Overview
In this guide me and my friend will describe maps and the best settings for roleplaying on them and the best attack strategies.
Introduction
Hello! Many of you may be new to this game, and others may be pros. Either way, I hope you enjoy the guide that me and my friend Rensten have created!
We will be talking about the maps and the best strategies on them, as well as the best parts for roleplaying. If you don’t like roleplaying, skip to the section labeled Attack Strategies – Dinos and Humans – Made by Rensten. The strategies will start there, and after that I will be talking about the best tactics for each dino on each map. If you don’t like fighting, go right on through Gamemodes – Other. If you don’t like roleplaying, still check out those sections – There is some interesting information that will also help in fighting. Thank you for reading our guide!
Gamemodes
For all those new players out there, you probably don’t know all the gamemodes. Here is a list of them and a description so later on you aren’t like, “What?”. If you know all the gamemodes, feel free to skip this section.
Team Death Match Swap (TDM) – the carnage in Primal Carnage. Dinosaurs vs. humans, kill as much as you can. Midway through the round the players switch sides, from human to dino or vice versa and the final score is made up from the total team kills for the round. TDM Swap is an ideal game mode for competitive play as it does not require “perfect balance” between the two teams (which is nearly impossible to ever achieve in any asymmetric class-based team game) because teams have the same chances of scoring kills by the end of the round. TDM is a game mode that will function on most maps.
Server Option: Disable Swap- Server admins can disable the mid-game swap if they want to host a less competitive game. With this option the game would swap team at the end of the round
Get to the Chopper (GTTC) – in which humans must capture several points on a mostly linear path before signaling for rescue by helicopter. Each point is captured by holding it for a period of time (which varies depending upon the map and specific location. If human team is able to advance through all of the objectives by the end of the round they win and if they don’t the Dinosaur team wins. The Tyrant dinosaur class remains locked, for the dino team, until the humans complete the penultimate objective, making the completion of the final objective particularly epic. This game mode was the second game mode introduced to the original game and brought objective-driven gameplay to the brand, which makes it more appealing to those players turned off by the chaos of TDM.
Free Roam – essentially a sandbox mode, playable on any map that gives server admins the ability play with different options (such as whether or not players take damage); a primary difference of this mode is the absence of scoring mechanics. This mode caters to the role playing community that has shown sustained interest in the game, even during periods when the overall player-base has dipped. A few “odd” maps were specifically created for this mode (often by developers in their free time) that are free of the general level design heuristics in most of the maps that ensure balanced gameplay. Custom Free Rome maps can be very large and open-worldy, thematic, rich with easter eggs, or just plain goofy. Enough fans enjoy them.
Capture the Egg (CTE) – The human team must collect dinosaur eggs that spawn around the map and safely bring them back to a safe-zone. This mode is similar to the “Capture the Flag” game mode seen in many multiplayer games but nuanced in that only one team has targets to capture. The development team has tested CTE with 2- 4 eggs in play that usually spawn a good distance from the safe-zone. Humans and dinosaurs alike can see the Egg icons and both sides are aware when making this a somewhat There are a variety of mechanic options under consideration for this mode and it would be very easy to create several game modes that each feel very distinct. Below are some of variables we will explore:
Set # Eggs to Win- Humans must capture x number of eggs to win and if they don’t dinosaurs win. This is the simplest form of the game and how it was introduced into the first Primal Carnage. The win condition resembles that of GTTC , but a less linear, more back and forth, game flow.
Team Swap, Most Eggs Wins – win condition and gameplay would resemble instead TDM Swap
Egg Hunt- thus far the development team has tested CTE with 2- 4 eggs in play at any time and usually spawn a good distance from the safe-zone, gener. The mods have discussed the possibility of a variant mode where a much larger number of eggs are in play or a larger portion of the map. This would result in a less strategic, more chaotic, “Hungry Hungry Hippos” style of gameplay.
