Overview
When I first started Awesomenauts I found Voltar to be my favourite Awesomenaut. His ability to Heal and Damage from afar is so much fun! Today I am going to bring you guys a guide that explains what choices I go through when playing Voltar. This guide will go over play style, shop choices, and variance based off whats going on!
The Basics Of Voltar
Voltar is a Healer and a DPS Mix. This allows you to be usefull in all sorts of matches. Providing you have the right build he can also have a nice bit of Burst DPS to nuke someone down in a matter of seconds! When playing Voltar you can fire your weapon to attack enemies or to heal allies. This is your primary ability. You also have drones that shoot automatically, these drones can also be sent to explode and deal AoE damage to enemies! Your final ability is Healbot, this is a AoE heal that is usefull for a lot of different things! You can use it while pushing a tower to heal the robots, or you can throw it down to heal yourself and nearby allies. Your jump on Voltar is a glide that allows you to slowly float to your destination. In the next section I will talk about what things in the Shop I purchase and the reason behind those purchases.
What To Buy / When To Buy Them!
There is no set “Build” while playing a character like Voltar. You have to be flexible so that you can help your team in the best possible way! This section of the guide will cover what items to buy and when to buy them. If there are other options that can be chosen I will state so.
[First Purchase]
The first purchase is Psychokinetic Repulsion this allows your attack hit two targets! This allows you to deal damage while healing an ally, heal two allies at once, and even attack to enemies at once. I feel like this is the most useful upgrade because you will be able to help heal and damage at the same time.
[Second & Third Purchase]
You can choose either or. If your allies are constantly getting hit hard I would consider getting Psychothrust first to improve your healing and range. If your allies are staying alive then I would suggest getting Drone Army which allows you to have a fourth Drone. Not only more auto attacks, but also another explosive charge! Don’t be greedy and go for Drone Army if your allies are dying. If your allies die then they have to wait to respawn and that allows time for the enemies to push!
[Fourth Purchase]
Twisted Nightmares should be your fourth purchase. This allows you to deal more damage with your base attack. I suggest getting this early on because with the further range and being able to hit multiple enemies you can output a lot of damage really quickly!
[Fifth Purchase]
This one depends on two things. First thing is if you are able to use your drone bombs correctly. When you get an enemy down to 25% health or lower you will want to spam your bombs until they die. This allows your to quickly burst down enemies that think they are safe. If you just cant get the hang of that (OR) you’re not able to purchase Warpgate Overdrive yet I suggest you go Weapon Clip-On.
[Sixth Purchase]
This one is based completely on your last choice. If you chose Warpgate Overdrive then you will want to choose Weaponised Hull. If you chose Weapon Clip-on then you should choose Hyper Drive. Simple no? The reason you never want to choose Dark Matter Shots is because the only use for it is escape. If you want to nuke an enemy you actually help them run away by shooting bombs at them! Thats why I never pick up that purchase.
[The Rest & Footnotes]
As for the leftover upgrades the first one to talk about is Piggy Bank. You should buy piggy bank if you did not pick up enough solar to purchase Psychokinetic Repulsion before the game starts. You should always start with Psychokinetic Repulsion! If you don’t need to purchase it the choice is up for you. It really depends on how long you think the game will last. If you think it will be a long game don’t purchase it but if it looks like a short game purchase it to give yourself a quick boost!
When looking at when and what things to buy you just need to look at whats going on. If you are having trouble keeping allies alive or pushing towers I would suggest upgrading your Healbot to heal for more, have a reduced cooldown, etc. If you end up dying a lot I would suggest upgrading your HP and damage reduction. And finally if you are having troubles reaching your allies to heal them then upgrade your movement speed.
How I play Voltar
When I play voltar I try to get myself positioned where I can heal allies while dealing damage to either an enemy or a tower. This might be hard, so don’t try to force it, but if you see the opportunity then take it. Also make it clear at the start of the game that you’re willing to heal your allies if they come to you. You are a Healer and that is your main job! A good healer can make or break a team! When pushing with your teams bots you can use your Healbot to heal all of them! This can help you push for a few extra seconds. If you have some allies near the tower when pushing this can allow for a lot of extra damage! When fighting allies don’t be afraid of a 2v1. You can attack then backstap and repeat until you get them low. If you need more health throw down your healbot and hope they don’t break it. Once you get them low throw your drones at them to remove the last bit of their health and kill them. That’s all there is to it! Once you get the hang of this guide Voltar becomes a cakewalk and you can finish matches with 1-2 deaths and 6+ kills! I personally get 10+ kills with 0-2 deaths. 0.7 deaths per game is my current stat.
I hope you all enjoyed this guide and found out something new! Thank you so much for reading!
