The Ultimate Anti Lag Guide!

Overview

In this guide I give REAL tips and tricks regarding your system and its performance in relation to gaming!Windows users only***Windows 10 users may not be able to apply these settings as stated below due to changes in some key programs. users who figure out how to apply settings or find settings dont work for them on windows 10 please comment below and know im looking into the matter further.** i lost internet access for quite some time but will get around to updating this with a host of new performance tweaks that span the range of your internet experience rather then just specific games

Gaming and your PC

This guide is intended for users who use their computer systems for GAMING only, in it i will attempt to help users set up their computer systems for gaming by “cutting the fat” that is windows, we will be going into great detail over every facet of your system thats easily modified with the end result being wide spread performance upgrades for all games in all respects 😀

please posts tips below and i will test them out.

This Guide will Modify the following. (some in development currently)

– your computer firewall(s) and your routers firewall(s)
– your wireless communications settings
– your browser functionality (firefox)
– your windows registry
– your windows services and other services
– the way your computer boots up and how it behaves when idle
– your graphics settings (integrated or otherwise)
– background windows tweeks
– lower the overhead on your cpu
– increase the amount of memory and cpu power available to your gaming application.
– how to decrease the type of graphics being applied to an application (steam or otherwise)
(dxd and opengl supported)

– final tips and tricks about gaming performance as well as community donated.

you will see massive improvements to “fps” “ping” and system responsiveness. i will also have a list of links which i call the “kit”. with a few simple programs that will help keep your system running smooth.

you will lose your ability to protect your system from viruses and hackers, while being able to clean the infection when/if one happens.

(apon great reflection i have decided not to get into how to overclock your systems with a bios due to the extreme risk of irreversable damage but will include a link in the extra’s section.)

The Obvious.

Okay to get this out of the way for the sake of the comments section.

You can improve your frames per second (the amount of images displayed on your monitor per second) by lowering all your graphics settings in game. you can increase it more by going into windowed mode using a very low resolution. (screen size)

If you are getting over 120 FPS I recommend trying V-sync as it will reduce whatever load may be on your graphics card by limiting your FPS to your monitors maximum refresh rate (typically 60-120fps) freeing up your gpu to render more visually demanding graphics or lowering the overall load in hopes that it cools your gpu

( most gpu target temperature range is 85C, low end gpu might render a game at full graphics settings with no visual lag but please take the time to ensure that you are not overheating your gpu. gpu run at the 95-100C range MAXIMUM, at those temperatures your odds of overheating are good without proper cooling. temps available in your gpu control program )

Disclaimer!! Must read!!

While I personally have tested and am currently running every single tweak listed in this guide…

I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT YOU WONT BREAK YOUR COMPUTER BUT SO LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IT SHOULD BE PERFECTLY SAFE. IF YOUR BOX EXPLODES DO NOT COME CRYING TO ME.

with that said…..

these fixes will help you not only with online games but offline games as well.

players with fixes for OS other then windows 7 or windows 8 please post a comment with the recommendation but note that i will add it to a guide section and remove the comment from the comments section, you will recieve credit for your assistance.

System Performance Kit

Below are a number of links that will begin downloads for a few programs.

1. CCleaner
a small program from piriform that will remove broken registry settings and clean the garbage from your computer improving its speed overall as well as help you disable pesky windows services and start up programs that you can manually enable when needed.

2. Defraggler
a slightly more effective defragmentation program then the windows standard, you should run the defragmenter last and every few weeks depending on your average downloads.

3. malwarebytes antimalware (trial)
the trial comes with a fully featured and functional virus and malware removal tool which is going to replace your existing system defence entirely (system defence is important and i cannot recommend disabling all of it, but you will get massive performance boosts being unrestricted. recommended for pure gamers)

( please google these if your running a 32 bit system and consider upgrading asap 😀 )

CPU Performance Tweek [1]

This simple tweek to your windows should improve your performance slightly by changing how windows handles your active and background tasks. this tweek is 100% safe to apply and i recommend doing so on any gaming rig.