Dino v. Dino – As the wiki, as it is old, has no information on this that is useful. So I’ll talk about it – Two teams of dinosaurs face each other (red team and blue team) and have to try to beat the other team.
Hunt – This is a game mode where a single semi-invisible (think Predator) supercharged dinosaur is pitted against a team of humans that it must kill before time runs out. This is a another game mode that works on most maps, where TDM and CTE typically also work.
This was copied off the official primal carnage wiki and may be outdated.
Forest-y Maps
- Forest Chasm
- Marsh
- Snowbound
- Downpour
- Ruthless
These maps are really the maps with less man-made structures. Some of the maps I included are GTTC maps, and it is possible for a admin to switch to a GTTC map on a freeroam server, so you can’t use them unless you manage to convince an admin to change the map for you. These maps are best for when you want a rp with not many humans in it and more wild, or if you want your character to incounter humans for the first time.
Forest Chasm
Forest Chasm is a map that is split in half by a ravine. There are various human structures scattered about the map. A very good map for rp if you want to be rping after the time of humans or in an area with very little humans.
Marsh
Marsh is a map that represents the JP3 plane crash. The middle is marshy while the outskirts are pretty dry. Its good for rps without many humans, and possibly humans scattered from the plane crash. Not very many buildings.
Snowbound
Snowbound is, obviously, a very snowy map. There is only three or four human structures, I believe. This map is not very common, so I suggust asking an admin or making the server youself.
A great map for roleplays with no humans or very little, and where your dino(s) are starving.
Snowbound may also be called “Frozen Chasm” as well.
Downpour
Downpour is one of the GTTC maps I mentioned. There are quite a few buildings, but they are covered with vines and moss. Great rp map for if those buildings are abandoned, or the humans are extinct.
Ruthless
Ruthless is also, I believe, a GTTC map. It is a rarely used map, so I do not know much about it.
I cannot tell you how many human structures are on there, but its a forest-y map, so I’m guessing not much.
Maps with More Buildings
- Airbase
- Docks
- Contingency
- The Falls
- Verdant
- Transfer
Airbase
Airbase is long abandoned. It is scattered with many human buildings and is great for roleplays that exist in dark times.
Docks
Docks is good for if you’ve been captured or are spying on the humans. Docks is commonly known, and is great for roleplay. Many roleplay servers are commonly on docks, so I seriously recommend rping on there.
Contingency
Contingency, also known as Atrium C, was constructed to house dangerous pterosaurs and theropods. Unlike the other holding facilities, this one was built with a failsafe that will kill any living creature inside the facility. Contingency is great for any type of roleplay. It is a fairly common map on any server.
The Falls
This atrium was designed and built to keep pterosaurs from escaping. When they got out, they let other things in. The Atrium dominates the center of the map and overlooks the ocean. The Falls is great for ptera or tupa roleplays. You could also roleplay as a human when the pterosaurs escaped and try to survive.
Verdant
This place was once a key power facility for nearby containment fences. Another very small map, players face chaos in the close-quarters of the facility. Verdant is great for roleplays with hand-to-hand combat, or in this case, claw-to-gun.
Transfer
Transfer is not a commonly used map, but it is of course a transfer of cargo. Perhaps in the rp YOU are the cargo and have to escape? Or you have to help the dinosaurs in the crates escape?
This is great for a black market sort of thing.
Other
- Forgotten Outpost
- Valley
- Seasons
- Utility Base
These are the maps that are both forest-y and humanoid.
Forgotten Outpost
Long abandoned, this place was an early test site for studying the nesting habits of theropods. The map features two bases on each side with a dark forest in-between. This is an amazing map to roleplay on.
Valley
Valley is an amazing map with a lake in the middle. A compound to the left and forest to the right.
The cave behind the waterfall is a perfect home for a depressed character or one who is trying to hide from someone or something.
Seasons
Seasons is a map that is seperated into 5 sections: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. The fifth is a sort of “Space” under the facility. Great for roleplays with dinos being experimented on or trapped somewhere.
