Overview

A few webcams that work well with ViewTracker

Introduction

To work well with ViewTracker, a webcam should provide at least 640×480 resolution at 30 fps. It’s also important that the frames are delivered with low noise and at a low latency. Resolution and framerate are usually clearly advertised by the camera manufacturer, but it’s more difficult to know how well it performs in terms of noise and latency.

Higher maximum framerates and resolutions usually require a better sensor overall, which means when the camera is used at a lower resolution and framerate it will have less noise. Also note if you are using ViewTracker in low light conditions you will usually have better results with a more expensive camera.

Recommended Models

The following is a list of webcams that work well with ViewTracker along with the price on Amazon as of 12/26/2018:

  • PlayStation 3 Eye – $6.98
  • Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 – $24.40
  • Logitech C920 – $49.50
  • Logitech C922 – $71.63

The least expensive option that works well with ViewTracker is the PlayStation 3 Eye. It’s capable of 640×480 at up to 60 fps but in order to work with ViewTracker it requires installation of open source drivers[github.com]. I wouldn’t recommend any other webcams in the $10 price range.

If you spend more you can get better low light performance. I have found that the Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 does pretty well in low light. On the higher end, The Logitech C920 and C922 have been reported to work well.
