Runes For Dummies

Overview

Runes: how to get them, how to use them, and what they do.

How To Get Runes

There are four methods of obtaining runes:

  • Drops from completing a Dungeon Anomaly (non-elite)
  • Crafting runes through transmutation
  • Enemies with the rare Runelord affix will gives 1-2 random anomalous runes when defeated
  • Transmuting 5 different anomalous runes for a random anomalous rune (the pool is made up of runes for the current class and the shared runes)

Anomalous runes:

  • Anomalous runes come from Dungeon anomalies (non-elite)
  • You get up to 2 runes per run depending on the difficulty you choose.
  • The Dungeon anomalies are accessed via a dropdown menu:

Crafted Runes:

  • Crafted runes are extracted from gear via transmutation
  • Extracting a rune from an item destroys the item
  • You can craft a rune by transmuting the following:
    • 50 champion’s crowns
    • A runestone
    • A piece of gear with an extractable power (dark orange text)
    • Make sure none of the above items are favorited; you can not transmute favorited items.
  • Runestones come from bosses in Elite Dungeon Anomalies. You can select Elite Dungeon Anomalies in the anomaly dropdown:
  • Greater runes are extracted from True Legendary items.

How Runes Work

When you apply a rune to an item, you add that rune’s power to the item. The item maintains all other stats including any power it originally had prior to rune application.

You can apply a rune to an item by combining the following at the transmutation NPC:

  • 50 Champion’s Crowns
  • The rune you want to apply
  • The item you want to apply the rune to
  • Make sure none of the above items are favorited; you can not transmute favorited items

Rules of application:

  • Runes must match the gear slot(s) listed on them.
  • The rune is consumed upon application.
  • Runes applied to items CAN NOT be recovered.
  • You CAN NOT attach a rune to the same item it can be extracted from. (ie no kingsrock rune on a kingsrock ring)
  • Multiple copies of the same rune do not stack. (this only applies to anomalous runes, as they are the only ones that can be applied to multiple slots)
  • You are limited to 3 greater runes total on your equipped gear, baseline; this limit can be increased to 4 by equipping an item with the Lesser Rune of Greatness applied.
  • Augments are thrown away when the rune is created; you can re-augment the power once the rune is applied to an item.
  • You CAN NOT apply a class-restricted rune to an item that the class can not equip. So no Lusombra’s rune on Brutal Stompers, for example, since the templar can’t equip the stompers.
  • You CAN apply a class-restricted rune to any item of the right type that the class can equip. So you CAN apply Lusombra’s to Battle Boots, or another pair of universal boots, to get the effect of Lusombra’s on a Berserker, Warden, or Warlock.
  • You can destroy an applied rune by transmuting the item with a Runelord’s Remorse; this is a very rare crafting material. This is the only way to change the rune that is applied to an item.

Augmenting And You

What do the numbers in brackets mean on the rune? Here’s an image to explain:

  • The first number is the basic roll range.
  • The second is the cap for augmenting at the regular enchanter.
  • The third is the cap for greater augmentation at the Ancient Enchantress in Tinka’s Domain, which costs memory essence in addition to the normal enchanting materials.

Cosmic Cape
(20-30) [50] [[70]] % of Maximum Mana is converted into 1.5x as much Damage.
Entity’s Eccentricity
Satellites now deal direct damage, triggering on-hit effects. In addition, satellite damage is increased by (32-48) [80] [[100]] %.
Health Injector
Restores (1620-1890) [4000] [[5000]] Health instantly when falling below 30% Maximum Health. 10 second cooldown.
Health Injector MKII
Restores (1980-2310) [6500] [[12000]] Health instantly when falling below 30% Maximum Health. 10 second cooldown.
Heart of the Forest
Reduces the base cooldown of all skills by (12-17) [28] [[40]] % and increases their base cost by twice as much.
Heartstone
Increases Health by (20-30) [50] [[60]] % of total Resistances, and sets all Resistances to 0.
Mana Injector
Restores (720-840) [1800] [[2500]] Mana instantly when falling below 30% Maximum Mana. 10 second cooldown.
Mana Injector MkII
Restores (990-1155) [2250] [[5000]] Mana instantly when falling below 30% Maximum Mana. 10 second cooldown.
Quadruplets
Summons four skull companions, each skull representing one of the four elements available in the skill trees. The skulls have (80-120) [200] [[300]] % damage of their chosen element and their attacks will trigger player on-hit effects.
Rahlence’s Resolution
Adds a (4-6) [10] [[15]] % chance on kill to grant a random buff that lasts for 15 seconds.

