Hotline Miami 2 Level Editor Tutorial

Overview

Hello everyone! The Hotline Miami level editor has been out for a long while now, yet no one ever made any video tutorials explaining how it works. It still can be very confusing to new players, and there’s tons of hidden tricks and work-arounds that even experienced player may not know about. These guides aim to cover every aspect of the editor, from level design to mods to entire custom campaigns! I’m your host, Rob Salmon, creator of A real Human Bean, 9 Lives, Berlin Blitz and more! Joining me is my co-host Matt, aka mvfolevh; creator of Requiem and a number of awesome Hotline Miami 1 remakes. Our combined knowledge of the editor should be enough to teach you every facet of the system!As we create more episodes, I will continue adding onto this guide, so stay tuned for much more content If you have any questions, or suggestions on what to cover/ change, let us know! The Basics

This episode we cover the basic essentials of the editor, so the you can get a better grasp of where to begin. But very soon we will go into the more advanced topics!

Level Design

This episode we cover how to make your bad levels suck less, ramble about how much dodgers and ducking enemies are terrible, and tasteful floor designs. Hopefully the rest of the episodes will be a lot more focused, since this one gets a bit rambly. My excuse is that level design is kind of an abstract topic, and much harder to teach than say, cutscenes. But hopefully it was of help anyways!

Cutscenes

This episode we cover how to make cutscenes so cinematic Stanley Kubrick would shed a tear. There’s a trillion aspects to the cutscene editor, but we just tried to show you the basics of Frames, Actions, and triggers so you can get creative on your own.

Also, never add cutscenes at spawn in a combat level. Ever.

Campaigns, Covers, and Publishing

This episode we cover how to make campaigns out of your single levels, duplicate levels for cutscenes, add custom covers and thumbnails, and publish your levels! Wow that’s a lot man! No wonder it’s 40 mins long….

Notepad ++ editing

This episode we we’re joined by Yossarian the Assyrian as we explain to you the magic and mechanics of Notepad++, an essential tool for level editing! Want to add cool disco ball? An explosive meth lab? Or just fix your stupid grammar mistake in a 52 page dialogue segment? Then this is the episode for you!

Sprite Modding

This episode we finally cover mods! Want new faces, enemies, guns, or whatever? This is how you do it!

This episode Legomack comes on to teach us how to make sprite like a real life video game maker dude.

Music Modding

This episode we teach y’all how to add sweet new tunes to Hotline Miami 2, because if I hear Sexualizer one more time I will take a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hostage.