(NOTE THAT YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN AS ADMIN TO MAKE CHANGES THAT WILL APPLY TO ALL COMPUTER USERS)

step [1]
– click start then right click “Computer” and select properties.

step [2]
– in the window that pops up, on the left side is a small list of links, click on advanced system settings.

step [3]
– a system properties window should open, click on the advanced tab and then click the settings button in the performance section

step [4]
– click the adjust for best performance setting in the visual effects tab in your performance options window. this will remove all the flashy windows graphics and details leaving you with something that looks alot like windows 95, press apply.
(see bottom for alternative step 4, not as effective)

step [5]
– click on the advanced tab of the performance options window then, under adjust for best performance of, click “programs” and apply.

step [6]
– this is not a tweek but if your “virtual memory” is below 4000mb please change it to 6135MB so that windows can make better use if your HDD for those background tasks.

click apply and close to complete this tweek and enjoy your cpu performance boost.

ALTERNATIVE STEP 4.1
– click the adjust for best performance setting in the visual effects tab in your performance options window. this will remove all the flashy windows graphics and details leaving you with something that looks alot like windows 95. there is a large list of clickables on the bottom find the one labled “Use visual styles on windows and buttons” and tick it back on, this will enable the “skins” used on your window bars/start bar ect.

(visual effects use the themes service on windows and as such themes can be disabled if you are not using them (i.e best performance step 4)

(Editor note, upload windows 7 pictures)

CPU Performance Tweek [2]

NOTE THAT THIS STEP MAY LEAVE YOUR SYSTEM WITH NO ACTIVE DEFENCES ON BOOT AND THAT YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO TURN THEM ON MANUALLY.

this step will modify what windows starts up when you first turn your computer on, in doing this we can turn off many programs that would hog up your valuable system resources which could be better spent on gaming! you will notice SIGNIFICANT speed ups to how fast windows starts after being shut down and this step is considered low risk to the user due to the notice above.

NOTE FOR WINDOWS 8+
[ Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 make it really simple to disable startup applications. All you have to do is open up Task Manager by right-clicking on the Taskbar, or using the CTRL + SHIFT + ESC shortcut key, clicking “More Details,” switching to the Startup tab, and then using the Disable button. ]

step [1]
– press the windows key+R to bring up the run window

step [2]
– type “MSconfig” into your windows run box and press enter.

step [3]
– a system configuration window will open, select the services tab

step [4]
– click the “hide all microsoft services” ticker, located at the bottom left usually. after its active click “disable all” and his apply.

step [5]
– click the start up tab, located to the right of the services tab, and disable all settings in there too. then apply.

when you click okay after applying your new settings a dialog box displays telling you that you may need to restart your computer for the changes to take affect. Click Restart to restart your computer immediately. If are not ready to restart your computer, click Exit without restart.

now these settings dont change whats currently running on your system, but what will be running when you restart. we have told windows that we dont want to run anything except what is needed to bring the computer to a playable state from power off.

Shutdown and then turn on your computer and enjoy the massive performance boost (depending on amount of backware running

Network Performance Tweek [1]

Note – each tweek to your system is optional and can be performed selectively.

Optimal System Configurations will require you to load a cmd prompt in administrator mode, to do this go to start>all programs>accessories and right click on command prompt and select run as administrator.

leave the command window open for now and press the windows key (bottom left) and R together. this opens the windows run. please leave both of these open before starting.

[1] Open Device manager. to do this select the windows run dialog box and type ” devmgmt.msc “

you should see something that looks like this more or less…

now select network adapters, if your using a wired internet connection right click and disable all your wireless adaptors as your simply not using it (not recommended on laptops)

(if your using wireless start here)

right click your wireless LAN card (or similarly named) and select properties, click on the “advanced” tab. regardless of how many settings you have please adjust only the following property values

– Multimedia/Gaming Environment should be set to “enabled”

– Power Saving Mode should be set to “CAM” or otherwise disabled

-Adhoc support 802.11n should be disabled. If you have issues you can turn it back on.

