How to get mods from the Steam Workshop to actually work (such as MBWS and improved particles) for Black Mesa

How to get mods from the Steam Workshop to actually work (such as MBWS and improved particles)

Overview

A guide on how to get the mods from the Steam Workshop to work. For the lazy ones.

Creating a custom folder

Before you subscribe to addons/mods you need to create a custom folder.
You need to go to whatever drive you use for steam, for example, mine is the D: drive.
You will also need to edit your gameinfo.txt file.

Go to your drive that you use and find SteamLibrary.

After going into SteamLibrary go into steamapps.

Then go to common, which is in steamapps.

It should look like this once you go into the common folder.

Go into the Black Mesa folder and then go into BMS.

After going into BMS right click and create a folder named custom.

Go into the Custom folder and create a folder named whatever you want. For example, I named mine “workshopmods”

After this, we will edit the gameinfo.txt file.

Getting to gameinfo.txt!

The gameinfo.txt file should be in the bms folder. It looks like this. You have to scroll down to get to it.

Once you open up the txt file with WordPad or Notepad (to open it with wordpad right click and then go to “open with” and then click on wordpad.)
It should look like this.

Scroll down until you find a section named SearchPaths.
Press enter a few times and type in a line named game+mod bms/custom/* and then save the file. This makes it so that Black Mesa reads the custom files every time you start up the game.

Next, I’ll show you how to install some mods.

Actually getting Steam Workshop mods to work.

Once you have downloaded some addons from the Steam Workshop, go to your steamapps folder. There should be a folder in there named “workshop”

Go in there and find a folder named Content

Go into the Content folder and there will or should be a folder named 362890.

There will be a bunch of files that look like this in the folder, if you already subscribed to some addons on the workshop.
These are the number IDs for the mods.
Scroll through the folders and you should find some .vpks
Copy the one of the mod you want to install. For example, if you want to install MBWS there will be a vpk named [MBWS].vpk

Go back to steamapps, then go to common, go to Black Mesa and then bms and then to the custom folder.
DO NOT PUT THE VPK IN THE OTHER FOLDER THAT IS IN THERE. The sound cache is in there for the actual game.

Paste the VPK into the custom folder.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have just installed a steam workshop addon correctly!

After actually installing the mod you need to unsubscribe from it in the Steam Workshop,

This is how you do it. That’s it. Until they fix the steam workshop, this is how you do it.
