Amateur's Guide to Combos for Downwell

Amateur’s Guide to Combos

Overview

I will give you some tips and tricks to help you combo easier and longer.

How do combos work?

In Downwell, you must kill monsters without touching the ground to do a combo. This can either be done by shooting them with your Gunboots or by simply falling on them. The bonuses for combos come in sections. I’ve only been able to get a 100 gem bonus, but I’m sure there are more.

Now lets be a bit more specific: When you land enough kills you begin to see these numbers above your character, for those are the amount of kills you have. There are 3 sets of bonuses so far.

1. getting 8 gives you 100 gems.
2. getting 15 and up gives 100 gems and +1 ammo caps.
3.Getting 25 and up gives you 100 gems, +1 ammo cap, and one extra health.

What to look out for

  • Be on the look out for destructable objects like buckets, cacti, shovels, rocks and, so on. These objects can be bounced on without losing your combo.
  • You cannot land on red and black creatures, for these creatures will damage you if you touch them (You can identify most by their lack of any white on them.)
  • Sanctuaries, such as shops or gem rooms. These rooms are in a time void and will not kill your combo if you go into them without touching the ground before hand.

Tips and Tricks

  • If your falling too fast and can’t focus, try shooting the Gunboots. They slow your descent and can also allow you to make tight turns.
  • Certain upgrades are helpful for combos, such as Gunpowder Blocks or Safety Rockets.
  • Try stomping the creatures instead off shooting them. Shooting too much often leaves you vulnerable to destructable blocks and sharp turns.
  • The floaty style is paticularly helpful as it makes you a bit more floaty, no pun intended.
  • Refrain from using the Lazer weapon as it chews through ammo and it’s much harder to do sharp turns.