(if your using wired start here, wireless should also continue on with these steps)

right click your PCIe network adaptor (or the one that says something other then wireless) and select properties, then move over to the advanced tab and change the following settings only.

-ARP Offload should be Enabled

-Auto Disable Gigabit should be Disabled

-Energy Efficient Ethernet should be Disabled

-Flow Control should be Disabled (enable if your browser internet becomes “stuttery” due to low overall network speed)

-Green Ethernet should be Disabled

-Interrupt Moderation should be Enabled

-Priority & VLAN should both be enabled.

-Speed & Duplex should be 1.0Gbps Full Duplex or your highest full duplex

simply hit okay and your done and you may close your device manager.

Network Performance Tweek [2]

Windows 7 only

go to your command prompt and simple type the following line into it

netsh int tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp

it will respond with ok if the feature is supported.

** some windows 8 users have repoted this working, please try and know there is no risk if its not supported.

Network Performance Tweek [3]

Imagine an airline service, transporting each passenger in an individual plane, so that the commuters do not face any delays after arriving at the airport. Does the capacity and resources of any airline company allow that? The true answer is a ‘NO’. Plane would wait for its time to collect certain travelers, and fill in its volume before taking off.

Similar is the case with your computer systems. While sending packets of information on a network, your system realizes the capacity of each packet (plane), and the frequency of data protocol (passengers) to be conveyed. To reduce the overall network load, data is accumulated until the volume of each packet is occupied. This accumulation of data causes lag, in result of which, the user may have to wait for a while. This entire process is administered by a Windows component, called Nagle-Algorithm.

Nagle-Algorithm is enabled by default in Windows 7 and its successive versions. Above and beyond its convenience, Nagle-Algorithm may lead to a dissatisfied user. There are activities that may require a much quicker response, for example, online games. To address such a situation, this article entraps a tip to disable Nagle-Algorithm. It is to get a free flow of data protocol through the network, so as to elevate the speed of internet operations. Before moving further, you first need to identify the appropriate NIC Interface.

NIC Interface

A computer may have multiple internet connections. For each connection, Windows Registry creates a separate NIC Interface or NIC-ID. This ID is displayed in the form of cryptic combination of letters and numbers, enclosed in braces. To recognize the appropriate NIC-ID, need to acquire the IP address of your current or active internet connection.

Type ‘CMD’ in the search box and hit Enter to open Command Prompt
On the black screen, type ‘IPCONFIG’ and press Enter to view info on your active connection
Locate and note down your IP address, displayed next to IPv4 Address, under Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection
Exit Command Prompt
How to Check My IP Address

Disabling Nagle-Algorithm

Nagle-Algorithm can be disabled with a simple registry modification. Please be advised to remember the IP address, noted in the above steps. For a subsequent practice, see the following steps.

Type ‘REGEDIT’ in the search box and hit Enter to open Windows Registry Editor
In the left pane, expand through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to reach the following key
SYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesTcpipParametersInterfaces
This key may contain several NICs, depending upon the number of internet connections you have used. To disable Nagle-Algorithm of the correct internet profile, you need to access the correct NIC-ID. For this purpose, click each interface key and find and match the IP address with the one noted in the previous section, in the right pane of Registry Editor. It is likely to exist within a string Value, named ‘IPAddress’ or ‘DhcpIPAddress’.

How to Disable NAgle Algorithem in Registry

When found, stay in the same key, and in the left panel of registry editor

Right click the empty place, and choose New to create two DWORD Values
Rename these values as ‘TcpAckFrequency’ (sending out packets immediately)
and ‘TCPNoDelay’ (Disabling Nagle-Algorithm)
Double click both the entries to Modify
Put 1 as their Value data to activate them, and click OK to save your changes
Close Registry Editor, and Restart your Computer
Tweak Registry to Speed up Internet

Note

It is to inform that Nagle-Algorithm is an essential Windows tool, and needs to be reactivated for a proficient piece of work. A permanently disabled Nagle-Algorithm may have a visible influence on your regular bandwidth. Once you are done with your work, reverse this setting by changing the data of two newly created values to 0.
