Modern guide for GOTHIC 2 setup (HD textures, DX11) + linux proton

Overview

Setup the game using the best tools/plugins/textures available at the moment.

Intro

Hey there, fellow old school gamer!

This guide will walk you through setup and configuration of this legendary game on modern system.

As result you will have Gothic 2 with beautiful textures, lots of bugs and inconveniences fixed and even new rendering with directX 11.

No crazy stuff, just maximum quality with vanilla flavor. But you can always add something, ‘cos this build is totally compatible with everything else.

Distinct Proton setup instruction for Linux lovers as a bonus(yeah, with dx11).

Basic installation and setup

1. Install Gothic 2 steam version

2. Install Steamfix (choose russian or international version). Apply 4gb patch!

3. Put this beautiful texture pack[www.nexusmods.com] into game’s Data folder.

4. Put new weapon models[www.nexusmods.com] into game’s Data folder (use only G2 version)

5. Click on the latest release here[github.com] (use avx version if your CPU is newer than 2011). Put it in game’s System folder.

Now when you have everything put together it’s time to apply some tweaks to make gaming experience even better.

WARNING: use script fix version in launcher for better gaming experience!

Tweaks

1. Open system/SystemPack.ini and change following parameters:

DisableLOD=1
SPAWN_INSERTRANGE=9500.0
SPAWN_REMOVERANGE=10000.0
OutDoorPortalDistanceMultiplier=300
InDoorPortalDistanceMultiplier=300
DrawDistanceMultiplier=2
FPS_Limit=60

It will render world and NPCs twice the distance, disable LOD and possible portal flickering, limit fps, so game wont eat your laptop’s battery.

2. Open system/Gothic.ini and change following parameter:

useQuickSaveKeys=1

Now you can use F5/F9 to save/load.

3. I highly recommend to use Union plugins:

QuickLoot[worldofplayers.ru] will drastically improve your looting experience and speed. Put file in game’s Data directory. Use V or RMB to quickloot(configurable).

AlterDamage[worldofplayers.ru] will make fighting more interesting and deadly. I prefer to set RequiredAttrScaling=1

All custom plugins configurations go to system/Gothic.ini

4. To configure DX11 you can invoke config window with F11 or Ctrl+F11 for advances settings. Cook according to your taste.
To turn off DX11 and go back to DX7 just rename file ddraw.ddl in system directory.

Final words

That’s it, folks! Now you can dive into unforgettable world of Gothic and have fun!

PS I want to say THANK YOU to every modder and artist! To everyone who has made this guide possible and gave us opportunity to experience this great game on the next level!

Bonus: Guide for linux users

1. Set proton as compatibility in game properties(6.3 in my case), turn off steam input and overlay.

2. Install protontricks[github.com]

3. Make sure that you have DXVK on your system

4. Install libraries with protontricks:

– run protontricks –gui –no-bwrap in your terminal
– select gothic2 in dropdown menu
select default wine prefix -> install windows dll

You will need this to run game properly:
– directmusic
– vcrun2010
dxvk Proton should use DXVK by default for dx11 renderer.

5. Change dll configurations:

– run protontricks –gui –no-bwrap in your terminal
– select gothic2 in dropdown menu
select default wine prefix -> run winecfg
– select Libraries tab

On this tab add libraries overrides one by one:
– MSVCR100.DLL
– MSVCR110.DLL
– MSVCR120.DLL
– MSVCR140.DLL
– DSOUND.DLL and change it to (builtin, native)
– DDRAW.DLL (native, builtin)

Now your game should run with music and DX11 just like windows version. Have fun!
