Overview
Just bought the game? Still don’t know how the game works? Well, this guide shows you the important steps you need to take in the first few turns of the game to achieve victory.
Choosing the Correct Settling Spot
When choosing where to settle your capital, it’s crucial to keep track of these 3 tactical advantages:
- Is there a source of water such as a river or lake?
- What is the base yield of the tiles around you?
- What resources are on and next to the tile you want to settle?
And then there are optional settling factors that could be very helpful, but only if you are close enough to settle in 1 or 2 turns:
- Are there nearby natural wonders?
- Is there a mountain range next to the tile you want to settle?
- What is the defense and movement modifiers of your selected tile and nearby tiles?
Early Production, Technology, and Civic Path
After you settle your capital the first thing you want to produce is a scout. Producing a scout is important in finding tribal villages which give you a boost early on. It also gives you a chance to meet other leader early on whilst scouting out the location of your next city. And as an optional strategy, if there are no nearby threats, you can send out your starter warrior to scout out land the opposite direction you sent out your scout.
When it comes to science, you should choose the tech that most suits the tiles you settled on and near. For example, if your capital is next to stone you should research mining. Also, try to choose research tasks that have the shortest time to completion.
At the beginning of the game you automatically have to complete the Code of Laws civic. After that is finished you have a choice between Craftsmanship and Foreign Trade. The only way to choose one or the other is circumstance. If you have found a city-state nearby choose Foreign Trade, if you have not, choose Craftsmanship and mass produce builders with that 30%+ builder production.
