Tips and Tricks for Rogue Legacy

Tips and Tricks

Overview

This guide contains useful information about the spells and abilities as well as information how to defeat the bosses. It will also give you useful information about how the game scales and tips on how to deal with new game+.

Intro

This guide contains some information that is my opinion so don’t fly off the handle if you disagree with some parts.

This guide contains information that I have picked up while playing through the game.

General Tips

  • Don’t be afraid to use mana, you get loads of mana pots dropping, far more than chicken.
  • You don’t have to clear a room, you are allowed to leave and go around it.
  • After most to all of the runes have been collected, stat enhancements are dropped. (These do not change values in the manor)
  • Fairy chest rooms get harder once all rooms have been collected
  • When killing ball and chain enemies you can get the ball stuck in the wall to instantly kill it.
  • Reflect damage is the only way I have found to kill fireball traps and pressure spike traps.
  • Get good at hitting the green extendo-platforms as it will be very useful.
  • You are only able to unlock the first 3 columns of equipment, until you complete the game once.
  • **DO NOT** Kill the last boss unless you feel like you are able to kill much harder monsters, grind some money and armour first.
  • If the game gets to hard use the “Scale Down Enemy” runes.
  • Kill the eyeballs first they become a real pain in the ass.
  • If you die on a boss and don’t want to walk all the way back lock the castle and teleport back.
  • If a class with dwarfism appears take it you never known when it might become useful.
  • Your hit box isn’t as big as the character.
  • Patience is a virtue play through the game slowly to avoid damage.
  • Fairy rooms which require you to kill monsters behind a wall are usually only doable by a lich with crow storm.
  • The assassin’s class ability won’t save you from non-pressure pad spikes.
  • Never take a class with vertigo.
  • Extra gold runes are good in early play throughs but swap them out later.
  • Money comes naturally as the game gets harder so don’t worry to much about destroying entire rooms.
  • New game+ gives extra cash from coins, bags and diamonds. This scales the higher the play through.
  • If you get the hedgehogs curse from a prayer shrine enjoy collecting your money.

Classes

Knave / Assassin

Personally one of my favourite classes for new game+. It deals really high damage when it crits, and this is the route that I took when playing the game It scales very well the longer you play the game. In the manor I went only unlocks on the left hand side. I would not advise using this class too much near the beginning of the game as you rely too much on the crit chance and if you don’t crit when you need to you die. The assassins ability is amazing. It allows you to complete some of the fairy challenge rooms with ease, do not be afraid to use it against bosses or even in normal rooms. You are able to jump and dash while in stealth but attacking breaks it.

This is my class of choice in new game+ for killing bosses.

Knight / Paladin

The knight is an all round good map clearer. With the ability gained when you become a paladin to block, you can become almost invincible. As with the assassin don’t be afraid to use your skill the mana cost is pretty low and the paladin has a high mana pool. You are also able to become a statue when you take no damage, but you are unable to move and drains mana quickly. I generally use this when there isn’t an assassin or a barbarian available.

Barbarian / Barbarian King

The barbarian I didn’t use very much in my first or second time through. The damage reduction that this class gains made it so that it took too long to kill things and I lost much more health. However on my third time through when I had almost finished all the manor upgrades, I found that having over 1000 health and 50% crit chance meant that the lack of damage was negated. At first glance the barbarian kings skill looks terrible and costs a lot of mana in comparison to your mana pool. It destroys all projectiles which is great against Alexander and 90% of the monsters in the game. This class is able to brute force its way through most rooms with out a hitch and is far better at collecting gold than the spelunker.

Shinobi / Hokage

The hokage is an amazing damage dealer. However it doesn’t scale well into the later game. With 0% crit chance your damage soon tapers off unlike an assassin. I mainly used this on my first play through because it can one-shot most monsters. It’s ability is pretty good but most of the time I found myself teleporting into enemies while escaping. They are good but not the best available class.

Mage / Archmage

The mage class I never really played as until I got a fully upgraded manor I never upgraded the spells. The amount of health that they had was far too low in my opinion and I died way too quickly. Their class ability allows you to change between 3 spells. There are two sets of spells that I have seen which each contain 3 spells. To be honest this ability is pretty lame, as the fireball spell and iron ball spell are by far the best so I never really switched.

Miner / Spelunker

The miner is an amazing class on an original play through, but after that it is terrible. It is by far the worst class in the game, the lack of health and damage that it has means that it can’t survive any amount of punishment. The gold bonus that it gains isn’t worth the effort of picking this class. If it was 150% – 200% more then it would be worth it but its not :(. The ability is completely useless save your money and buy something else. There are far better classes at gaining money.

Lich / Lich King

The lich has interesting mechanics where killing monsters gains more max health. However I found that the lack of damage this class dealt wasn’t worth the time to farm max health. As you get more health on a barbarian as the max health gets capped at around 200% of your base. By the time you have reached this max value you are either usually almost dead or have finished the map.

Spell Thief / Spell Sword

I never really played the spell thief in the early stages of the game. But once you have a fully upgraded manor this is one of the best classes for clearing the map. On hit, mana is gained and when a monster is killed you gain a lot of mana back. Spells to look out for on this class are fireball and iron balls. These spells can be kept on or spammed in a room because 1 melee kill and you have full mana again. I used this class a lot when scouring the map for runes and armours. If you have reflect damage, when you are hit you also gain mana.

Half-Dragon

The half-dragon like the other mage classes I never really played very much as my magic power wasn’t upgraded so the damage it dealt to level 160’s was about 5% of the health. In the latest patch the reintroduced to ability to spam fire balls again which makes it more viable than before. The reason I chose this class was when there were fairy chests on the map that I didn’t want to risk life on. I would lock the castle and fly there and clean up.
