Create Desktop Shortcuts to each expansion for Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition

Create Desktop Shortcuts to each expansion

Overview

A guide to create desktop shortcuts to launch each expansion in the Megaton Edition

Introduction

This guide will take you through creating desktop shortcuts for each game in the Megaton Edition

DISCLAIMER: This guide has only been tested on a Windows 7 64 Bit PC, This tutorial may vary based on Operating System, and information in this guide may not work on your system, I assume this will work on all Windows based PC’s, although I am not sure if it will on OSX or Linux

Getting Started

To start, simply create your first Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Shortcut, to do this, right click the game in your Steam library, and select “Create Desktop Shortcut”

On your desktop, copy and paste the shortcut three times so eventually you are left with four shortcuts to launch the Megaton Edition

Once you have completed this, move onto the next section

Launching Expansions

Once you have created your shortcuts, rename them to something which you can easily identify each shortcut by, I’m going to name each shortcut “Name of Expansion – Megaton Edition”

After you are done, you should end up with something similar to this, depending on how you decided to name your shortcuts

Now, right click the expansion that you wish to create a shortcut to, and go to properties, and edit the URL field to correspond with the correct expansion pack

Here are the URLs for to launch each game, and each expansion

URLs
  • Duke Nukem 3D: steam://rungameid/225140/
  • Duke It Out In DC: steam://rungameid/225140//-addon 1
  • Nuclear Winter: steam://rungameid/225140//-addon 2
  • Duke Caribbean: Life’s A Beach: steam://rungameid/225140//-addon 3

IMPORTANT: THERE CAN NOT BE ANY SPACES IN THE URL: IF THIS GUIDE DOES NOT WORK, CHECK YOUR SHORTCUTS FOR SPACES OR “[link]

Once you launch the shortcut, you will get this message, simply hit OK, and the game should launch with the desired expansion pack

Extra: Customization

Once you have created your shortcuts, you may wish to personalize them some more, for example, I will be adding custom icons to my shortcuts, to do this, go back to properties where we originally changed the URL, instead however, hit “Change Icon”, browse to the folder where your ICO file is and select it, the shortcut will change depending on which one you selected it

IMPORTANT: ICONS MUST BE IN .ICO FORMAT, ANY OTHER FORMAT WILL NOT WORK

I decided to go with icons relating to each expansion pack, and quickly threw some together to reflect this

If you wish to use my icons, I have uploaded them on my dropbox here, however the icons are very rough and you may wish to create your own.
