
  • In order to kill player zombies easily, just do the same thing as you did with the runner zombies. They’re pretty much the same; though the sequence is kinda risky.
  • In order to easily kill child zombies, just push them away (once again, default button is V) and then charge up your weapon and bash their head in. Child zombies die from one fully charged hit to the head.

Defending

Defending is a huge part of the Survival gamemode. While not only having to survive, you also have to defend the predetermined zones.

Many things will help you defend the zones. I’ll give some tips down below:

  • Store all your supplies in one room. Whenever you find some items, bring them all to that room and store them there. (If you’re playing on a map where you defend a two-story house, the best idea is to store the supplies upstairs next to a zone, if there is one there.
  • Barricade entrances! Just find a hammer and some planks. Hammers should be located in mainly workshops, but also other places. Planks are usually located in either workshops or next to entrances. When you found both items, equip the hammer, right-click and then choose one of the barricade options on an entrance. But make sure to not block every entrance so you can’t get out again.
  • Wait for supply drops! Occasionally a helicopter will fly by and drop a huge crate with lots of supplies. The supply drop contains weapons, tools, ammunation and first-aid things.
  • Stick in groups. There’s usually more than one zone you have to defend, and they’re all located different places. You don’t necessarily have to defend them all – you can just stick to one and defend that – but if you do stick to one, it’s easier for you to be surrounded and overrun.
  • Stick to your group. Don’t run somewhere all alone unless the place is cleared from zombies or you’re waiting for a new round to begin. You might just get overrun, completely destroyed from behind by a zombie. I hope you don’t have a dirty mind…
  • Don’t get other people stuck! Please, for the love of God, don’t block any doors, entrances, halls, rooms or anything! There’s nothing worse than getting overrun by zombies because you couldn’t backstep away.

Items

Firearms
No More Room in Hell has a wide selection of firearms from across all spectrums.

In order to use a firearm, you have to first find the gun, and pick up (default key is E). However, you can’t pick up another gun which is identical to the one you already have equipped (You can’t carry two Beretta M9s for example). After that, you need to check if it has ammo, by holding down your reload key (default R). If there’s no ammo, press your reload key if you have some extra rounds for it. In order to fire the actual gun, press your primary attack key (default MOUSE1). In order to go into Ironsight mode, press your secondary fire key (default MOUSE2).

  • If the zombies are getting too close to you, you can shove them off with your bash key (default V). This will give you some breathing room. This uses stamina, however!
  • Firearms are extremely lethal to zombies, if you aim for the head. In contrast, they won’t do much if you aim for their kneecaps or arms.
  • Firearm damage is based on the ammo type the gun is using, a gun using .22LR rounds won’t be as effective as a gun using .308 rounds.
  • In order to switch guns, hold down your inventory key (default 1) and mouse over to your desired weapon. If you want to drop a weapon, either hit H or hold down your inventory key and right click on the desired weapon you want to drop.
  • Some guns are heavier than others and can take up more space in your inventory.
  • By default, ironsights are togglable. This means you can just simply press your secondary attack key once to enable them, and click again to disable them. For users who want their ironsights to be more like contemporary shooters, they can use this command in the console. (cl_stickyironsight 0)

Skillshot Mode
Some firearms will allow you to enter a ‘focused’ aiming mode, which will double your damage and give you a 75% chance to knock a zombie back. To activate this mode, simply enter IronSights mode and stand still for 3 seconds. If done correctly, your vision will have a sanguine tint and a Depth of Field effect, along with your character holding his/her breath.

Ammo
Each gun in No More Room in Hell uses a different ammo type. For example, you can’t load a Sako 85 with .9mm rounds! They are represent as different ammo boxes of various sizes and shapes. In order to drop ammo, hold down your ammo inventory key (default 2) and mouse over to your desired ammo and click on the ammo.

  • Ammo can be hard to find, so be accurate and only take shots you really need to take!

Melee
No More Room in Hell contains many melee weapons that are accessible to you, the player.

Unlike the firearms, you start out with your fists, which can be used as a means to attack zombies or break down various items in a level you’re in. However, they predictably don’t do much damage to zombies (punching undead flesh doesn’t do much if they can’t feel a thing) but you can still push them away (default V)!

Melees also have two sets of attacks, quick and charge. Quick attacks are accomplished by simply tapping your primary attack key. Charged attacks are accomplished by holding down your secondary attack key; the amount of time you spend charging multiplies the base attack damage your melee weapon has (max charge is 3.5 seconds, with a 55.8% damage bonus), though it drains your stamina pool.

