Arena Design – Making an arena for strategy

Overview

A guide about things to consider when making an arena or room.

Introduction

This is a short guide that will be covering somethings you might want to consider when making an arena or room.

Everything said is not the absolute way to make a good arena or room it is just a list helpful things to remember.

I hope this helps you in making your arena or map.

Things to remember about the arena

The arena works quite differently then how the episodes do.

The main things to remember are:

Each clone gets a minute in the arena meaning the player will play 4 minutes in your arena

If the player destroys all the enemies (cubes) in the arena before using every clone the arena doesn’t end until all the clones have been used

The player begins with 550 gold (4 gun upgrades)

what your goals are

Your goal to making an arena or room is to have the player engaged and enjoying it.

Here are some pointers to help you:

Dont let the player run out of enemies

If player manages to shoot all the enemies in an arena before it ends the player could have 30+ seconds to wait until the round ends which can change a good arena to an ok arena. that can sometimes be the difference between a thumbs up and a thumbs down especially if the player has to wait 1 minute.

Give the player a unique experience

If you want to make the player remember your arena then dont just have rooms with cubes on the floor that are easy for the player to shoot and then move on. Make the player jump around, shoot in a different direction then normal or take them to the roof.

See and go

Most players won’t try to figure out or maybe even attempt a puzzle that will take more then 10 seconds to figure out. All the player wants to do is quickly destroy as many enemies as possible. If the puzzle that you make slows that momentum down significantly they will ignore it. What you should make is an easy puzzle that the player understands instantly.

Some important tips

The player always uses acid

This statement is false but that is what you have to believe.

Acid is the way players can keep moving through rooms quickly. You as a room and arena creator have to know this and use it to your advantage. The player may require more rooms or more content within a room then you expect.

enemies time until death with acid (estimated):

red: 4 sec
white: 4.25 sec
yellow:20 sec
found by shooting one shot with the plasma beam

The players time is valuable

Some players will look at a room and make a mental calucation of whether a room or puzzle is worth their time, if not they will ignore it and move on.

Dont have yellow enemies in the first room or the adjacent rooms

yellow enemies give the player a lot more gold then red or white enemies. Having yellow enemies in those locations can give the player strong weapons to use in the second round. If the player can’t get very powerful straight away it is more likely they will to try to form a unique strategy for your arena or room visiting pattern. If the yellow enemy rooms are futher away the player can progess to them so then their last 2 clones can be powerful.

Conclusion

I hope this helps you make your arenas and rooms.

I may keep updating I may not. If you have any other idea of how to make arenas better tell me in the comments or if you disagree with anything written in this guide.

I hope you make an amazing arena.
