Overview

Have you ever tried nmo_dodgeball? It is great team battle map with some strategy elements. You’ll need to understand the map well if you want to win. Hope this guide helps.

This guide will tell you how to win on nmo_dodgeball.

This guide is written for Dodgeball_v5 as of 2014/9/19.

  • Solo’d all offical nmo maps
  • Solo’d nms_northway 3 times
  • 2-man’d most official nms maps
  • 2-man’d nmo_sweden_v4
  • killed 1300+ zombies with just axe,not firing any round nor chainsaw on nms_favela (before map nerf)

all of those are done without cheat/infammo, in case you’re wondering.
so i think i can write some tips and tactics maybe? x)

Short guide for dummies

(Caution:you’ll need at least 1 leader to make this work)

  1. DO NOT buy ANY items unless solo
  2. Kill zombie with extreme force and fast as possible
  3. Don’t die, use meds often if it’s unlocked
  4. Respawn skilled mate asap when he/she is dead
  5. Ammo and meds are unlimited once they’re unlocked,use them

Basic rules

Players will be split into two teams.
Open some gates in the middle to spawn zombies, and kill them.
Killed zombies give gold to the team. Use them to buy weapons/ammo/etc.
Gold can also be used to upgrade zombies which disrupt enemy team.
If enemy team get 50 or more live zombies, your team gets 2gold/sec.
If all enemys in court dies, You win.

If you kill zombies that spawned from gate, the enemy gets 1 zombie at random place
near gates. ONLY these zombies get buffs from vending machine.
Zombies that sent from enemy team does NOT send zombies back to the enemy.

Good starting weapon. you should buy this after your first 2 kills. They are NOT considered as “blunt” NOR “blade”, so this thing has 0% chance to knock zombie over with quick attack. it also has very short range.
Machette

If you are planning some sort of cheese, this will be for you. If not, the axe is always better. Remember, you can kill runners with just one hit to the head with quick attack.
SV10

If you buy this on early wave, you will likely make your team lose. Too slow fire rate is making this gun unsuitable. If you have to use this, carefully line up zombie heads and aim. Also, it can one hit double health zombies, although way too slow.
(Don’t get me wrong, I <3 this under normal circumstances)
Fire axe

This will be your bread and butter on early to mid game. Hold the mouse button until your character brings up axe, wait for like 0.2sec, and that’s enough to kill normal shamblers, and somehow saves stamina. in case of runners / kids, quick attack as you sidestep to ensure kill.
S&W 686
25+5(ammo)
This is kinda tricky to use. You need to shoot it from hip to fire quickly, but you also need to penetrate 2 zombies for maximum DPS. Definitely not for everyone. It is ideal to counter explosive zombie rush, though.
Beretta M92F
35+5(ammo)
High fire rate and fast reload makes this gun good choice for the team without skilled melee person. Always use Double Tap for normal zombies. The weakness is: your ammo vanish fast, and mashing click is very tiresome 🙁
JAE700
45+5(ammo)
Are you super pro with this weapon ? Can you always kill 3 zombies with 1 round? no? then don’t buy this. Me? Certainly not! Jokes aside, slow fire rate and its weakness against runners/ kids/ zombie-hugs make this weapon unreliable. This gun only do 999 damage, 1 damage short to oneshot Double health zombies.

If you think you can do 2 round bursts constantly, this will be for you. It’s easier to handle than beretta for extended period of time. It’s rather costly to use for pre-CZ, so keep that in mind.
Chainsaw

The problem solver for survival maps. Incredible damage if you can use it properly. Sad thing is, enemy team can use explosive/infection cloud zombies to counter this, making this thing somewhat obsolete for this map. WARNING: It starts out with ZERO fuel, so you need to pay 115gold to use. Try not to use it without fuel, you need to hit hard 5 times.

It is good weapon. can kill 2 with 1 bullet, has 15+1 round magazine, fast firing rate while aiming, etc… Oh, did i mention the SLOW ASS reload, slower than the 686 when you compare for 6+ rounds? This weapon is sorta overrated.
CZ 858
100+60(ammo)
1 shot kill zombies, big magazine, fast reload if not depleted, handy single shot with fast fire rate…. this masterpiece have everything you need against horde. Comes with 120 rounds, which is well enough to shoot down 60 more zombies to buy ammo. You can even rush for this, completely turning the tide and making enemy team run for mommy.

Can only be spawned once per 10-ish seconds. You’ll need 2 of them at once to clear out considerable amount of zombies. You can also throw these at infected enemy players to hurt them, or to enemy cups to destroy them. be careful not to help them too much.

