FAQ for beginners 2020

Overview

This is a quick and dirty FAQ for beginners. If you want more in-depth guides, there are others who cover that sort of deal. There’s also a wiki as well.

FAQ

1) How should I create my character?
– There are character guides out there. If you want a combat character, pick rifles/pistols/blades then pick evasion as your defensive. Stealth if you are doing an assassin. Now if you want to play primarily for ship battles, you need command and tactics. I personally always pick Skills as template A as this is something you will never get more of. If doing combat captain, I recommend you use the leftover points into Command because you need as much ship dodging dice as you can get.

2) What faction should I play?
– Doesn’t matter. It depends on the map seed. You can choose to generate easier maps and still enjoy the game while doing unlocks. Generate some seeds in the Character confirm screen and try to make a map that’s like a web rather than one long dead end. Small and Dense makes your game much easier. IF you find that your starting system is all spaced out, that just means that your particular chosen faction had a “hard start”. Pick one with close planets or just keep generating map seeds.

3) I blinged out my small ship and I can’t escape or change range. I keep getting owned!
– So anyone who does their homework will know about ship stats. But something that isn’t that intuitive is two stats that isn’t really put in your face and it matters. They are COMMAND and TACTICS. They come from crew which is why people always say to hire a TON of military officers or Commanders. Your other ship stats are capped by devices and are maxed at 200% but what makes your ship better than another ship of the same build is COMMAND and TACTICS. COMMAND is mostly defensive and TACTICS is mostly offensive. Like I said before, Bigger ships are easier to use because the dice pools are large enough where you don’t really need to care about COMMAND and TACTICS (unless you are playing impossible) but small ships need as much COMMAND and TACTICS as possible.

4) So why don’t I just fly a plane full of Military officers?
– You need at least one set of fighting crew and the other jobs to help with skill saves. You need your ship stats to be at least 100%. You can dodge great in ship combat but you will get hit with alot of space parasites and crashing into asteroids. If you go into combat with a damaged ship, you probably going to lose those stats that matter in ship combat. You want those card abilities like auto pass piloting and such which is not found on military officers.

5) Why am I getting so much ship ops damages reports when traveling?
– You are flying in a sector with radiation storm. Or…
– Your engine has a safety of less than 100%. Larger ships have more safer engines. You can also buy special components that give “Engine safety” like the Zenrin officer suite and the Javat Fuel reclamation 4 Or…
– Your ship ops/piloting/navigation stat is below 100%

6) Wow large ships are great. How come they are the same price as some of the mid-range?
– Because of the components that get defaulted on each ship. A mid class ship can have a hyperion launch bay and those things alone cost alot. Bigger ships are better but always make sure you have enough defense (as in dodging, not shields or armor) so that you don’t end up with time consuming repairs. Repairs on big ships can really hurt your deadlines.

7) Can I just take a small ship all the way to end game because I hate being a manager?
– The developer introduced hanger bays with wing fighters which I believe uses a different stat to hit and evade. You’re going to have to ask someone else about this.

8) How do I make quick money?
– I personally like running missions. The default prince lets you make one faction really mad so he’s pretty save to grind money off of. There’s other ways to make money but most of you who play an MMORPG are probably doing quests and are not the few who join an MMORPG to merch and control the economy. So missions is where the money is at. Buy up ranks.

9) What is your experience in this game?
– On and off. Maybe like a couple of years.
