The dawn of an area where automotive manufacturers toyed with special variants of road going vehicles to give them an advantage in rallying. That said, they were still in essence under powered front wheel drive bread-and-butter cars — Gearboxes designed to get laden vehicles moving, ratios selected for highway efficiency, soft suspension for maximum comfort — nothing really conducive to going ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fast.
To get them performing at their utmost best we’ll need to tune the drivetrain and suspension. Start with moving the brake bias a notch rearward. Open the differential (as these cars are hardly on-throttle traction limited). Get a nice tall first gear and close the ratios thereafter. Add a touch of negative camber, toe out the front and rear a notch, firm up the rear springs, stiffen the rear anti-swaybar… but ultimately : experiment.

HILLCLIMB
After the demise of Group B, brought on by the death of both competitors & spectators, manufacturers set to repurpose their vehicles for Dakar, Rallycross and/or Hillclimb. Peugeot entered the Pikes Peak Internation Hill Climb in 1987 against an experienced Audi team who had been competing there for some years. They believed it to be a good marketing platform for breaking into the US automotive market and armed with three 205 T16’s they put everything into winning. The Audi too made remarkable improvements and held them off, but had to set a new record (by 22sec) just to do so. Peugeot returned the very next year with a brand new 405 T16 which they took to victory in 1988 & 1989.
