An up-to-date modding guide for KotOR, created with compatibility in mind. Always updated when new compatible mods are released.

KotOR in Widescreen, HD Menus, and Remastered Cutscenes

Please note there is a lot of information to absorb here, and I’ve attempted to write the guide in a way that most users would understand, if something confuses you, be sure to leave a comment, and I’ll do my best to help you out!

Note: It’s important for you to make sure that Windows Global Scaling Value is set to 100% otherwise the game will break when using the Widescreen Modifications below. Right click on Desktop > Display Settings > Scaling and set your global scaling to 100%.

Widescreen Patch

The Steam Version of KOTOR is encrypted and will not work properly with the Widescreen Patcher without a crack. Use this one and replace in your game folder: [link]

Widescreen Patch – Install Steps
1. Run the Utility
2. Choose your game installation folder (not the override)
3. From the drop down menu, select Star Wars: KotOR (1024×768) and write in the boxes your resolution, then click Patch!

Run swconfig.exe: set the resolution to the highest, refresh rate to 60 (or higher if you have that option), Texture pack to high, make sure none of the check-boxes are checked except hardware mouse and V-Sync and finally click apply.

Next, you need to edit your swkotor.ini. Scroll down to [Graphics Options] and change the width and height to match your monitor resolution. Ex: Width=2560 and Height=1440.

Installation
1. Copy the gui files from one of the ratio folders that match your monitor resolution and drop all 81 items into your override folder.
2. Copy hires_patcher.bat, hires_patcher.exe, and hires_patcher.pl to your game directory folder (the one with the exe, not the override) and run hires_patcher.bat
3. Follow the instructions to patch your swkotor executable (As follows without parenthesis: Width, Height, No, swkotor.exe, and then your done)

Note: If you’re playing in 768p you need to say ‘yes’ to letterbox adjustments otherwise your game will not work correctly. If you’re experiencing issues with the dialogue and you are not running the game in 768p, say ‘yes’ anyway as this fixed the game for some users. (No capitals)

Copy all the .tga files to your override folder except: the ones that start with po_ (they’re portraits that will be covered by another mod) and the one with – copy at the end of it.

Download the resolution you’ve patched your executable to (or close to, if it’s not available). Drop the .biks into your movies folder (say yes to overrwrite).

Dialogue Fixes, Manual Installs, Expansion Mods, Community Patch

Please note that any mod that makes use of the TSLPatcher includes a .ini file that you can edit so it points to your directory so you don’t need to browse for your directory every time.

Here’s how to do that
In the tslpatcher folder, open the .ini (usually called changes.ini, but sometimes if the installer is split, it might be called something else) and look for the lines:

LookupGameFolder=
LookupGameNumber=

Replace the numbers on the end so they are as follows:

LookupGameFolder=1
LookupGameNumber=1

To utilize these methods, make sure your registry points to the current/correct path of your game folder. Open Regedit (type in search), and navigate to

Double click on path and paste your game directory location here. If there isn’t one, right click and choose “Create String Value” and call it path. Double click and paste your game directory location.