Creates green gas around the zombie, hurting everyone who is nearby. Has small chance of infection/bleeding. This effect can be quite deadly if zombies are stacked together. otherwise, the bleeding is quite frustrating more than infection, which you can stave off with pills for 3 minutes anyway.

Makes zombies transparent, and resistant to fire. While it can catch some unskilled people off guard, they are still visible enough so shooting their heads can’t be problematic. The resistance to fire is somewhat good if emeny team is using many gas cans, but it is uncommon. It will be nice to remember though. Goes well if combined with Tacticool Zombie.

Doubles the zombies’ health. Simple, but effective because you need to hit them twice even with Axe/ .357/ 7.62mm/ .308, making enemy havle the killing speed, which means halved gold income. It is also doesn’t have paticular weakness until late game other than SV10. Must Buy if you ask me.

Explosive Zombies

Explosive Zombies are every melee player’s nightmare. Zombies now explode on death, damaging anyone for up to 50 points. It is Super Effective against chainsaw, forcing enemy to discard it if they don’t want to die. Also can be used as “Explosive rush”, which can cripple enemy with just machette / axe and haven’t saved enough for guns. If not combied with other specials, it is hard to say which zombie is rigged, only by ticking.

As its icon shows, regardless of men / women, all zombies become pregnant like Dead Space, spawning a kid on their death. They are so annoying even if you know how to deal with them swift and steady. They spawn in blind angle if you are aiming guns near pregnant zombies. Good against guns with slow fire rate. They give 1 gold though, which can be used as advantage. Their tummy will blink pink if pregnant, but it is silent so be careful.

Tacticool Zombie

The new face and the “ultimate” addition to the zombie arsenal. The Tacticool Zombie make your zombie spawn not from near the gate, but from roof with rope rappelling. If you can kill gate zombie constantly, the enemy team will be always surrounded, spending more time checking their back. And remember, on this map, the killing speed is EVERYTHING. the more spent on aiming time = the less the enemy team can kill. They can also go right next to trophies, damaging them slowly over time. Goes extremely well with other zombie powerups. The price is the only downside, but you can afford it on late game.

Gambling Machine

TL;DR : DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU ARE IN SERIOUS GAME.

This will be unlocked once you acquire 100 kills.
As you press the button, the reel rotates, and stops after several seconds. It might give you items, depending on which thing you lined up. costs 5 gold per game.

The Fail

if the pictures didn’t match, it either just beep, or spits out useless items. The items will be either a can, a boot, or a melon. The melon is much more rare. This machine just fail many times, so you have to be patient to get something out of it.

The Good

Did you get 3x four-leaf clover? Congratulations! You won! You get one of these prizes listed below. The chance seem to be equal, while the gold being a bit rare.

Guns
You get random mix of 4 guns. The guns will be one of this: Remington 870, MP5, SKS, or Super X3. The X3 seem to be rare. The shotguns might come in handy in some situations. And yes, you are probably using CZ by now.
Melee
You get random mix of 4 melee. The weapons will be one of this: Wrench, Bat, E-tool, Shovel, Crowbar, Hatchet, Lead Pipe, Sledge, FUBAR. And yes, you are probably using CZ by now.
Throwables
You get random mix of 3 throwables. It will be either TNT or Molotov. Both will prove to be very useful. Sadly, you can’t resupply it like grenade other than winning it again.
Gold Bar
The real prize imo. You get Gold bar, either small or Big. Small gives 150 gold. Big gives 300 gold, but much rare. I have yet to see big one, just once after intense reeling.

The Meh

Did you get 3x horseshoes? Uhm….. It’s ok, I suppose. It will be Good, Bad, or WTF. The chance of being good seems to be higher than bad.

You might ask WTF is WTF. All I can say is, WTF is WTF. You have to find it out WTF happens yourself. I went WTF when I saw it. So yeah. WTF.

The Bad

Did you get 3x poop? Ok, now you, including your teammates, get punishment for wasting another 200 gold down the drain. And again, chance seem to be equal. Super Zombie feel a bit rare though.

