Catching Spy Guide

How to Catch Spy !!!

Walking

Spys walk differently then other any other class, disguised spys will avoid walking into others because even when disguised a spy cannot walk into the other team and because of this it is really obvious who is and isnt a spy. of course those who have played spy for a very long time have figured out how to play on this, they will walk towards you until they get really close and move to one of your sides and stab you. this registers as a backstab and is a very effective way of playing spy as many will not expect a spy to do this.

In short if they try to avoid you they might be a spy (beware of trolls).
Dead Ringer Spys
This section is more about identifying if a spy is using the dead ringer. First off if they died in only 1 or 2 hits they might be using a dead ringer. One sure fire way to tell is pressing tab a few secs after the “kill” and checking repeatedly if the spys name is not darkened out or becomes undarkened after only a few secs he is using a dead ringer and most likely behind you. Another faster way is to pay attention to your kills on the tab screen, dead ringer spys do not count as a kill when they use it, if you pay attention you can catch it as soon as it happens.

In short use tab.

Disguises

Typically spys will favor one class disguise. For example a spy might continualy disguise as a pyro to try and sap a sentry this can be very helpful if a spy keeps coming back or is using a dead ringer. another very easy way to see past a spy’s disguise is if the cosmetics are missing, if a scout is using a leg replacing cosmetic sometimes a spy will have invisible legs, or if they disguise as a class that no one on your team is they will take the name of a random player and the model will have 0 cosmetics on at all.

In short always beware others.

Engineer Buildings

Disguised spys are unable to walk into any engineer buildings but are able to use teleporters, if a team member is unable to walk into a sentry gun or dispenser they are a spy, if they are able to walk into it they are real and there is no need to spy check them further. If you see a spys sapper outline on any near by engineer equipment the nearest team member is most likely a spy, however if no one is around the spy is invisible and hiding out somewhere, it is recommended to shoot in all corners of the room if you see the outline of a sapper but are unable to see a spy.

In short buildings block spys.
Just 1 Shot
Spys when shot will have some blood splatter, all you need is 1 gunshot or 1 melee hit to find out if they are a spy, if when you shoot them and if the bullet or explosive hits them they are, you may need to shoot twice to make sure. If a “team mate” looks at you when you shoot them from behind they might be a spy.
Intel (CTF)
A spy when walking over the intel will auto pick up and have no disguise equipped. This along with other info in this guide allows you to determine if a spy just walked by the intel, if they are actively avoiding it they might be a spy.
In Conclusion
Thank you for reading this guide and make sure to always watch your back.