Tools
Some melee weapons also double as tools. The barricade hammer and welder fall into this category. The welder can only be used on objectives that call for its usage (ie: fences that need to be unweld). To use the welder, hold down your secondary fire key and approach the desired objective. You know you’ve done it right if a progress bar appears on your screen! In contrast, the barricade hammer can be used to place boards up in any area (if the level has barricade board usage set up)! In order to use the barricade action, you must find a barricade board (they look like brown, narrow uneven boards). After that, press the secondary fire key. Areas in which you can place boards in are noted with transparent board icons.

Maglite
The maglite is your flashlight. It can dynamically illuminate the immediate area you’re in to yourself and other players in real time. You can use it as a normal melee weapon! In order to turn on the maglite, press your secondary fire key. You can also use the maglite in conjunction with one handed firearms, by pressing F.

Teamwork & Strategy

Teamwork is vital in No More Room In Hell. Playing solo is a hard thing to do. Working together with other players speeds up the map completion time, and makes everything easier. Talk with other players through the in-game voice communication or voicetalk, or simply type with them.

Voice

Voice communication is distanced based, players who are far away from you cannot hear you, and vice versa. You have to stay close to your teammates if you want to effectively communicate with them. If you and other players have the walkie talkie item equipped however, you can talk to them regardless of the distance they’re away from you.

  • Many new players don’t know chat degrades (gets quieter) with distance.

Text
The things described for voice chat applies to text chat as well; only difference is that even with a walkie talkie, you can’t communicate with far away players!

Voice Commands
No More Room in Hell also has a radial voice command menu for those who want to quickly bark out orders without stopping to type. This is distanced based too (default 3).

Infection & Death

Death
Death is an unfortunate and tragic event in most societies. If you die from a zombie (or friendly fire), you will be taken to spectator mode. Some maps may have checkpoints so if the survivors progress far enough, you can get a second chance and respawn. If you die again however, you head back to the spectator mode and you will remain there until the survivors either finish the map (by completing objectives or dying), or if they reach another checkpoint.

Infection
Infection is a slow death process that you can get if you’re swiped enough at or bitten by various zombies. If you’re infected, your vision starts to blur out and your breathing gets frantic. Eventually when you die, you will fall down to the ground dead and after a predetermined time, you will reanimate as a member of the undead. You can temporarily stop the infection though, if you use the Phalanx item. Phalanx (or pills for short) are represented as a small pill bottle item. They won’t last long however (3 minutes), so you have to make the best of your life before you succumb to your death!

  • (New in 1.05) The time it takes for you to become a zombie has been extended to two minutes.

Setting up a Hamachi Server

Now I will teach you how to make a private server for you and your friends, using the Hamachi program.

1) Download Hamachi (preferably from here [link]

2) Run Hamachi and click the power button to quickly and simply make a user

3) Click Network, then Create a new network… then choose an ID and a password for the Hamachi server. Confirm and create it

4) Now head into your Steam Library, right-click No More Room In Hell, click Properties, then Set Launch Options and paste in -console. Press Enter and then head in-game.

5) In-game, click Create Server, choose the server map and options. When you’re ready, click Start.

6) When you’re on the server, press the Escape button, and there will be a console (you can also see it in the main menu). Here’s what you have to paste into the server console:

  • sv_lan 0
  • heartbeat
  • changelevel nms/nmo_insertservernamehere

The server should now be ready.

7) Now, in order to make your friends join, they need to install Hamachi as well. When they’ve installed it, you need to give them the information of the Hamachi network you created (ID and password). They will press Network and then Join an existing network… They should be connected.

8) Now right-click the IP (numbers) you can see next to the power button you pressed earlier. Click the Copy IPv4 address button, and paste it to your friends.

9) Now, the last step is to make your friends enable the console you enabled as well. When they’ve done that, they need to paste in connect insertyourIPhere to join the server.

Server Commands

You can use these commands on listen servers as well as dedicated servers. Enter the command/cvar you want to use, and the value (if it requires one).

  • sv_votekick_timer 10
  • changelevel (changelevel_nms_northway)
Peacefuly change the map to another, and tell clients it’s changing

  • map (map nms_northway)
Force the server to cange the map to another. Used to reload configuration as it kicks all clients (Server Shutting Down)

  • kick (kick mario_time)
    Kicks a player right away
