Overview
A descriptive guide for those who are getting started in Freeplay or those who want to know more about it.
Intro
So you just discovered the freeplay mode but you don’t know what this is for, what to do and how to play? Then you’ve come to the right place! In this guide I will try my best to explain what you do in freeplay.
Getting started
So you just spawned and the first thing you want to know is how to open your inventory and loot crates. For this you just have to press the TAB key on your keyboard. This allows you to have an overview of your inventory and see any nearby loot that you can pick up. For now you just want to loot. Find weapons, food and anything else that looks useful.
Mechanics and other
In this chapter I will explain the most important mechanics and other things to know about freeplay.
Freeplay has a magazine system. That means individual magazines for weapons have to be loaded with ammunition.
To find the right ammunition in your inventory you can hover over your gun that you want to load with your cursor and it will highlight the ammo (Also works vice versa if you hover over the ammo type).
To load the magazine just drag the ammo onto the magazine or right click the mag that you want to load.
Alternatively if one or both magazines are empty you can reload them by pressing R. If only one is empty make sure the other magazine is loaded into your gun, otherwise it wont work. It will take a few seconds or maybe a minute depending on what size your magazine is.
To take out the bullets of a magazine just left click on it in your inventory. If you want to unload the magazine currently loaded in your gun press T to unload it.
Additional magazines can also be bought in the modifications menu of the gun. You can have up to four magazines in total.
Proning is important if you want to have more cover or if you want to approach something extra sneaky. You can prone by holding Shift+Ctrl (or whatever your buttons are binded to).
It is also possible to upgrade your weapons. For this just click the wrench on the gun that you want to upgrade.
To upgrade your gun you will require “junk”. These are old weapon parts you can find on the map. Once a part is upgraded you can not remove it. It will stay permanently. Switching between modifications will also cost “junk”. As an example when you have a grip but you upgrade to a grenade launcher you will have to pay again to get the grip.
Tip:Don’t add a suppressor to your gun. You need to deal as much damage as possible in Freeplay and a suppressor is useless because either all engagements happen at long range or close range. Scopes that increase your vision distance is important! You wan’t to be able to see as far as you can. Seeing an enemy before he sees you will most certainly save your life.
To call in a airdrop you need to find a flare gun and a green flare. These items spawn randomly in the map. Once you have both items load the flare into the flare gun and launch it into the air.
The helicopter will spawn on the right side of whatever region you are in and will fly to the left side. Depending on how far away you are from the right it might take longer. Warning: Do not launch the flare too close to the map transitions! Crates might get stuck above the transition!
The helicopter will drop 3 crates. In these crates you can find first aid kits, bandages, MREs and hazmat suits. You can also find weapons in them. Following weapons have a chance of spawning: M110, Zastava M76, AK-74, M4A1, M1897, Saiga and grenades.
You also have a personal stash in the “Safezone”. It’s located behind this door.
This crate is your stash. Here you can save everything you want.
But watch out! The stash can only hold 15 KG of items. Currently there is no way to upgrade this.
When it’s night in Freeplay the temparature drops. After some time you will slowly freeze. This is indicated by a snowflake icon and the blue bar growing on top of your health bar.
To warm up you have to make a fire. For that you will need some sticks and some matches or a lighter. Then just stay close to the fire and your healthbar will go back to normal. But watch out, you have to fuel the fire. This can be done by throwing toilet paper, logs or planks into the fire. The fire will stay up for 60 seconds, but by throwing in extra stuff it will burn longer. Toilet paper extends it by 60 seconds, planks by 150 seconds and logs by 300 seconds. Toilet paper you can find in crates. Sticks, logs and planks you find on the ground.
There are also small storms which can also freeze you. At night you can just build another camp fire but during the day you don’t have to, you will warm up again automatically.
To earn money you need to find valuables. These spawn randomly in the map. There are 11 valuables in Freeplay and the “value points” range from 2 all the way to 35.