The Punishment
Description
Super Zombie
The machine summon a special runner. The zombie shine in rainbow, and plays famous Mario star theme. For this obvious reason, He CANNOT be killed by any means, including the panic button, So someone have to kite him. He lasts for about 90-120 seconds before just going poof. Thank me if you get killed, because I suggested the creator some idea of it. U MAD BRO?
Dynamie
The machine summon a special dynamite. This eventually explodes, killing anyone nearby and damaging others. The fuse seem to be random, so anyone trying to dispose it to safer area take lisk of dismemberment.
Slap
What could be better punishment than good-old slap? It tosses everyone in your team to random direction, damaging you as you fall. It will do some serious damage, which is well enough to kill someone who is gone black and white. It might even slaps around you several times, almost instakilling you.
Zombie rush
All the gates on your side will be slammed open, and 6-ish runners spawn from runner spawn. Unless your team is winning hard, some of the gates must be closed before the zombie floods out, hitting the 50 limit.

Other Services

Respawn Button – 10 Gold per click

You can respawn who is dead and sent to VIP(Very Incompetent Person)room. This cost really hurts on early waves, and still does even on later levels if pressed repeatedly. So, you really shouldn’t die on this map in the first place.

Pills/Medkits – 10 Gold to unlock each

As I said before, survival on this map is vital.Use these often to do so. they respawn every time you open it once unlocked.Again:its cost is really high while early phase.DO NOT buy these early.

Music – Free

Once in few minutes, you can play music to stop zombies.It is free and repeatable,so it is nice when you are overwhemed and machines are too crowded.

Panic Button – Once per battle

This clears out entire zombies/runners/kids, starting from near the button toward the spawn.This process takes a few seconds. It is great to wipe out dangerous zombie which you cannot deal with your weapon, and gives some breathing time to restock.Use this chance to launch counterattack, because you can go offence(see Advanced tactics for details about offence).It is locked for first 2 minutes. Punch the glass, and use it to activate. The glass is hard to hit with axe. Stay away from explosive zombies, because they still explode violently.

Runner-O-Matic – 3 gold per spawn

You can spawn one runner at “runner spawn” area. These will not count against 50 limits and does give gold, but unaware enemy will likely die. It also buy some time to kill more zombies while the enemy taking care of runner who doesn’t spawn zombies to you.You can spawn up to 10 zombies at a time.Rather costy to spam on early game.

Winner’s Cup – 150 gold per cup, 3 maximum

These shinies give you 1 gold every second.It’s not much, but helpful for long game if you want to spam runners and save 1000 gold. You can move the display table around before you place the cup. Place them somewhere safe,since zombies come to destroy these.It’s wise to put them near ammo vendor, cause you have to defend there anyway.

What’s in the box? – 1000 gold

The box turns out to be a controller, to control….uh….propeller+carriage+gas can+detergent thingie. You can use this to run over enemy team. Interact the controller again to control. Use WASD to move around.If it’s turned over, press click to flip back up. You can also dismount with use or right click, but just don’t. You become invulnerable while you are in control, but take pills before you drive. This also plays some nice music too.(Katzenjammer – Le Pop)

Advanced Tactics

The attack and defence on Dodgeball

This is so important rule that I mention again from basic rule section:

If you kill zombies that spawned from gate, the enemy gets 1 zombie at random place
near gates. ONLY these zombies get buffs from vending machine.
Zombies that sent from enemy team does NOT send zombies back to the enemy.

So, if you kill a zombie from gate, enemy get 1 zombie. While they are killing that 1, you managed to kill another 1. While they are killing that 1, you kill 1.And so on. Got it? If you can keep killing fresh zombie fast enough, your enemy have to kill your zombie to keep the zombie number low.Which means, even when both of you and enemy got infection zombies, you don’t have to worry much about green gas while your enemy have to inhale that tasty cloud.I call this “Attack and Defence”. If you’re killing more fresh zombies than your enemy do, you’re attacking.If not, you’re defending. While it depends heavily on weapons and player skills, the offence/defence will not switch easily,because the offence team can always kill easily,whith means better gold,which means better weapons/zombies.
This leads 2 golden rules. 1:open gates and kill=win. 2:Win earlier phase (punch/ Hammer phase)and ensure you’re on offence=win.
There are some items that might turn the tide: Chainsaw(115gold, when no explosives), CZ(100+60 gold), Panic button followed by opening most gates and slaughtering your zombie fast as possible (single use).

(*1):Need to penetrate at least 2 per each shot.
(*2):Fired from hip, double kill chance=10%ish for me
(*3):Need to penetrate 2 constantly, and sometimes 3. Firing from hip is a bit faster, but worsened penetration rate = bad DPS.

Interacting with machine

You can buy/spawn items while you are reloading. Use this to eliminate the interval time as much as possible. Vital on solo.

Using brain on early phase(solo)

Try not to kill the enemy zombie on early phase by remembering which zombie is not from your gates. this can force your enemy to kill your zombies, maybe he even close some gates,which means you will win eventually.

