Overview
So if you’re just starting multiplayer on Crysis 2, you’re in for a lot of fun. The fun includes probably, a lot of dying. As a new player myself who came in with the Origin Humble bundle, I’ve picked up multiplayer quite quickly as I’ve had a bit of experience with crysis games before. I’ve had 2 most valuable player awards in my 4th session, with just a few hours of gametime.I might not have things exactly accurate in this guide, because I don’t know enough to remember names yet, so if someone could tell me, that would be great.
Getting Started
Well, you’ve just clicked the multiplayer button, and you’re faced with a menu. First thing you should do is customise your loadout. You get one unlock when you start, with one custom class, and an unlock from each of the weapon/equipemt/armor mod sections.
Now if you have the origin bundle, your game should come with a fully unlocked FY71. I recommend using that gun, it has high damage and is more likely to help when you panic. You probably want to grab the holo sight or extend, because the laser one… well, it shows where you are, which is never good. Underbarrel you should grab the extended mags. For starters, we probably will be just shooting not strategically switching weapon mods.
Now if you don’t have the origin bundle, bad luck. Go for the Medium Machine gun, the Mod 0. That is one damn good gun, but you’re stuck with default attachments to that gun. For the armor mod, I got a mod that reduces drain while in armor mode, something that comes handy with my playstyle and tactic. For power I grabbed the aim enchance mod, and for stealth… it didn’t really matter, since I wouldn’t be using stealth to kill. But for refrence, I am using Blind Spot.
I’ll explain in the next section why I chose these, when I explain gameplay.
Gameplay
I recommend you join this for starters. In my first game, I found that sticking close to my teammates usually resulted in less death, and it really didn’t matter what mode I was in, as long as when bullets come in, I was in armor mode. However, once I started getting the hang of it, I found I was soloing more and more.
So here’s a few tips for you lone wolfers out there.
Movement
Generally, you want to move around. Although I’ve had a really good experience just going armor mode and camping a room with 2 or less doorways, it might not always be a good idea to stay there. Note though, corridors are a nice place to camp, provided you are in a mode when someone shows up so you don’t die instantly. The general rule for moving around is to use stealth when you are moving to a wide open area, or climbing stairs when you suspect there’s probably no one there, and use armor mode at all other times, even if you don’t think there’ll be anyone.
Dealing with Stealth
I found stealth quite useless in combat, it just drained all my energy and left me very weak against attacks. Of course there must be more options the higher level you are, and more skilled you are, but for new players, you should keep your expectations of doing anything stealthed to 0. Stealth for movement only. So what do you do when there’s other players stealthed? You turn on nanovision, that’s what. Cloaked units show up in nanovision as a light blue anomaly. It’s better than just staring at thin air wondering if that blur is a cloaked enemy and then dying before you can shoot. With nanovision, it’s more obvious that there’s someone cloaked. So my idea is to keep nanovision on whilst in armor mode, even though it drains energy like a leech. Don’t ever leave it on in stealth mode however, you have to strategically toggle it or else your cloak will last only 3 seconds.
Falling Back
This is important, always have a fall back position. You find these while stealthed and then regenerate energy before going into armor to shoot things. If you find you are far away from your team, your best bet is either camping with armor mode and nanovision, or falling back using stealth and luck. Personally I camp, but that’s just me.
You’re supposed to be adaptable with your modes, because there are different game types, as I’ll go through next.
Game Modes
Team Instant Action
This is what you will want to start off playing. Just follow the basic rules, and you will be able to contribute to your team from minute one. Oh yeah, go into armor or stealth as soon as you spawn, whenever you spawn, because sometimes the game likes to spawn you near an invisible enemy, and then you’re really in for some fun.
Instant Action
This is basically just the above except it is free for all. It’s recommended to have some mobility in this game mode as you want to keep moving around. Make sure you check behind you as enemies can spawn behind you as well. Stealth plays more here than in Team Instant Action.
Crash Site
In this mode your team must capture and protect an alien pod, so it is basically king of the hill. What I must point out that whilst a sign on top of your head says capture and you’re invisible, it’s actually not hard to look for cloaked enemies in a 1-2 meter radius. That netted me a double kill the 2nd game I played of multi. If you don’t know what you’re doing, stay armor mode. Crouch behind cover somewhere and stay there, in armor mode, and wait for your team to get there. Periodically scan for invisibles on your level and above you.
Extraction
Extraction involves either protecting or acquiring the 2 special alien ticks from the enemy team. Each tick gives bonuses to the team if you have control of it. Because of this, my prefrence is that the armor tick is more valuable and should be closely guarded.
Assault
This is a rare game mode to find, at least in the Australian servers. You are one of two teams, the black ops or nanosuits. The black ops must defend terminals from nanosuit soldiers that try to download data from them. You only have one life in this mode. Black ops soldiers lack a nanosuit and are extremely fragile, so hide well. As black ops, you have access to full auto weapons such as the SCAR, Feline, or SCRAB. To be honest I think the weapon that helps most is the Feline, sporting high fire rate that will down a nanosuit soldier in 1 second if aimed right. Usually it will come to close combat anyway since the nanosuit soldiers lack any kind of heavy weaponry, they only recieve pistols. If you are a nanosuit soldier, my tip to you is to take the hammer pistols and use armor mode when close, melee is very good here. Move around with stealth, the black ops can pick you off easily if they see you.
