Overview
Simple, spoiler-free, easy-to-follow, playthrough guide. Contains two full playthroughs of the story which together award all achievements. Useful for achievement seekers and people who’d like to read the game as a book, as this guide provides cohesive and well-rounded stories.
Introduction
This is a simple, easy-to-follow, spoiler-free guide, designed to give you solid playthroughs that will give some nice achievements, or set up solid characters to enter Lords of Infinity with. Additionally if you’d prefer to just read the game like a book, this guide should help you to have a well-rounded playthrough with a cohesive character and story.
Please note that the choices must be taken as they’re listed here – deviating from the provided path will usually mess something up later on due to many hidden stat checks. I’ve done my best to note where you can choose alternate options, though, so you have a bit of flexibility; see:
- [Optional] You can choose these choices if you like for extra story – they won’t affect your stats.
- [Alternate] You can choose these choices instead for the same effect as the one before it.
- [Choose Any] Any of the choices present can be chosen. The story might be different but we’ll stay on the same path.
The first playthrough follows directly from the Sabres of Infinity National Hero walkthrough and requires loading its completed savefile. This will be a strong story of heroism, bravery and leadership. Includes nine achievements:
Note: To achieve both War Has Changed and War Never Changes two playthroughs of the National Hero run are necessary – unfortunately it’s not possible to get all twenty achievements in two playthroughs. It is clearly marked in the guide which choices should be made for which War achievement to be unlocked; these choices begin in Chapter IV and end in Chapter X.
- A Hero’s Ascent
- Worth the Wait
- Towering in Gallant Fame
- A Matter of Honour
- Food for Powder
- Mentor Figure
- War Has Changed
- War Never Changes
- Colonels in Refrigerators
The second playthrough follows directly from the Sabres of Infinity Proper Gentleman walkthrough and requires loading its completed savefile. This is an interesting yet cynical tale of a broken man and the prices that must be paid to earn redemption. Includes eleven achievements:
- One Last Chance
- Cannon Ending
- La Route Glorieuse
- To Heroic Deeds of Daring
- Find Strellyk, Kill Strellyk
- Bastard!
- Desperta Ferro!
- The King Calls for Wetwork.
- Terminal Lance
- Just Following Orders
- Chosen Men
Disclaimer: This guide was produced using the Steam version of the game. It is also not intended as a ‘perfect’ playthrough guide, although both walkthroughs will give good and interesting starts in the upcoming book Lords of Infinity. Any suggestions, questions or problems, please leave a comment.
“Tierra and Victory! Advance!”
National Hero – Prologue
Import a character from Sabres of Infinity.

Select savefile from completed National Hero playthrough of Sabres of Infinity
[Optional] I would like to change my character’s first name.
[Optional] I would like to change my character’s last name.
Yes, let me continue the story of this Dragoon officer.
[Achievement: A Hero’s Ascent]
National Hero – Chapter I
[Optional] I’ll ask my Staff-sergeant for advice first.
With cunning; I’ll lure the enemy into an ambush.
[Choose Any]
“You’re right, Staff-sergeant. Changes need to be made.”
“Very good, Staff-sergeant, see that it is done.”
National Hero – Chapter II
“We’ve already identified the root causes, and my Staff-sergeant is already working on it.”
[Optional Questions]
“Good day to you, Sir Caius.”
[Choose Family’s Barony Name]
Excitement; I want to know what news my father has sent to his most beloved son.
My mother and I are quite close.
I have a younger brother and sister.
I have expenses too! I send back five crown a month.
I shall decide on a case-by-case basis.
4th Troop, under Lieutenant Findlay.
With our ranks refilled, we should be attacking. Blogia must be avenged!
I order extra drill until all the men can get it right.
Writing; I begin working on an account of my experiences as an officer.
Investigate the building where the boxes are held.
National Hero – Chapter III
“My squadron is the best in the regiment, I swear it.”
[Optional Questions]
“I’ve no questions. Might I go to brief my men?”
“Of course, Your Grace.”
“Tell the men that they can relax.”
[Optional] “Staff-sergeant, your advice?”
“Lieutenant Findlay! Dismount your troop and run that rabble down!”
“You thought I handled that well?”
[Optional Questions]
“If there is nothing else, then I bid you good day, my lady.”