Once you escaped these “value points” will be added to your account. Everytime you get a certain amount of points you can retrieve some money.
To earn even more money you can compete on the leaderboard. You have to collect and extract with more valuables to ensure your place at the top. The leaderboard is reset everyday just like a normal daily challenge.
Like every human, your character has needs it has to satisfy in order to function properly. These needs include eating, drinking, warmth and not dying of course.
The yellow bar indicates how hungry you are. If you are hungry a small icon displays above your health bar notifying you that you need to eat something. You won’t starve to death but your character will move slower.
The blue bar indicates thirst. The lower it is, the thirstier you are. Just like with the hunger, you will not die of thirst, but just slower.
The white bar indicates your body temperature. Self explanatory, the lower the bar is, the faster you’ll freeze.
The (currently) grey bar indicates how irradiated you are. Always try to keep it at 0. You can detect radiation with a geiger counter. But if you aren’t sure if radiation is around, just keep an eye on the bar. Radiation can be lowered by drinking alcohol or taking anti-radiation pills. If the bar hits 100 you will die immediatly.
You can also team up with people you meet in Freeplay. To do that you have to press F1. This will make your blue box above your head turn yellow indicating that you are willing to team up.
Once you teamed up with someone it will notify you in the chat. You will be able see the person’s healthbar in the top left. But watch out, don’t go too far away from your new friend, otherwise you will get a notification that you have broken team with that person.
Escaping
One of the most important things in freeplay is escaping. You can find escape points in a lot of locations. The escape points all look the same. A old broken down door. Just go to it, press E and escape. Escaping takes a few seconds but after that you are safe.
Once you escape you will land in a small room with a computer in it. Just go to the computer and press E. That way you end your “expedition” and all the quests you have done will be completed. After that either quit freeplay or continue through the door on the left to go back into freeplay.
Safezone
This is the “safezone”. No one here is able to shoot you. But you are not entirely safe from your responsibilities. Don’t jump down too high or you might break your legs and keep in mind you still have to eat and drink. Other than that the safezone features the stash in the warehouse and a bar to the right (currently no in-game use). You can manage your inventory and maybe make a new friend for your adventure.
Consumable items
Here I will list various consumables and their effects. Effects range from nourishing your hunger all the way to removing radiation poisoning. Note that all food items (except water, energy drinks, whisky, vodka and liquor) also replenish health.

Locations (city)
In this chapter I will feature every location. The layout is always the same for all three regions – city, forest, swamp – and I will list the locations from left to right (west to east). It is a good idea to memorize locations for easy navigation.
This is the “left transition”. This part of the map connects the “right transition”. Going through one of the doors will spawn you at the right side of the city.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the “fire station”. It features two exit points. One in a room in the house and one in the basement. Other than that this location doesn’t bear any significance.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: one in the house and one in the basement
This is the “bus station”. As the name implies this is a bus station. Lots of crates to loot and one exit point in the basement of the hut.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: one in the basement of the hut.
This is the first “forest transition”. As the name implies it functions as a transition point between the city and the forest.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the “school”. A small abandoned learning institution. Other than a few crates and a wagon this location doesn’t bear any importance.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the “bridge”. A location with a few crates and a lot of radiation. Pass through quickly and don’t hang around or you might have a chance of growing a second head.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: None
These are the “garages”. This is where you need to go for the “technician” quest. The garage key is needed to enter the two red doors. Behind the doors you can find some food and drinks.
Loot: generic randomized loot, inside locked garages guaranteed food and drinks.
Exit: none
This is the apartment building. Here is a perfect place to loot for food related items. On the 4th floor there is a locked door. You require the apartment Key to unlock it. There are also two “secret” rooms one on the balcony above the van blocking the door and one in the open window at the top of the right ladder. This is also where you find the valuable cargo and the scientist. You can also hide behind the balcony railing which makes for a perfect sniping spot but it does not have any ballistic protection.
