Overview
This guide will explain the story behind RAID Mode and its lore.
Genesis – The Experiment
The codename of a defensive A.I. developed by Umbrella that resides in the supercomputer. The Tyrant successor T-A.L.O.S. featured a chip embedded in its brain for complete wireless control by the Red Queen.
U.M.F.-013 was one of at least 13 computers installed in a shelter inside the Raccoon City underground laboratory. The entirety of Umbrella’s research (known as the Umbrella Archives) was stored on this computer. It was removed from the laboratory by Sergei Vladimir shortly before the destruction of Raccoon City.

RAID Mode is, in essence, a virtual environment made by Red Queen AIpha (Artificial Intelligence) to conduct battle experiments in. The Overseer (Alex Wesker) employed Red Queen Alpha in an effort to create the perfect soldier (Prototype C or Cipher) by teaching him the strengths of known characters (he essentially plays as those characters and learns their strengths) and the weaknesses of enemies (he slays harder and harder enemies along the way).
Prototype C, dubbed Cipher (literally means zero or null), is an unknown soldier or mercenary connected to the machine for the purpose of this experiment. Upon transferring his consciousness to the virtual world (RAID Mode), he stands up from his chair and begins to gather the experience of other known characters so that he can best them and become the perfect soldier.
Cipher is then guided through various challenges while posing as different known (to Alex Wesker) characters by Red Queen Alpha and is rewarded for his victories. He becomes more and more powerful as he conquers stronger foes and learns the strengths of the characters he plays as. Ultimately, he must pass one final test…
Endgame – Loyalty
Every participant of this experiment must ultimately, prove his loyalty to Alex Wesker and earn her trust. Ciphers’ loyalty is tested at the end of the experiment (Omega Stage) where he meets the portrait of Alex Wesker.
The perfect soldier must follow commands without question, even if those commands result in his/her death. Therefore, the perfect soldier is expected to surrender against the mutated Alex Wesker and accept his/her death.
The Cipher we play as, apparently fails to accomplish this and chooses to terminate the mutated Alex Wesker instead which immediately ceases the experiment (the virtual world crashes) and alerts the Red Queen Alpha.
The A.I. then proceeds to ask Cipher (the unknown soldier) whether he’s happy about his newly-found power: “You broke it, are you happy now?” before disposing of him in reality.
After his failure, Alex Wesker can no longer trust him since he is not loyal. Therefore, she has Cipher killed which effectively removes him from the experiment and tasks Red Queen Alpha with proceeding with the next test subject (another unknown soldier or mercenary).
Red Queen Alpha responds by saying: “I have to find another cute little guinea pig” because the last one (The original Cipher) has been disposed.
Facts & Proof
Here’s a list of facts that proves this story could possibly be true, although there may be other alternatives:
- Red Queen Alpha has been mentioned on ResidentEvil.net official website as the responsible entity behind RAID Mode.
- The Overseer’s voice is heard narrating the events of RAID Mode.
- Every time you enter RAID Mode, you get up as the Cipher and not the last character you selected.
- The Cipher essentially transforms into other characters inside the virtual world.
- Alex Wesker is the final boss and the A.I. doesn’t seem happy about you killing her.
- At the end of the experiment, a new “cute little guinea pig” is selected.
