Overview
Tips for how to approach the “Lucky Loser” achievement in HuniePop, including recommended date items and how to play them in dates.
Intro
I haven’t spotted a guide for this particular achievement yet, so here are some tips that helped me finish it.
Getting started
– You can get this achievement on easy difficulty, so first things first, after Kyu gives you the Huniebee, go ahead and set that sucker on easy and make your life less of a headache.
– Of course, the point of this achievement is to succeed with girls without upgrading any of your stats, so resist the urge to upgrade them, no matter how intuitive it feels to do so.
– Go on the fewest dates possible. With dates getting harder as you complete more of them, you don’t want to be setting yourself up for the difficulty being any harder than absolutely necessary.
– So to keep the dates at a minimum, choose three girls to court and stick to just dating them.
– I don’t know if any girls really are more or less difficult – I think I read somewhere that Beli and Kyanna are easier to court, and didn’t really have any reason not to work with them. (My choices were Beli, Kyanna, and Jessie).
– If nothing else Nikki consistently seems more difficult that the other girls, so I would recommend not choosing her as part of this play-through, but otherwise it appears you can choose whomever you would like to court for this achievement.
– There is not time limit for how many days you have to complete this achievement, so I highly recommend that you take however much time you need to take, and use that time to collect as many date gifts as possible. To get through later dates, you will need to heavily rely on date gifts, so you want to give yourself the best selection.
Acquiring date gifts
– With a minimum number of dates, you aren’t going to have as much money in the game, so it is important to spend it carefully. Only purchase items that will yield Kyu sending you date gifts – ie, items that are part of a girl’s favorite collection. When you are talking directly to the girl, and open the item shop, they will be the items that appear with a heart next to them. Also, purchase the least expensive ones that you can – 300 or less per item.
– Kyu will send you date gifts no matter how many times you give the same girl the same item(s), so don’t be afraid of repeat gifts. You also can give gifts to any girl – not just the ones you are going on dates with, and still get sent those date gifts. (My play-through involved giving Tiffany decorative pens, Jessie baking utensils, and Nikki paint brushes and pencils over and over).
– It may take a while to unlock the items you really want, so wait until your inventory is completely full before you start culling items to avoid repeats. As your inventory is not quite large enough to hold all of the date items, you will have to get selective eventually. Read the item descriptions and throw out items that aren’t worth your time. (I consistently chuck eyelash curlers and hair brushes, for example).
Recommended date gifts
– Date gifts! These will be your best friends! Here are the ones that I recommend:
– Pink Mary Janes – +1 sentiment for passion matches for the rest of the match
– you will need passion anyway, so get some sentiment while you are at it
– Suede Ankle Boots – +3 sentiment fo 4-of-a-kind matches
– again, get some sentiment for something you will be doing anyway
– Perfumes are awesome! Use whatever perfume matches your date’s favorite affection token, so that more of that token will fall for the rest of the match.
– Cinnamon Perfume – for more sexual tokens
– Green Tea Perfume – more flirtation tokens
– Peach Perfume – more romance tokens
– Sea Breeze Perfume – more talent tokens
– Stuffed Monkey – +2% affection goal for every broken heart token
– The top four items – the two pairs of shoes, monkey, and the appropriate perfume – are the items that I used consistently through my play-through. The next few items I kind of rotated as I unlocked better ones, and experimented a little with the combinations.
– Stuffed Bear – broken heart tokens are converted to passion tokens
– That little bear Kyu gives you at the beginning of the game is useful
– You’ll want that passion to boost your token matches.
– Pink Lily – consume all passion tokens
– This pairs really well with the aforementioned stuffed bear – play the bear and then the lily and you have a big passion boost.
– Hoop Earrings – +1 move for every two broken heart tokens
– Every move is precious in those later dates, so getting extra is very helpful.
– Play this, as well as the stuffed monkey, as late in the date as you feel you can, so you can have maximum broken heart tokens on the board, for maximum benefit.
– Pearl Necklace – drains sentiment and gives 1% affection goal for each 1 sentiment drained
– I started with the bear and lily, and eventually switched to the hoop earrings and pearl necklace.
Date strategy
– Now that you have these date items, here is how to approach the dates:
– If you can match joy/bell tokens, do it. Always. This takes priority over any other move if it is available.
– Match some sentiment tokens as soon as you can – you will need at least three sentiment to start using date items.
– If you get your date drunk before the date she will come in with some sentiment at the start – something that I forgot to take advantage of in my play-through, and I imagine would have reduced my failed dates (and game resets) considerably.
– The shoes and perfume are early game items that you want to play as soon as you can. You will have to take a look at the board and see what will be the best way to earn sentiment the fastest, and the order you play the three will vary depending on what you have to work with on the board.
– Is there a clear match-4 that you can play immediately? Play the suede boots – you’ll get the sentiment you used to pay for them immediately
– How many passion matches are available right away? If it’s significant enough, then play the pink mary janes.
– When playing either pair of shoes, you want to see if you can make up that sentiment payment to get them quickly, as you want to play the perfume as early as possible – possibly before one or both of the pairs of shoes even. The increase of the girl’s favorite token type will increase your opportunities to make matches both in choice and in falls, making a huge difference in being able to succeed in your dates.
– The rest of your items will be end game items – items that you will play within the last few or couple turns of your date. I tend to avoid matching broken hearts, and essentially end up hording them to use to my advantage late in the date by using date gifts that give me bonuses for them, or convert them to a more desirable token.
– The stuffed monkey or hoop earrings are always the first items that you should be playing – likely at having 1-3 turns remaining. Turn those broken hearts into benefit.
– there are two directions that you can go in from here.
– You can go stuffed monkey for affection increase, stuffed bear to turn the tokens into affection, and then pink lily to consume all of the affection tokens; the consume all of the broken hearts method.
– This combination works a bit better with one or two more turns than you would otherwise so that you have time to make additional moves if you need to, so in the range of moves 1-5 remaining.
– This combination is what I used earlier, before getting the hoop earrings.
– OR
– With one or two moves left, play the hoop earrings to increase moves. Take those extra moves, get to one or two left and play stuffed monkey to increase affection off those maximum broken heart tokens, and then with definitely only one turn left play the pearl necklace, which will drain whatever sentiment that you have remaining and likely win you the match.
– This item set up is built to get you maximum affection off of maximum broken hearts and sentiment. The two pairs of shoes are actually great at building up a nice pool of sentiment for the pearl necklace at the end.
– Keep in mind that mid-date you want to maximize all matches of your date’s favorite token type, and avoid making matches of their least favorite that are not either paired with another match or from a fall match. Paying attention to their favorite and least favorite tokens will maximize the affection you earn.
– Their character info will tell you which these are, and in case you forget, you can check that tab on the Huniebee at any time during your date.
– Also keep in mind that as the title of the achievement suggests, luck is involved here, and sometimes you are just handed a crappy board for a date. Anticipate some failure and needing to reset the game and try again. (As soon as you know you have failed the date, immediately close the game, before it can save, which will occur after the girl tells you off and before you return to whatever location you had met her). If you had rearranged date items before the date make sure that you do so again before starting the date again.
Conclusion
So, sleep with all three of the girls you selected and the achievement will unlock.
