Vaults and you: which to choose and how to beat

Overview

I found that existing guides, although invaluably useful, do not contain enough info to make this quite grindy game faster. One game session can take up to several Hours to finish, which sucks. To speed things up, you can either use console (which is fine, no one will judge you for that) or just know exactly where to go, what to get and whom to send.This guide offers searchability and color-coded icons so you could make calculated decisions faster.All data taken from CS wiki[cultistsimulator.gamepedia.com] and Frangiclave by Lyrositor[frangiclave.net].

Vaults 101

Vaults are the dungeons of Cultist Simulator. You are meant to send someone in to take everything of value out of it for you. This is how it works:

  1. You need the Explore verb with the card with Vault aspect put in it. This will show 4 (sometimes 5) more slots to fill: 2 for your Followers and two for Funds. (You’ll have 1 more slot in the repeatable Vaults, except the first. This slot is relevant only for Dancer DLC.) You have to send at least 1 Follower and 1 Funds to start an expedition. One obstacle (every vault is basically a set of obstacles) requires 1 Funds, and will need 1 more if your followers fail to overcome it (granted that didn’t finish your expedition for good).
  2. After the start of expedition, you’ll be able to send more Funds or Followers from time to time. This way you can overcome more obstacles and/or stop decaying of your summons or hirelings.
  3. Every Vault has its own set of obstacles. This guide will list these obstacles and ways to beat them.
  4. Every obstacle is defeated by followers sent, if their aspects are matching. Any obstacle have at least 2 aspects that defeat them, so you’ll always have a room for manoeuvre.
    However, there is no way to beat an obstacle with 100% probability:

    • If your expedition team’s relevant aspect is between 1 and 4, than your chance is 30%,
    • If you have from 5 to 9, than you have a 70% chance, and
    • 10 or more of the aspect needed grands you a whopping 90% success rate.
  5. Penalty for failing the obstacle depends on the obstacle type. There are 4:
    • Seals: you just have to try again in 30 seconds.
    • Guardians: 70% chance of injury. Summons will be killed outright, followers will be sent back home and require medical help via Talk verb (costs 1 Funds).
    • Perils: 70% chance of injury. Works same as Guardians.
    • Curses: you’ll get an action box that represent a dormant curse. You’ll have to have a hard to obtain and maintain 10 or 15 Heart influence. If you fail to provide it at the moment just before the curse attacks, it will take something away. Curses targets are listed in the guide’s body. Despite all these adversities, obstacle will be removed.
  6. If an expedition fails due to lack of funds or followers, you get all cards you’ve put in the Explore Verb back, including the Vault card, and also 1 Dread and 1 Mystique. You can try again after that.
  7. After everything is killed and everyone is stepped over, you’ll have your loot! And also 1 Notoriety, but mostly loot.

The problem is, clearing out every vault will give you all sorts and shapes of unnecessary crap. If you’re not in the mood for exploration of absolutely everything while dodging, well, absolutely everything else the game throws at you, you’re better have a plan, and I’ll give you the foundation for it.

Vaults 102

So, how do I get vaults in the first place, and how do I get the one I want?

Generally, you need to Explore with any Secret Histories Lore card. As any Lore, Secret Histories have even levels from 2 to 14, which covers 7 different areas with Vaults, and also 1 that is actually a ship so you can get it randomly at any exploring attempt. You can safely assume that the farther the Vault, the harder it is, and the (generally) better the loot.

You can obtain Secret Histories lore like you do with other lore, while reading books, but due to its expendable nature you’ll have to use the Dream verb and visit Mansus.

Secret Histories Lore is unique in sence that you cannot convert it in any form or shape, but still can upgrade or downgrade it with Study verb. To upgrade you’ll have to beat several challenges:

  • on all lore levels: Knowledge challenge (Erudition or Library HQ),
  • levels 6+: Intuition challenge (Glimmering or Sanctuary HQ),
  • levels 10+: Illumination challenge (Fascination, Library HQ or Rarefied Mind skill).

You can get Rarefied Mind skill by upgrading your Scholarship skill with Forge, Knock, or Lantern lore, so plan ahead if you’re going to upgrade low- and middle-level Secret Histories lore to get to further Vaults.

You can get Library HQ by moving your HQ to Mordland’s Shop via the Explore Verb after you buy all Miss Morland’s stock. It’s the only way to get Library HQ at the moment, so it can not be listed in this guide’s body.

With that being said, using Lore card to find a Vault will grant you a random Vault from area deck according to the lore level. For example, Exploring with An Occult Scrap will give you a
random Vault from In the Capital area. You can repeat this until you get all unique Vaults once.

After you get all the unique Vaults from one area, Exploring with the same level lore card will grant you the repeatable Vault from this area. You can have any number of repeatable vault cards.

You can also Talk about Secret Histories lore with particular Patron, Sulochana Amavasya. This will grant you a repeatable Vault of lore level’s respective area, but it works only for lore levels 4, 6 and 8.

[Lore level random] Floating — The ‘Hebe Stanton’

The ‘Hebe Stanton’ is unique Vault I mentioned in the beginning. You can draw it while exploring with any Secret Histories lore. Here are the chances of drawing it:

Since Hebe is unique and you can only draw it once, I advise you to try and draw it early, before you’ll need to Study your Secret Histories to get to new places. I merged all my lore to get Port Noon Anecdote once and immediately get Hebe, which wasn’t very cost effective and virtually traumatized me for life. I will not grow old.