Loot: randomized loot, food and drinks guaranteed, valuable cargo located here
Exit: one in the basement
This is the second forest transition in the city region. There is no cover at all here and only one crate to loot and its mostly just not worth it. Quickly get out of there before you get sniped.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is a hill with a BTR. Not much to offer loot-wise but for snipers a sweet spot. Here you can have a nice overview of the forest Transition and the Supermarket.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the local supermarket “Lyodmilla”. Here of course you can find some food and drink items. On the right of the building there is also the transition point to the Swamps.
Loot: generic randomized loot, guaranteed food and drinks
Exit: none
This is the “bunker”. The big boss of locations in freeplay. If you are not on a quest or hunting down players this is the destination for most players. Outside is not much to offer and its a bit irradiated but inside is the treasure trove of loot. There you can find high tier weapons, protection and explosives. To access it you will need a code. The code is transmitted every (in-game) midnight over a Radio. There are three safes in the bunker but only one of them is locked. The locked one is the one you need to unlock for the “information” quest to retrieve the documents. Other than that the locked safe usually contains helmets, backpacks, food and medical items. To get to the locked safe you need to find three fuses scattered around the bunker complex. There is also a section in the bunker referred to as the “parkour part”. There you need to make precise jumps to make it to the other side.
Loot: generic randomized loot outside. Inside: high tier loot, guaranteed medical items, guaranteed food and drinks
Exit: none
This is the right transition. Going through a door here will move you to the left transition. Beware of campers at bunker.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
Locations (forest)
This is the “left transition”. This part of the map connects the “right transition”. Going through one of the doors will spawn you at the right side of the forest.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: one inside the transition
This is a small hut in the forest. Not a significant location. There are also two wagons to the right.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: one inside the hut
This is a abandoned UAZ in the forest. It has a small underground part but except that nothing else significant.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the first transition between the forest and the city. People tend to camp on the ladder here so watch out.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the “radio tower”. Other than being used for the quest “broadcast” there is nothing too special about this location. The radio tower itself is a nice spot to snipe from.
This is the toxic tunnel. It is strongly recommended to wear a hazmat suit when going inside. Other than being used for the precursor quest this place has 1 locked safe which always has a scout and 1 flashbang. This location is also the only place where you can find the “trash” item. It does nothing, its just trash. Since the CO-OP quests are currently deactivated you don’t have to worry about bots spawning inside.
Loot: generic randomized Loot, one locked safe
Exit: none
This is the construction site. Here are a lot of crates to loot. It’s also the location of the door you need to enter for the deal quest.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the transition point between the forest and the swamps.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
A medium sized location with some containers. Not much else.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the second transition between the forest and the city. Pretty open with little cover.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is a watchtower next to the transition. Nice to snipe from, not much else.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the barn. Not a too important location but it does have two exit points. They are located in two huts on each side.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: two exits in the two huts on each side
This is the right transition in the forest.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: One exit in the tunnel.
Locations (swamp)
This is the left transition in the swamps.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
This is the transition between swamps and forest.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
A small wooden lodge in the swamp.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
An outpost in the swamp. Next to it is a broken down GAZ.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
A tool shed in the swamps.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
A small carport with no car inside.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
The transition point that connects the swamps and the city. There is also a broken T-72 tank on the hill.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none
The right transition point of the swamps.
Loot: generic randomized loot
Exit: none

Tips: to access the swamp you need to go through a door in the construction site located in the forest. To unlock the door you require a RFID key found somewhere on the construction site. It is recommended to bring good equipment and a high magnification sniper rifle such as the M98B Barret. Once inside you have to dispatch of some hostile wild boar which charge at you. For this a shotgun is recommended. But watch your step! If you are not careful you can sink into the ground and a teammate has to come and rescue you! Then you need to fight your way through to the car while picking up broken parts from other vehicles and crates that you need to repair the escape car. Once at the end of the Swamp there is a room with the bags. Bots will spawn from the left side of the map and charge at you, so good defense is needed! Load up the bags, repair the car and escape.