Chronicle of Knowledge
Adds (2-2) [3] [[5]] % Bonus Experience on each kill, stacking up to 100 times and lasts until an item of Unique or higher quality drops.
Community
+(10-15) [25] [[30]] % Crystals found and Experience gained from all sources.
Elementium Stone
Dealing direct damage to a foe places an Elemental Attunement on them, increasing the direct damage they take by (6-9) [15] [[20]] %. Each element used places a separate Attunement. Lasts 7 seconds.
Fang of Alucard
Health on Hit is (40-60) [100] [[200]] % more effective.
Hound Whistle
Grants a friendly Hellhound companion with (30-45) [75] [[100]] % Fire damage.
Hydra Scale
Adds a 5% chance on being hit to increase Health Regeneration by (160-240) [400] [[500]] % for 3 seconds.
Shizbuk’s Tail
Provoke and pull a random nearby foe when attacking.
Skyshard
Adds a 5% chance on hit to strike the foe for (160-240) [400] [[500]] % of the damage dealt as Lightning damage.
Smolder
Foes killed burn the ground, dealing (96-144) [240] [[300]] % Fire damage per second for 3 seconds in a small radius.
Stone of Tephra
Thrown skills and Stone (Berserker) skills deal (12-18) [30] [[60]] % increased damage.

Greater Runes

Death Choker
Health and Mana pickups no longer instantly restore Health and Mana. Instead each pickup increases Health Regeneration, Mana Regeneration, Health on Hit, and Mana on Hit by (4-6) [10] [[15]] % for 10 seconds. Stacks 5 times and is affected by Pickup Strength.
Despair
All attacks deal (10-15) [25] [[40]] % increased damage to foes who are slowed or immobilized.
Ferocity
When using any skill, there’s a chance equal to (12-18) [30] [[40]] % of the current missing Health percentage to instantly reset the cooldown of the skill. This chance never goes below 10%.
Gravity
All satellites spawn in pairs and deal (40-60) [100] [[150]] % increased damage.
Talisman of Spines
For each assigned skill that is Utility, Ultimate, Companion, Aura, Heritage, or Ritual, thorns is increased by (40-60) [100] [[150]] %.
Tear of the Arch Druid
All indirect damage enchants such as Chain Lightning, Burn, Smite, etc. deal (40-60) [100] [[150]] % increased damage.
Unwavering Loyalty
Companions gain (8-12) [20] [[30]] % increased Evasion and Attack Speed.

Royal Armor
(120-180) [300] [[400]] % of your Health on Hit and Mana on Hit are now added to Health Regeneration and Mana Regeneration respectively, however both Health on Hit and Mana on Hit are removed.
Spectral Armor
+(6-9) [15] [[20]] % increased Evasion and Damage Reduction.
Vestige of Lost Souls
Drains 15% of Maximum Mana every 5 seconds to create a protective barrier absorbing damage equal to (10-15) [25] [[40]] times the mana drained.
Wind Dancer’s Elegance
When evading an attack, there is a 10% chance to spawn a Health or Mana pickup. Adds (10-15) [25] [[40]] % to Evasion.

Lesser Runes

The Hardcore
Any attack that would kill the wearer will instead restore them to (16-24) [40] [[50]] % Maximum Health. This effect can only occur once per 90 seconds.
Vampire Lord’s Cape
The wearer is healed for (60-90) [150] [[200]] % of all mana spent or drained.

Health Regeneration is increased by (400-600) [1000] [[1200]] % of missing Health percentage.
Pathmakers
Your Health Regeneration and Mana Regeneration are increased by (60-90) [150] [[180]] % of your Movement Speed.
Stormchasers
Damage increased by (4-6) [10] [[20]] % for each twister, gust, whirlwind and similar type of effect within 5 meters. Effect stacks up to 15 times.

Lesser Runes

You become immune to both knockback and movement impairing effects.
Molten Skin Boots
Ground Effect Skills deal (20-30) [50] [[90]] % increased damage and last (20-30) [50] [[90]] % longer.
Nimble
You become immune to movement impairing effects.
Staggering Boots
(16-24) [40] [[45]] % of damage taken is staggered and dealt over 3 seconds.

Life Guard
Reduces damage taken from all sources, including indirect, by (12-18) [30] [[50]] %.
Lucilla’s Vision
10% of overhealing received from Health on Hit is turned into damage. The effect lasts 7 seconds and stacks up to (4-6) [10] [[16]] % of Maximum Health.
Skull Mask
For each non-set item, Damage is increased by (5-8) [12] [[20]] %.
Weyrick’s Crown
For each Gem socketed into worn equipment, base Health, Mana, and Damage is increased by (2) [3] [[4]] %. (Note that this is additive with the class mastery bonus multipliers)

Golden Guard

Gemstone Tiara
Any gem socketed into this helm also provides the bonuses from being socketed into a weapon and jewelry slot.
Jotunhelm
(12-18) [30] [[60]] % of Health Regeneration is converted into Damage, however all Health Regeneration is removed.
Mightcap
You can now equip 2 Ultimate skills, and all Ultimate skills are now (12-18) [30] [[50]] % stronger.
Saboteur
Breaking breakable objects increases Movement Speed by 1%, stacking up to (12-18) [30] [[50]] times. Effect lasts 10 seconds.
Skull of Harlon
Projectile skills have (20-30) [50] [[90]] % increased range and damage.

