Overview
This guide offers a small collection of tips that will hopefully allow you to optimize your path through this game.
Introduction
This is a very niche game, and it is understandable why many people wouldn’t be interested in it. However, someone who may find themselves within the target-market of this game shouldn’t be discouraged by the overall negative reception. This game is truly nothing more than a digitalization of what it would be like to play a pen-and-paper table-top game where you roll dice to “battle,” and to slowly raise the stats on your character sheet. And as nothing more than that, I believe it is actually an enjoyable game for those who would appreciate it.
This game is all about grinding. Whether you read and heed these tips, or don’t… as long as you keep playing then you will eventually level up enough to max all skills, have high stats, and ultimately beat the game.
The following is a small collection of tips based on how I eventually beat this game. It is nothing earth-shattering… just some information that isn’t directly explained in the game and may save you a few hours of total playtime if you know about it going in, rather than having to figure it out as you play.
Optimizing The Grind
- You may want to choose the Elf character. This character will level up magic-power the most efficiently, which will allow you to do more damage and finish the game the quickest.
- Play the tutorial for the basics and allow yourself to die once before you read on; this will help the information to make more sense.
- Items each have a level and a rarity. The rarity aspect is shown by the color of the gem in the top-center of the item card (as well as by how many stats the item modifies). The items with the purple gem (the ones which modify 4 stats) are the highest quality. Be on the lookout for them from the start. Early on if you get one and it is a significant upgrade, you should Retreat immediately and make sure you secure it. Later on, you can opt to use Goblin Insurance to secure rare item drops.
- When you first start out just Retreat early and often as you get new gear upgrades and especially if you get “blues” or “purples.” Early on, it is quick to restart the dungeons so you will actually save time by making sure you don’t die and lose items.
- When you are in town, you can press ESC to bring up the menu. Here you can re-load your profile repeatedly which will re-roll the gear in the shop each time. You can do this whenever you are in town, but the shop will only have “blues” at best.
- Potions are expensive in the early game, but very cheap late game. They also provide marginally more bang-for-your-buck if you save them for grinding The Dark Tower.
- The mechanics of the game will have you inevitably grinding out waves of enemies who give no XP to reach the higher waves where you just died. To speed this process up, focus on leveling up the Windbreaker and Blitz Attack skills. These will let you quickly move through early waves when grinding the longer dungeons. You can put them at the start of your ability queue and dish out two attacks before the enemy can do anything. Focus on these abilities first.
- Water Double and Earth Shield will help a lot against enemies you can’t instagib so you may want to level them ASAP to help you go as far as possible on each dungeon run, maximizing XP gain.
- The Goblin Insurance goes up in price each time you rebuy it. I wouldn’t recommend getting it at all in the first area, and only sparingly until you reach the final area (The Dark Tower). Once you are grinding the final area, and are at least getting past wave 20, then you should start buying the Goblin Insurance every time, this way you can play until you die on each run— thus maximizing XP gain.
- The Dark Tower is a wicked grind. Once you are reaching wave 50 or so, you probably will want to start buying and using potions sparingly to get as far as you can each time. This way you are getting maximum XP before having to start over again. Retreat only at the last second and rely on Goblin Insurance if you go one battle too far. Money is easy to come by, so: just buy, buy, buy those potions and heal up after each fight until you get one-shotted. Then rinse-and-repeat until you finally win.
