Rage stopped working on windows 10 with AMD [SOLVED]

Overview

Bought Rage in a Steam sale and it does not start? I was in the same boat but solved it, so I thought I’d share the solution.

Update: AMD 17.15.1 Fixes the problem

Confirmed on 11-may-2017. With version 17.15.1 of the Radeon Software drivers Rage can be played normally.

Crash details

I bought Rage in a Steam Sale in december 2016 and wanted to play it on my “decent enough to play an old game” system.

But all I got was an error “Rage stopped working”…

I googled for hours and tried various methods described all over the internet, but to no avail. I knew it must have something to do with the graphics driver, because the Windows Event Viewer told this:

The Solution

Thanks to this post[community.amd.com] I found out that the AMD version 17.4.2 (the version I had) will crash Rage.

I downloaded and installed version 17.4.1 and voila, Rage works right out of the box. As a precaution I disabled all AMD enhancements in the AMD Rage profile.