Utility Base
Utility Base is a forgotten refuelling depot, left mostly untouched since the disaster. Nobody has been here in a long time. The depot is centrally located depot is in the direct center of the map with dense jungle and a small river on the outskirts. Great for any type of roleplay.
Attack Strategies [Dinos and Humans] – Made by Rensten
Novaraptors: Very agile and stealthy. Pouncing is probably the main tactic almost alot of people use. There is a better way other than pouncing though, hit and run tactics can be very useful especilialy when you’re in an open field. Circle around your enemy from behind. The disadvantages are glitching accidently or out of stam.
Dilophosaurus: Sorta like a pyro. Its main strategy is pretty much a hit and run tactic too like the Nova. But after it bits your enemys health decreases like venom or poision. Also Dilo can blind by spitting.
Carnotaurus: Pretty much ram through everything and bite when neccessary.
Tyrannosaurus: Probably the most strongest playable creature in this game. Since its hitbox is pretty wide, its easy to pretty much eat everything in sight. The only problem is, as well for other Tyrants is that they all have terrible turn radius. Limited stamana.
Pteranodon: Third fastest creature ingame. Capable of grabbing humans and dropping them by using fall damage.
Tupandactlyus: Fastest playable creature in game. Pretty much the air version of a Carno. The advantages are if theres a large group of humans not paying attention in an open area and if they’re healing or somthing, its that simple to just swoop down and hit them all.
Spinosaurus: Biggest playable creature in game and probably the slowest. Can use those arms to knock back humans and has long reach. The only disadvantage is how much of a big target it is.
Acrocanthosaurus: Fastest Tyrant. Can stomp a large group of humans if had the chance. Terrible hitbox.
Cryolophosaurus: Great for shooting from far distances and once a human steps on the acid, they start losing health. Its a very good opportunity when theres a large group.
Oviraptor: Probably the second fastest terrestrial creature ingame. Can jump high, can pounce quickly.
Fun Fact – the oviraptor, thought to be weak and stupid, as it’s feathered, actually has the same attack strength of the novaraptor.
Commando: Very good at shooting things that are slow or if neccessary can take on anything fast enough. Great to take on tyrants and blowing them with grenades.
Pathy: Good for one shooting things such as Novaraptors or Dilos. Flares and hatchets are also very useful too against tyrants. The machete is also great for melee.
Trapper: Once they net something, it’s over for the victim. The dual cults dont do much damage to anything besides spitters. The bombs and landmines are good too.
Scientist: Great advantage very far away and relys on hitting far. This class is good for shooting and tranqing. The tranqs pretty much slow down anything.
Pyro: Great for circle jerking and blowing things up too, and also lighting up stuff.
The chainsaw is very useful when something’s lit on fire.
Attack Strategies [Maps and Advantages]
Verdant ~ Novas and ovis can camp out on the roofs of the buildings, and when a human walks in or out they can pounce. Dilo’s and cryo’s can do the same, except they can spit at the humans. If the humans are all camping in one building, carno’s can sprint through the building multiple times and would effectively kill some humans. Tyrants can wait outside the buildings and try to eat any humans close to the entrance (not very good tactic, though).Ptera’s and Tupa’s don’t do good because there are too many buildings for the humans to hde in, and it is easy to get sniped.
Valley ~ You can hide inside the compound in the vents as nova, ovi, dilo, or cryo. Those four classes can also ambush humans. If hiding inside the compound, a dark or gray skin is recommended. If ambushing, a green or yellow skin is recommended. With carnos, you can hide near a bush outside the compound and when humans go in or out you can charge at them. A green skin is recommended. Tyrants don’t have really have any advantages. When humans are outside, a ptera or tupa is pretty effective – just make sure you have a tactic.
Airbase ~ Novaraptor’s hit-and-run tactic, as described in the last section by Rensten, is great for when humans are camping. When they are grouped in the big building with the airplane & the carcass, run through and just spam attack. Go this a couple times (or until you have low health) go and heal and do this again. Same with ovi; except use pounce on lone humans. Carnos are best for running through the groups, its pretty much the same as nova. Tyrants honestly do not have many advantages on any map.
