Overview
A very useful guide which covers the basics of Down to One.
Introduction & some notes
Since DtO is a very recent game it is important to have a detailed guide to the basics of this game. My experience of 12 hours in the game may help you to get around the game.
Even is 1.0 there is still a lot of optimizations to be done. It’s your job to report any bug that you encounter. Also, be patient since this game is done by one dev. It has come a long way from nothing to what you see today. Dev is as done a lot work by doing weekly updates! Finally, you pay what you get for!
What is Down to One?
Down to One is a competitive survival shooter in a large, interactive, open-world environment. Start out with nothing, and use anything you can find in the environment to survive, and eliminate other competitors over the course of a brutal round. Last one to survive wins!
This game goal at the start of Down To One’s development was to create a competitive survival game with no zombies, and you can take a look at the success of our weekly cups as a testament to how well that’s turned out.
How to play?
Most game modes start in a lobby room called Northern Outlook. Depending the game mode you can exit and start exploring or you are teleported to random spawns. After that, is up to you: you can ally to another player or you can go bezerk and kill everyone to stand on your sight. There is also Deathmatch server where you can go and practice your shooting skills.
These are some basic controls to the game.
This is the main menu of the game. Press “join” and it will open a server list. Press “Perks & customization” to choose your perks and custom your player. “Join Featured Server” will take you to a server instantly. “Report a Bug” button is for reporting bugs (lel), now seriously, everyone should report every bug you find. “Settings” will show the game, graphical and audio settings. “Quit” well, it exits the game.
In the left top corner of your screen you can find your location, where you heading and if the place is a “hotzone” or not. Is not showed in this image but you can also see if you stand in a “playable area” or not. (What is “hotzone” and “playable area”? Read FAQ)
Here you can find your inventory. You can only carry around 9 itens so make sure you have a good balance between Ammo food health packs and Water. Select an item with your mouse scroll, to use an item use “E” and to drop an item use “T”. To pick up items use “F”
In your right top corner shows your dehydration level, food level and health level. If food or water levels begin to deteriorate your health levels are going to suffer. Keep always a look in these icons.
You begin tin Northern Outlook. After that you can go anywhere you like. My recommendation is to go directly to US Base or Old Airfield if you want weapons. If you want Food, Water or suplies villages like Doda or Aras is where you should go.
Money, Perks and Customization
You can win money by playing football in the lobby with other players, survive to be the last one and playing rounds. After each round you win money based on your performance. Which minute or so you also win 50$. If you scored a goal in the lobby you win 20$! Use G to kick the ball inside the lobby.
With the money that are given, you can buy perks. Some perks are only unlocked in a certain level
In this menu you can see: Perks avaiable, Stats & Rank, chosen cammo and your level.
Your rank varies if you performe well or not in a round. You win more Elo points if you win a round but if you finish second you will win less elo points than the first place and so on. There is not much info avaiable at the moment.
Tips
Now you have mastered the basics and now can do whatever you want! Here’s some tips:
- If you have a crappy laptop go to graphics options and change it to “Max FPS” if that is not enough try to set multi-sampling around 80%
- You will find snakes near rocky mountains. They can hurt you bad.
- No weapon? No problem, look for a rock to throw.
- Headshow means insta-kill. No matter how far are you.
- Use “/” to change views in the G36C scope
- Try to use F1,2,3,4,5 and 6 in-game and see what happens!
- If you health is low you will get the “shakes” and then aiming will be almost impossible.
- Try to ambush instead of going head-on to a fight
- Loot is constantly respawing in the same place.
- If you find a radio walkie-talkie it will tell you where the nearest player or weapon is in exchange for money.
- You can bet in which player is going to win. Perfect for win extra cash!
- Perks are a very important part of the game. Go and have a look!
- Press F9 to make Gif’s! Works pretty much like Fraps but instead of saving in .avi or .mp4 saves in Gif. Now you can share your amazing discoveries…or bugs…
- In the middle of the desert and you have nothing to drink? Check nearby trees!
FAQ
Why the game is so laggy?
It is normal that in early stages the game is super laggy. Explanation given by the Dev is that this game is not well optimized and it’s bounded to CPU only. That means the game use entirely the CPU instead of the CPU and the dedicated GPU. The graphics that you see on your screen are created with your CPU in-built GPU! Now imagine 32 players in a server! Is very hard to any CPU in the market to process so much data. Next updates going to work out this, hopefully soon!
My super computer lags with 23 FPS? What is wrong?
Explained above. My recommendation is to set graphics in “Max FPS” or “Low” settings until this issue is resolved. If there are too many players in the server you will suffer some low FPS. As the time passes and players are killed the FPS will rise gradually. Hope to be fixed soon too!
This is boring! When the game starts?
When the round ends. It does not take that much time since the playable area will get smaller and smaller after a period of time.
What is hotzone?
It is the area where the environment is going to try to kill you. In this case with bombardments. Get some cover or bale out!
What is playable area?
Playable area is the area you can roam. You can see it by a huge green skybox in the sky. If you out of that area, you must get inside of playable area as soon as possible or you will die. The playable are will get smaller each minute or so. This prevents the game to get boring and rounds taking up 30 minutes. Imagine you in the movie “Battle Royale”.
I haven’t seen Battle Royale lol
You sir, don’t deserve to live. Think about Hunger Games then.
IGN 11/10 GOTY
Chill dude. Like I said this game as a lot of potential. Be nice, help the dev with the bugs by reporting and seat tight. Weekly updates DO MAKE A DIFERENCE! After all a game for 50 cents, you pay what you get for.
