Overview
Find out the zombie fiction references behind SE: Nazi Zombie Army’s achievement names!
Introduction
Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army features quite a few zombie fiction references with their achievement names. After reading through them I noticed several and decided to compile a list for anyone else who might be curious about all these wacky achievement names. While quite a few are references there were several that were either just puns, not references at all, or possibly just went over my head. I’ve listed those in the final section. The rest are grouped by the films or books that they are from. Enjoy!
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
I’m coming to get you Barbara!
Modified version of Johnny’s famous line in the graveyard, “They’re coming to get you Barbara!” A version of this line is also later used in Shaun of the Dead.
They’re all messed up
Part of the Sheriff McClelland’s description of the dead to a reporter, “Yeah, they’re dead. They’re all messed up.”
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
We got this by the ass!
Part of Roger’s line to Peter while blocking off the mall. “We got this, man! We got this by the ass!”
No More Room in Hell
Part of Peter’s explanation for why there are zombies. “When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth.”
I have given them the last Reichs
A variation of a line delivered by the old priest in the apartment complex. “I have given them the last rites. Now, you do what you will. You are stronger than us. But soon, I think they be stronger than you. When the dead walk, señores, we must stop the killing… or lose the war.”
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Send…More…Paramedics..
In The Return of the Living Dead the zombies talk. After the zombies kill a pair of paramedics a zombie crawls in the ambulance and uses the radio to order more uttering the classic line, “Send…More…Paramedics..” Later another zombie orders more cops.
Your blood pressure is zero over zero.
Two characters haven been exposed to 2-4-5 Trioxin and are slowly turning into zombies. The paramedics examining them are baffled and explain their findings. “You have no pulse, your blood pressure’s zero-over-zero, you have no pupillary response, no reflexes and your temperature is 70 degrees.”
Dead Alive / Braindead (1992)
You got rid of those stiffs yet?
Lionel’s Uncle Les inquires whether he’s got rid of the increasing number of zombies that Lionel is trying to keep under control. “You got rid of those stiffs yet? I don’t know what sort of kinky ♥♥♥♥ you’re into, but I want those things buried.”
Army of Darkness (1992)
..My BOOMSTICK
Ash has just owned both deadites and knights with his shotgun before uttering these famous words to explain his shotgun: “Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This… is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart’s top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That’s right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It’s got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That’s right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?”
Groovy
This line appears first in Evil Dead 2 but Ash says it again in Army of Darkness. In both instances Ash has just finished tooling up to go take down deadites.
Good, bad, I’m the guy the with gun.
Ash utters these words after defeating Evil Ash for the first time. However, there are multiple versions of this film and Ash only says this line in the theatrical cut. While this is the version most people are familiar with in other versions he says, “I ain’t that good.”
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Like a drunk who’s lost a bet.
Dianne is trying to explain to everyone the sort of look they will need in order to effectively pretend to be zombies. She explains the look as follows: “Just look at the face: it’s vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who’s lost a bet.”
Don’t mention the Z word!
Shaun and Ed have a conversation earlier in the film where Ed uses the word Zombies. The exchanges goes as follows.
Ed: Any Zombies out there?
Shaun: Don’t say that!
Ed: What?
Shaun: That!
Ed: What?
Shaun: The zed-word. Don’t say it!
Ed: Why not?
Shaun: Because it’s ridiculous!
Later after this exchange someone else uses the word Zombie to which Ed replies, “We’re not using the zed-word!”
While neither quote is exactly the line, “Don’t mention the Z word”, they were both close enough that I figured it was worth including in this section. On a broader scale, this is referencing how George Romero’s original Dead trilogy never use the Z word despite being considered by most people as the most definitive zombie films.
I ran it under a cold tap.
Shaun’s dad is bitten by a zombie but he doesn’t understand exactly what that means yet. When others make a fuss about it he responds with, “I’m quite all right, Barbara, I ran it under a cold tap.”
You’ve got red on you
This line is uttered multiple times to Shaun during the film. It occurs more innocently from a broken pen and later on after Shaun’s gotten some zombie blood on him.
Monster Island: A Zombie Novel (2006)
I will not negotiate with the Undead
Unfortunately, I have never read this book and I’m not sure of the context but multiple sources confirm that it’s from this novel.
28 Weeks Later (2007)
Have you come in contact with…the infected?
Scarlet asks this question of Alice after they find her outside of the safe zone.
Puns & Sources Unknown
While a good portion of the achievement in this game are references to other zombie fiction, they don’t all seem to be. Here are the remaining achievements.
Explosive Personality
The Preacher says BOOM!
Resurrect This!
Resurrection Day
Play it Thule
The pen is mightier than the sidearm
Soul Survivor
Nazi Army Gold
Bottles of Blood