[Optional] I ask my Staff-sergeant for advice.
I send a detachment to rush ahead and hold the bridge for me.
Freedom; we’re finally liberated from the confines of forest roads.
National Hero – Chapter IV
I try to turn the tables with a bluff of my own.
[Optional Questions]
Say nothing.
“I trust the King’s plan to bring us victory soon, sir.”
I read the letter from my family.
Yes, I can and I will; I commit my entire income to clearing my family’s debts.
I read the letter from Wolfswood.
I’ll do it. I’ll pledge the Hunters my support.
I read the missive from Grenadier Square.
[Achievement: Worth the Wait]
I want to make sure my men are doing well.
I call a staff meeting and get my subordinates to figure out a solution.
I shall visit Master Garing and see what he is up to.
“I wanted to ask if the new cannon were performing well.”
“I wished to know how you have been settling in, sir.”
[Optional] “Could you tell me how much you would need altogether?”
[Optional] “What would I gain from such an undertaking?”
[Optional] “Surely there are richer, more influential men you could approach?”
[War Has Changed] “Might I take a look at your plans?”
[War Has Changed] “I would be happy to invest in this project.”
[War Has Changed] [Input: 2000]
[War Never Changes] “I am afraid I must decline your invitation.”
I would like to continue writing my memoirs.
I’ll volunteer for the Forlorn Hope; glory calls to me!
[Optional] “How have you been, Cazarosta?”
[Choose Any]
[Optional] “Why do you want command of the Forlorn Hope so badly?”
“Yes, I suppose I shall.”
National Hero – Chapter V
[Optional] “Might I ask why we are to advance in column, sir?”
[Optional] “What are we to do once we enter the city, sir?”
“Surely we might be employed in some better way than as a battering ram.”
Perhaps he has extraordinary faith in our ability?
“No, sir.”
So our victory shall be delayed a few hours, what of it?
…my decision not to wear my armour and knightly sword was the right one.
I will go to look for him.
“Are you quite all right, sir?”
Keane had the right of it; I will keep my men in column.
Lanzerel’s right; it’d be best to spread out into extended order.
This is the moment I have been waiting for.
[Optional] I take stock of the men at my disposal.
I assign men to clear the walls.
Third Squadron and Lieutenant Hawkins.
I assign men to guide reinforcements.
First Squadron and Lieutenant Butler.
I order my remaining men to support the main attack.
I think I shall enjoy cutting through this insolent rabble.
[Achievement: Towering in Gallant Fame]
“When you’ve more experience, such things will come naturally.”
Convince the men to remain under discipline.
I march my men back to camp.
National Hero – Chapter VI
Pride; this is a great victory, and ultimate victory is within reach.
Far too lenient.
“The sack disgusts me as much as it does you.”
“It would be no trouble at all, Lord Renard.”
I request that my entire squadron be honoured.
[Optional] Inquire further as to the circumstances of Blaylock’s duel.
Agree to act as Blaylock’s second.
[Achievement: A Matter of Honour]
“Then I must congratulate you on your victory.”
“You might thank me by next time seeking out my counsel before things go too far.”
I’ll request as many replacements as I can.
[Achievement: Food for Powder]
If the Takarans have come to watch us fight once again, then they are welcome.
“What is your opinion of your visit thus far, sir?”
[War Has Changed] “Not a quaint tradition, a pointless and self-defeating one.”
[War Never Changes] “Tierran ladies are not blessed with the advantages of the women of Takara.”
“Have you done any soldiering yourself?”
“We would have taken the city regardless.”
[Alternate] “It is a moot point, for the enemy did not do anything of the sort.”
[Choose Any]
I would like nothing better than to be his friend.
National Hero – Chapter VII
I shall continue to ride with my officers and men.
[Choose Any]
[Optional] “Are you not capable of holding out by yourselves?”
[Optional] “You are sure retreat is not an option?”
“I note a distinct lack of a ‘d’al’ in your name, Lieutenant Lewes.”
[War Has Changed] A pity; the army could use officers like Lewes, common or not.
[War Never Changes] Even giving a commoner a brevet officer’s rank goes too far.
“Very good, we’ll lend a hand.”
“Perhaps it would be best to allow him to take a look.”
No, I will take charge.
I’ll lure the enemy in, then hit them with a counter-charge.