Contingency ~ Contingency… I have no idea. Come up with your own tactics and recommend them to me cuz why not 🙂
Docks ~ For most maps, the novaraptor hit-and-run tactic (which also works for the ovi), works. But for Docks, this is not usually the case. Humans usually camp on the boat, and when they camp in crates and such the area is too small to get an effective hit-and-run, as you can easily run into walls. The carno class is very good for this map, as it can quickly hit humans that are camping in crates and make a quick getaway. Dilos and cryos can stand on buildings and spit at humans, but when spotted try to find a new building. Tyrants and flyers don’t do well on this map very often.
Forest Chasm & Frozen Chasm (Snowbound) ~ If you’re being chased by humans, then find the “bridge” made of rocks and jump to the other side – it is very rare for a human to make the jump. Ovis and novas, like the other maps, can pounce and use the hit-and-run tactic easily by jumping off cliffs. The most common human camp spot is near the small house by one of the bridges. This is an ideal spot, because tyrants can easily come through. There are plenty of places to ambush along the way for the novas and ovis, and the dilos and cryos can easily snipe. The fliers can swoop in easily (tupa is recommended, as it’s faster) and hit/pick up the humans. The carnos can run through and wreck havoc easily as well.
Forgotten Outpost ~ The tyrants can chase humans through the forest area, and there aren’t many places they can’t reach. The bases on both sides offer almost no protection and there isn’t much stuff in the middle. Ovis and novas can use the hit-and-run tactic rarely, but they can ambush the humans as well as chase & pounce. The dilos and cryos can sit in one spot (sometimes move if your found out) and snipe people with the acid/poison. The carnos don’t serve much of a purpose, and the forest is almost too dense for the fliers to get through. If a flier does get through, tupa, just ram and run (like the nova hit-and-run tactic) and if your a ptera, pick someone up and glitch them through the bottom of the world – it’s faster.
Marsh ~ Same as most maps; nova and ovi can use the hit-and-run tactic & pounce, the tyrants can do somewhat well due to the lack of buildings (as well as the carnos) and the dilos and cryos can snipe people with their venom.
The Falls ~ Ptera and tupa are good on this map, since they can easily get through the holes in the (for lack of a better word) holding area. Ovi and nova can do their hit-and-run tactic and pounce. Humans usually camp in the small building that contains the gas valve, so tyrants can’t do much there. The best class for dealing with this is carno, as smaller dinos (ovi, nova, dilo, and cryo) don’t do well there. They’re better off picking off lone humans.
Transfer ~ Ovis and novas can hide in crates and attack lone humans, and dilos and cryos can find high areas and snipe people with their venom. Humans tend to cluster on a large platform near the road that goes down the middle, so both tyrants and carnos would work there.
Utility Base ~ Almost like Valley, with the same base setup (on the outside). Ovis and novas can hide inside and then attack, and it is easy for carnos to run through. Tyrants can’t get in, so they would have to stick around outside at the borders and try to eat any human that gets to close to the entrance. Dilos and cryos can take the walls, spitting venom/acid at as many humans as they can.
Downpour ~ A GTTC map. Not much is known of this map, as it is rarely used. If you have any tactics for me to put down, please tell me! 🙂
Ruthless ~ Same with Downpour. If you have any tactics, please tell me! Thanks :3.
Seasons ~ For the space section, use as nova or ovi as they can go the farthest. The hit-and-run tactic isn’t usually needed on this map, as humans don’t tend to cluster. The nova and ovi tactic that works best here, as humans tend to go off on their own. Carnos aren’t needed often, either, for the same reason. Dilos and cryos can find a good spot high up and vnipe (venom snipe XD) people. Tyrants are somewhat effective, as there isn’t a huge amount of humans to shoot them.
THIS IS FOR TDM AND GTTC PURPOSES, NOT DDM
