The Witcher 2 - Steam Cloud Savegames FIX for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

The Witcher 2 – Steam Cloud Savegames FIX

Overview

Disable the Steam Cloud Storage from the game and enable savegames in the original DocumentsWitcher 2gamesaves folder.

Introduction

This Guide will help you to solve a problem with the Steam Cloud Storage option of The Witcher 2: Assassin Of Kings.

In case you have enabled the Steam Cloud option in the game’s menu, you might have noticed that even if you set it to disabled, the game will continue to save and load gamesaves from Steam Cloud. With this guide you will learn how to delete the files from the Steam Cloud (With a method that works for every game, not only Witcher 2) and how to make The Witcher 2 save and load from the original “DocumentsWitcher 2gamesaves” folder

I – Preparation

Before you start, make sure to have:

  • Notepad++ installed on your PC.
  • set the Steam Cloud enabled from the game’s menu.
  • set the Steam Cloud enabled from Steam’s game properties.

Now you have to do a backup of all The Witcher 2 savegame files you need (You could backup only the most recent save or all the saves as well). If you have saved the game after the activation of the Steam Cloud, then the most recent save is located in: InstallationFolderSteamuserdataUserID20920remote
Select all the files you need and copy them on your desktop or wherever you want (DO NOT DELETE THEM FROM THE REMOTE FOLDER)

II – Getting Ready To Delete The Files

NOTE: To delete files from the Steam Cloud you cannot just delete them from the remote directory, otherwise Steam will download them once again. You have to modify them from the inside first, that’s how to do it.

If you have it opened, close Steam and go back to the InstallationFolderSteamuserdataUserID20920remote folder. Open a gamesave file (ex. ManualSave_0001.sav) with Notepad++. Select all the content by Right-Clicking the text, then choose “Select All” and delete all the text content. Now save the file without renaming it. The edited file should now weight 0Kb.
Repeat this operation for all the files in the folder.

Now that all the files weight 0Kb, go to the InstallationFolderSteamuserdataUserID20920 and delete the remotecache.vdf file.

Start Steam and in Witcher 2’s game status should appear “Sync Conflict”.

III – Delete The Files Stored In The Cloud

Now that Steam reports “Sync Conflict” for The Witcher 2, go to InstallationFolderSteamuserdataUserID20920 and delete both the “Remote” folder and remotecache.vdf

Go back to the Steam Library and launch The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings. Before the game will actually launch, Steam will try to synchronize the remote folder with Steam Cloud; do not worry about it, if you have done everything correct, no files will be synced.

Once the game is started, disable the Steam Cloud from in-game, quit the game, disable the Steam Cloud from Steam’s game properties and close Steam.

Now go to InstallationFolderSteamuserdataUserID and delete the folder “20920”

IV – Resetting The Original Saving Path

Now that no more gamesave files for The Witcher 2 are stored in your Steam Cloud, you need to restore the original saving path : “DocumentsWitcher 2gamesaves”

Copy the gamesave files whose you have made a backup earlier in the folder mentioned before (I suggest you to copy just the most recent file so you will save disk space and to rename it to ManualSaveAutoSaveQuickSave_0001.sav).

Now go to “DocumentsWitcher 2” and open User.ini with notepad. You will find a line saying:

“[FileSystem]
CloudStorage=true”

Change it to:

“[FileSystem]
CloudStorage=false”

Now the game will always look for gamesaves in the original folder and, unless you activate Steam Cloud again, will always save into that folder.