Sealing off enemy runners

You can put 1 or 2 gas cans on runner spawn points, saving your rear for up to 12 minutes with mere 20 gold.You can also do this with cups by placing them there, but fend them off once they spawn.

Item build and things to do per phase/situation

Punch phase(very early game)
Recommended items: Rip Claw Hammer

As you spawn, run like hell to open 2 gates per team, and spawn 2 zombies. close gates once you get your first batch, and hit them with quick attacks. Try to hit them for sides so you won’t punch them straight back, making them unhittable for shot time. Run to the vendor as soon as you get your 2 gold, then grab a knife.

Rip Claw Hammer phase(early game)
Recommended items: Axe, Machette, SV10, S&W686

This is the most important phase of all freaking time.Save all gold to get better weapon, since Rip Claw Hammer is still a joke. If you buy medkit/ pills/ ammo/ respawn here, you hurt your own team way too serious, and giving enemy enough time to farm too many gold. This phase also is the time you can die to save medkit. I say again: Every single gold counts here.
v5 update: It is now replaced with Claw hammer( it was knife in older version). The range is now even shorter, and zombie won’t back off just with your luck. So, it is even more important to win (or for some people actually, survive) on this phase. Just practice with it. A LOT. At least, I haven’t used it for a while now, so having some tough time.

The Weapon Choice:

Axe: If you are sober person, buy this. Good DPS, long enough range,1 hit if you charge for fraction of second, and costs almost no stamina.
1.08 Update: Now you have to HOLD the mouse button as your character brings up axe, wait for a bit, THEN release to do this, Otherwise, it won’t be counted as charge attack.

Machette: If you are solo and got infected/bled early, you have to buy this. Lower DPS than axe, but better than tiny hammer anyway. Use quick attack. If you are duo or more, forget this unless your entire team is dead. You can recover stamina faster when crouching.

SV10: While it is strongly discouraged,if your team is just too bad at melee, you can use this as placeholder. Buy ammo, revive teammates, and go for S&W or Beretta asap.

S&W 686: Are you good at firing from hip? And Do you feel lucky, punk? You can save just 7 more gold from axe to buy this, which got more DPS than axe if you go for hip firing, plus countering explosive zombies automatically without paying additional money.

Farm phase(middle game)
Recommended items:Medkit/pills, Explosive zombie, Double health, Zombie Prgnancy, S&W686, Beretta M92F, CZ858

Now it’s time to put your farming skill to test. Exploit the weapon you bought and kill,kill,kill. Use the gold wisely, and buy CZ when you reach 100gold, while preventing enemy from doing so. Open/close gates as needed to control zombie numbers. I recommend keeping it to 15-25, so you cannot be short of targets, while saving enough time until the 50 zombie limit if things go wrong.

If you are attacking, purchase Double health/ Infection/ Explosive zombies to ensure the lead, if the enemy is keeping up. if not, go straight for CZ.
If you are defending, buy 686 or M92F as counter if needed.

The alarm is gonna go off/went off(middle game)

If you are solo or duo ,and the zombie counter is keep raising, consider buying gas can and put them at the furthest or nearest 4 gates from spawn, then open gates and set them on fire. this gives free gold, and send some zombie back to slow down enemy attack. Add double health asap to maximize the effect.Keep an eye out for fire runners,they do massive damage. Alternatively, if you dont have time to set up, you can ignite them at middle , then lure zombies there. Risky, but it helps nontheless.

If your alarm is ringing, press the panic button immidiately. Free 2gold/sec is way outrageous gift to the enemy, even for 10 seconds.It also clearing out enemy zombies, so you dont have to deal with damned boomers/hardheads. Use this time for rebreathing, and open up gates to start some counter attack.

Either team got CZ(late game)
Recommended items:The 1000g box,all zombie powerups, Trophies, Runner button

If you are still using hammer, gg. You’re doomed.
If you got other than that, save all money for CZ. You really can’t fight back without it.
Don’t resurrect unskilled players who cannot kill 10 zombies by themselves.
Place the cups if your team is winning but low on zombies. Close some gates near the cup if you can keep the enemy alarm to guard it easily.
Use runner button when someone is refilling ammo, or someone is near the runner spawn and facing the other side. press it 4-5 times and he will likely die. If only 1 is left on enemy team, press it when he’s trying to resurrect others so you can spawn kill the fresh members.other than that, just spam it if you got 3 cups or 500+gold anyway. Open the box when you hit 1000gold, and you win.