Greater Runes

Name

Aspect of the Ethereal
All indirect damage enchants apply a debuff dealing the same amount of damage per second as Ethereal, stacking infinitely and lasting 7 seconds.
Boomring
Foes explode upon death, dealing (4-6) [10] [[15]] % of their Maximum Health as Ethereal damage to all foes within 3 meters.
Jeopardy
Your Critical Hit Chance is locked to 5%, and for each hit you gain (8-12) [20] [[25]] % Critical Hit Damage for 3 seconds, until you reach 10 stacks. After reaching 10 stacks, your Critical Hit Chance is locked to 100% for 3 seconds, after which it resets. (limited to 1 stack per frame)
Primordial Rose
Every 3 seconds, resistance to a random element is increased by (20-30) [50] [[100]] % for 3 seconds.
Pure Energy
(12-18) [30] [[40]] % of Damage taken subtracted from Mana instead of Health, draining 1 Mana per 4 points of Damage.
Titan Ring
The Knockback Chance stat increases Damage by the same percentage, but will no longer trigger knockbacks. In addition, active skills with a knockback effect no longer cause knockback, and have their base damage increased by (14-21) [35] [[50]] % for each meter of knockback they normally do. Does not affect Utility skills.
Unbreakable Bond
Reduces all damage taken by Companions by (36-54) [90] [[98]] %.

Dragon Burn deals an additional (20-30) [50] [[80]] % of the initial damage dealt.
Bad Boys
Boulder, Rock Pound, and Shattering Roar have an additional (14-21) [35] [[50]] % range.
Face Breakers
Each attack adds a stack of Face Breaking, storing the 40% of the damage of the attack. At (2) [3] [[4]] stacks, the total damage is added to all attacks for 3 seconds.
Haymaker
Brawl skills have a 50% chance to strike up to 2 additional times at random nearby enemies for (28-42) [70] [[100]] % increased damage. Mobility skills are unaffected.
Icebergs
Shattering Cold instead releases large ice chunks dealing (40-60) [100] [[150]] % increased damage and in a 2 meter radius.
Moe’s Fury
Fists of Fury now throws fists, traveling up to 7 meters. Fists of Fury also deals (10-15) [25] [[50]] % increased damage and is considered a Thrown skill.
The Last Word
Shout skills deal up to (120-180) [300] [[400]] % increased damage the closer the foes are to the Berserker. In addition, Shout skills have 50% increased range.
Thunder Claps
Blessing of The Skies now also increases Lightning Damage by (18-27) [45] [[70]] %.

Utility skills also restore (4-5) [8] [[12]] % of Maximum Health and Mana.
Amp Claw
Amplified deals (32-48) [80] [[100]] % additional damage.
Claws of Gluttony
Hunger triggers on foes with (8-12) [20] [[25]] % more Health.
Wrath Claw
Explosive Punch, Flame Roll, and Dragon Breath reset their cooldown when Explosive Manoeuvres triggers.
Wyrmtooth
Frost Winds and Cooling Off have an additional (18-27) [45] [[55]] % chance to trigger.

Amulets

Frostborn Heirloom
Rage Release no longer deals damage and instead provides a protective barrier, shielding the Berserker for 1% of his Maximum Health for every 3 Rage consumed by the skill. Barrier lasts (8-12) [20] [[30]] seconds or until broken.
Gritstone
Stoneskin now provides immunity to poison and bleed effects while active. In addition, all Stone skills deal (6-9) [15] [[30]] % increased damage.
Molten Medallion
Lava Blood deals (1) [1] [[3]] % increased damage for every 22 points of Mana Regeneration.

Helmets

Dragon Breath now summons (1-2) [2] [[4]] dragons circling the Berserker.

All Shout skills also cast War Cry.
Helm of Might
Rage based passive skills are now (16-24) [40] [[55]] % stronger.

Generate (4-6) [10] [[20]] rage per second at all times. Rage never fades.

Armor

Hydrarage
Magma Hydra now attaches itself to the back of the Berserker, and deals 1% increased damage for each point of Rage. Magma Hydra also has its duration increased by (2-3) [5] [[7]] seconds, but is limited to a single instance.

The cooldown of Dive, Flame Roll, and Glacial Roll is reduced by (32-48) [80] [[100]] %.

If Stonefist hits a crowned foe it will strike an additional 3 times.Stonefist also deals (60-90) [150] [[200]] % increased damage.

The Blue Bolt
Dive and Hop casts Dragon Storm at rank 5 when used. Dragon Storm deals (60-90) [150] [[200]] % increased damage.

The Dragon Flame
Embershield, Flame Roll, and Flamewrath deal (40-60) [100] [[150]] % increased damage and have no cooldown. However, these skills apply a burn effect to the Berserker, dealing 1% of his total health per second, stacking 10 times. Burn lasts 7 seconds.

Warp Echo
Dragon Warp creates a Warp Echo when used, which has a (24-36) [60] [[100]] % chance to replicate any Shout Skills used by the Berserker. The Warp Echo lasts until Dragon Warp is used again.
