Chapter 4: Links

Technologies:

Technologies represent new scientific advancements or inventions for your civilization. Each technology you research unlocks new buildings, units, or other advancements, and expands the power of your nation. Technologies are developed through a continuous research process, the key to which is the Science stat. However, they can also be “hurried” through Eureka moments.

Civics:

Civics are a new concept in Civilization VI. They encompass a civilization’s philosophical and ideological progression, allowing for a player to concentrate on things like cultural development and diplomacy instead of just researching the latest military tech.

Religion:

Religion is a feature in Civilization VI, but its role has been greatly expanded both in scope and in importance, becoming the focus of a new victory condition. Religion is primarily based around the Faith stat, which you can gain through various means including buildings, Wonders and others.

Cities:
  • Housing:

City growth is also controlled by Housing, a new concept in the game which represents the habitation and sanitation infrastructure of the city and puts an upper limit on how many Citizens the city is really able to support. Beyond the initial bonus conferred by the availability of Fresh water, Housing usually depends on city development (improvements, districts and other infrastructure).

  • Amenities:

The Amenities6 Amenities situation in the city may also affect Growth: having more Amenities than necessary boosts growth, while having less diminishes it. However, in practice the main constraint to growth remain Civ6Food Food and Housing6 Housing; unless the Amenities situation becomes so bad that the city enters the Revolt phase; however growth will be the least of your problems then.

  • Loyalty:

In Rise and Fall, Loyalty may also affect growth, and much more severely than Amenities. If the Loyalty score of a city falls below 76, growth will be affected; if below 26 growth will stop completely! Of course, such situations are quite rare in the game, so most of the time Loyalty won’t matter at all (unlike Amenities, which are much more fluent).

City-States:

A city-state is an AI-controlled entity that represents a small independent nation which does not compete for victory. A City-State cannot build new cities and does little of what full civilizations do: it builds units for defense purposes, it will explore the map with ships only, but apart of that it will mostly keep to itself. However, it interacts with all civilizations in the game and confers special benefits to those with which it has friendly relations. It may also develop special relationship with a single civilization (called here a Suzerain), on whose behalf it will do almost everything, even go to war when its patron does.
