Overview
This is a tutorial on muting your OWN microphone in EDF 4.1 since there is no other way as far as I know.
Y u do dis EDF?
Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any way to mute your own mic ingame.
1. Crap way: You can just disable your mic in the Windows 7 Sounds tab. Annoying if you actually use your mic.
(Start menu-> Type: Sounds -> right click and disable/enable your mic).
2. The Best Alternative: EDF4.1 (and Steam) chooses your “Default Device” as the ingame microphone- therefore, you can make another “useless” mic your “Default Device.” I have a Realtek Microphone (driver) that does nothing, so I made it my Default. Put its mic volume to 0. Stereomix is also a good choice to set as default, and set its volume to 0. (Stereomix is a “virtual mic” that records your own computer.)
This step can be slightly annoying in the future, since other applications will default to it. Easy to revert though!
Now I can use discord and not annoy everyone else!
3. The easy, repetitive way: As host, turn off CHAT when creating a room. This prevents typing too, though, so I don’t use this. (I need communication for Inferno missions.) You have to enable this option every time you host though.
There are more good tips in the comments section! Like muting/unplugging your mic before you load up the game. Or muting your Steam Microphone in Steam Settings (this doesn’t seem to work though. Even at 0 volume, EDF4.1 will still pick up your mic; Steam also *always* uses the default mic, you can’t change it- incredibly annoying).