“You might thank me with a drink once we reach Fort Kharan.”
[Optional] “Blaylock, Findlay, Sandoral, your thoughts?”
[Optional] “Lady Katarina, what advice might you offer?”
[Optional] “Lord Cassius, what do you think?”
“Let us be bold and take our chances; we go north.”
“The alternative would be no less risky, my lady.”
I order my men to mount up and throw the enemy back across the river.
National Hero – Chapter VIII
“I would trust His Excellency to handle himself.”
[War Has Changed] Women officers? Surely it is not such a bad idea.
[War Has Changed] “We must take the long view: this will be an advantage in a generation.”
[War Has Changed] “I have held the opinion for quite some time.”
[War Has Changed] “Then we are of a mind, you and I.”
[War Has Changed] I rather think that we shall get along famously, Lady Welles and I.
[War Never Changes] The proposal is admirable but utterly impractical for a kingdom at war.
[War Never Changes] [Choose Any]
[War Never Changes] “I will, sire; I am committed to the preservation of the current state of affairs.”
I had hoped squadron command to be more ‘dash and heroics’ and less ‘sign on the dashed line.’
“Consider it done, Lieutenant.”
“You may attend, if you relate to me the substance of the discussions afterwards.”
[Achievement: Mentor Figure]
No, now is not the time for it.
Fifty crown would be a fair donation for a man of my position.
“His Majesty has a plan, and we must have faith in it.”
National Hero – Chapter IX
I’m not all right at all; my grief over my father’s death is all but incapacitating.
No armour, not this time.
We can stop them with a good volley or two.
I have a plan, one that will lose us neither men nor time.
Discipline comes first; get the looters back in line before proceeding.
[Optional] “I do not see why an Antari lord would ask after me.”
“Of course. You may lead me to him directly.”
[Optional] “Why would you grieve so at the death of an enemy?”
“I must present to you my compliments; you fought well.”
“Shall you be ransomed soon?”
“Should you want for employment, you may inquire after me when this war ends.”
I think I shall continue working on my memoirs.
“Introduce me to this fellow, Lieutenant. I might be able to talk him around.”
National Hero – Chapter X
A fresh chance to prove my worth, one which I welcome eagerly!
[Optional] “Why can’t you command the regiment, sir?”
“Are you sure I’m ready for this, sir?”
“I’m happy to see Lieutenant Lewes is well.”
[Optional Questions]
“Excuse me, sirs, I have pressing business; good day, gentlemen.”
[Optional] “Do we have exact knowledge as to the numbers and composition of the enemy force, sir?”
[Optional] “How can we be sure that Khorobirit means to attack us?”
“Might I be excused as well, sir?”
“Even in your current state, you might turn your talents elsewhere, sir.”
I wonder if Lord Cassius has any time for me?
Best I take the Experimentals up on their invitation now; I might not have another chance to.
[Optional Questions]
“I should be going. Good night, gentlemen.”
I would like to see the men of my squadron, one last time.
I should at least let them know that I wish them well.
Perhaps Lord Marcus is up for one last game of Tassenswerd.
“Me? But you’ve both held your commands far longer than I.”
I cannot say I am displeased to be respected for my experience.
[Optional] “Must you both be so nervous?”
[Optional] “The Highlanders have not yet replenished their losses?”
“I will give you what advice I can.”
[Optional] “I trust you’ve cleared this with my superiors?”
[Optional] “I cannot allow it; you may be killed!”
[Optional] “What if the Antari see a Takaran diplomat fighting alongside their enemies?”
[Optional] “Why attach yourself to us?”
“Very well, I suppose I’ll need it.”
“Not today, I do not think.”
“Allow me, my lady.”
[Optional] “Why seek to attach yourself to Second Battalion?”
[Optional] “Are you sure you would rather not observe from here, my lady?”
“Good day, my lady.”
[War Has Changed] Perhaps, especially if such machines become more common.
[Achievement: War Has Changed]
[War Never Changes] War without banecasting? Might as well imagine a ship without sails!
[Achievement: War Never Changes]
I cannot spare the men this early in the battle; Hartigan will have to make do.
I’ll send Garret and Fourth Squadron to the Highlanders’ aid.
It’s not right; I should be going myself.
“On the contrary; I would rate our victory to be almost certain.”
“Excellent! I have sat here uselessly long enough!”
