Overview
This guide details the steps & license required to successfully launch the game from your Steam library.
Opening
For anyone who has done a little digging has noticed, there is no RIP trilogy demo listed. Why Vigil: Blood Bitterness still needs the license for this is beyond me. I suspect it’s a lazy leftover of when Meridian 4 still published this game.
Anyway, I’m creating this for anyone in the future to use so this won’t get buried in the discussion tab. We can all thank Codename Gordan for giving me this idea when I ran into this and I can confirm that it works.

Getting the demo license
Open your browser, paste in the following information in the URLweb address field and press enter
steam://install/2560
For those who are curious, this is a link that points to the app ID of the demo within the steam client. You might be prompted to install the demo from Steam, just cancel that, you just need the license so you should be ok to actually play the game. When you launch Vigil, it shouldn’t redirect to the delisted store page for the demo anymore either.
Running the game
Vigil: Blood Bitterness has more issues that I’ve encountered, some of these are fixes that have been mentioned in the discussions page that I’m going to include as well.
1. Go into the local install path of the game and find the .exe. Run it in Windows XP Service Pack 3. This will allow you to see SOME in-game videos.
2. When you launch the game, DO NOT run it in a higher resolution than 1024 x 768. This will prevent subtitles from displaying in-game as well as preventing you from actually reaching parts of the level because your mouse can’t reach there.
3. As mentioned before, only SOME videos will play in-game. What you have to do is press alt-enter to change the game to windowed mode to see any video that doesn’t show up. You’ll know you have to do this because the audio will play for the video but you’ll just see a black screen. Be prepared to test your patience, the game will switch back to full screen for every level load and video that plays. Even after all of this, it seems like there are some videos that refuse to play.
