Shelter 2 Guide

Lynx Mother Achivement Guide for Shelter 2

Lynx Mother Achivement Guide

Overview

I’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t have the Lynx Mother achievement. Only 0.9% have it.So I’ve created a guide on my experience when I played on survival mode to get it.It might not be 100% accurate since this is one of my first guides but I hope it helps.

Activating Survival Mode and Basics

First off is how to activate survival mode.
By going into your settings in the main menu and then clicking on gameplay, you can see the survival mode option beneath the lynx skin options. It’s recommended to have the mountains DLC threats disabled if you want to pass through it without too much of a challenge.
I’d also recommend having cub communication enabled.
Avoid the tundra area if you wish to not experience any predators coming after you and your babies and making things harder.

Next choose which one of your babies you want to pass on the line. So to start off
-Sensing the environment drains a bit of your stamina
-When you run your stamina runs out faster than in normal mode
-Prey spawns much less frequently than in normal mode
You’ll first start off in the den area where you’ll need to catch prey for your young. In survival mode your lynx doesn’t auto crouch when near to prey, instead you’ll need to press the crouch button, (by default is ctrl). You can use the period where your cubs are in the den to experiment how close you can get to them before they run away.
After your cubs are well enough to leave the den, from then on just hunt rabbits and voles across your path. Rabbits normally spawn in the quantity of 1-5. It’s better to go for the clumps of them huddled together, as you run into them, head to where 2+ of them run off too, as soon as you catch one right click and go for another one. I’d rather hunt in grasslands instead of the woodland and tundra as it’s easier to spot prey and no trees block the path.

Types of Prey

Voles-

Cubs fed- 1
Comes out during spring/summer/autumn. (I’ve heard that they come out during winter too but I’ve not seen any so far.)
It is harder for them to detect you, you can hear some squeaking mouse-like noises when one spawns and if they run into a burrow in the ground they despawn , and they spawn from those burrows. Most likely they’re the ones running into your mouth.

Frogs-
Cubs fed -1
Comes out nearby lakes or rivers in swampy areas, you are unable to scent them by sense so you’ll need to see them and they’re easy enough to hear. Most likely they just jump unexpectingly into your jaws.

Rabbits-
Cubs fed- 2
Spawns everywhere in a cluster of 1-5. Fast but generally easy to catch. Browns are hard to see during autumn but stick out like a leaf during winter, whites are hard to see during winter but are easy to spot in spring/summer/autumn.
Like stated in section 1,just run into a cluster and catch two of those fluffy things and your cubs would be set.

Pheasant-
Cubs fed- 3
Spawns in wooded area and spots you faster than any other prey if you’re not crouched. It gives a coarse bird call sound when it’s nearby. When they start to fly you’ll need to jump in order to catch them, pinning them against a rock is better than chasing them into trees.

Deer-
Cubs fed- All
Spawns in the lake area (three trees) and the tundra area(snowflake). Make sure you have at least 50% of stamina before chasing them. You’ll need to make sure you are behind them and at least 1 lynx length away from them or else it’ll sometimes bug out and won’t let you jump onto them.

Eggs-
Cubs fed- All in a small amount
I’m not sure if it was a bug or not but I didn’t find any eggs in the trees that spawned it. Update in the comments if you have information about this. If I’m not mistaken, you can find eggs almost everywhere on the map especially in the lake area.
Can also be in trees that has owls in them.

Threats

The Lonesome Fog-
Spawns in lake area. It’s a big blob that comes inland scaring away all the prey. Your cubs would become paralyzed from fear but while in it all you have to do is stay close to your cubs. It’ll recede soon enough. You can walk off into another area (either the den or the tundra) for it to despawn.

Wolves-
I’ve only encountered them in the tundra area. To avoid them you’ll need to jump on the ledges or rock hills. If not they’ll either go for you or your cubs.
I’ve also heard that they also apear in the den area and that you’ll need to stay inside your den in order to avoid them.

Hawks/Eagles (Mountain DLC)-
They’ll swoop down from the sky and spawns generally everywhere and would catch one of your cubs but your cub will be too heavy for it to leave immediately so you can jump on to it and kill it. It will become prey for your cubs to eat.

Bears/Polar Bears (Mountains DLC)
Just stay away from them. You’ll hear drums when you’re near one and when they charge at you, they’ll take you and one of your cubs down. They spawn up in the mountain and in the tundra areas. You can see them as a large red speck while using your senses.

Foxes (Mountains DLC)
You’ll hear leaves and bushes crackling and your lynx will hiss. The foxes can be chased away by you but it can also be prey for your cubs. It’s relatively easy to hunt down as it walks towards you like an idiot and runs away only when you’re close enough. It’ll grab one of your cubs when you’re not looking but will be slowed down by its weight.

Forest fire/Thunder (Mountains DLC)
The forest fire would occur during the changing from summer to autumn. When this happens you’ll need to run away from your current location and probably go to the nearest water source. I’m still unsure if this is the correct away to avoid it but my cubs has survived when I did it in my last few runs.

*Starvation

Starvation-
Starvation is the main threat in survival mode. I’ve noticed that by communicating (mouse 1) with your cubs, you can spot those who are starving. Those close to starving would produce a weak/soft mewling sound and that their sizes would be smaller compared to their brothers/sisters. One way to identify a cub has eaten or not recently is by the blood on its mouth and paws and also its size. The cubs would grow slightly larger after they’ve eaten.
If a cub is starving it would lay on the ground not moving and would create a pitiful noise. It needs to be fed soon or it’ll die.
Throughout all my runs I’ve made sure to communicate with my cubs frequent enough so that I’ll know which one is likely to be starving.

Adolescent lynx cubs can catch their own food but are also needy mofos dependent of your care. It’s still simple but it’s just that they can catch some more food and that they’re bigger and with less cute noises.

Also you yourself wont starve and your stamina would regain slowly but only till halfway. So in dire situations you can avoid eating at all and concentrate on feeding your cubs to keep them full at all costs.

Thanks for Reading

That’s all for now. I hope you’ve gotten some help out of this.

If I’ve missed anything out post in the comments and I’ll update it 🙂