Why not use our heavy guns to aid the Experimentals while we go to the aid of the 5th of foot?
We ought to aid our fellow Tierrans directly by reinforcing their line.
“If you would only lead the way, my lady.”
I use a clever bit of manoeuvring to trick the enemy into destruction.
[Achievement: Colonels in Refrigerators]
National Hero – Epilogue
I tried to convince the others to show as much mercy as possible.
I decided that there were better ways to spend my money.
“I shall be inheriting a seat on the Cortes; that shall keep me busy.”
“Why, that is a marvellous idea!”
“Why, of course, I expected this!”
“It was a victory well won, by Royal Intelligence and the King’s Army both.”
Lady Katarina remains not to be trusted, regardless of who her brother is.
[Alternate] If Lady Katarina has Cazarosta’s trust, then perhaps she is worthy of mine, as well.
Proper Gentleman – Prologue

Select save from completed Proper Gentleman playthrough of Sabres of Infinity.
[Optional] I would like to change my character’s first name.
[Optional] I would like to change my character’s last name.
Yes, let me continue the story of this Dragoon officer.
[Achievement: One Last Chance]
Proper Gentleman – Chapter I
“I would like that very much.”
[Alternate] “No, absolutely not.”
“Might I at least have the honour of knowing your name?”
“I see. Might I ask another question?”
[Optional] “Where exactly are we going?”
I don’t have any questions.
[Choose Any]
[Optional] “What reason have you to do this for me?”
[Optional] “What happens if I take your offer and refuse to follow your script?”
“Yes! Absolutely!”
Proper Gentleman – Chapter II
“Surely they cannot be all that bad.”
“Sir, I have been cleared of any wrongdoing at Blogia.”
[Optional] “Sir, might I ask what happened to your legs?”
“I understand, sir. You have made yourself absolutely clear.”
4th Troop, under Lieutenant Garret.
[Choose Family’s Barony Name]
Confusion; my father barely even spoke to me.
Mother is dead, and she has been for quite a few years now.
I have a younger brother and sister.
I send back nothing.
I think Garret’s plan to see to the men’s needs should be followed.
Investigate the building where the boxes are held.
Proper Gentleman – Chapter III
“My squadron is the best in the regiment, I swear it.”
[Optional Questions]
“I’ve no questions. Might I go to brief my men?”
“Tell the men that they can relax.”
[Optional] “Staff-sergeant, your advice?”
“Lieutenant Garret! Dismount your troop and run that rabble down!”
“You thought I handled that well?”
“I suppose you are right.”
[Optional Questions]
“If there is nothing else, then I bid you good day, my lady.”
[Optional] I ask my Staff-sergeant for advice.
I maintain our normal pace.
I try to help the men in any way I can.
Freedom; we’re finally liberated from the confines of forest roads.
Proper Gentleman – Chapter IV
I try to turn the tables with a bluff of my own.
[Optional Questions]
Say nothing.
[Choose Any]
Those pessimists will be eating their words once the new guns are in action.
I read the letter from my family.
No, I’ll give nothing to that arrogant fool.
I read the unsealed note.
I am likely to be roped into some further intrigue.
I want to make sure my men are doing well.
I shall take over training and institute my own approach.
I single out the men most loyal to me for promotion and reward.
I think I shall begin writing my recollections on my military service.
I suppose I best see Lady Katarina and see what she wants.
[Optional] “What purpose would it serve?”
[Optional] “I can volunteer for the Forlorn Hope, but what makes you think I’ll be chosen to lead it?”
“You aren’t giving me a choice, are you?”
“I’ll do it, not for Royal Intelligence but for you.”
Yes, it is. Is that so wrong?
[Optional] “How have you been, Cazarosta?”
[Choose Any]
[Optional] “Why do you want command of the Forlorn Hope so badly?”
“Could I not convince Havenport to allow us both to take part?”
Proper Gentleman – Chapter V
If this delay means a few more hours of life, I take it gladly.
[Alternate] A delay? Now? This army’s incompetence will be the death of us all!
I kept the men in high spirits.
We must leave the wounded and press onwards.
I try to disarm the trap by dislodging the baneseals.
[Achievement: Cannon Ending]
[Achievement: La Route Glorieuse]
Yes, let me restart the current chapter.
If this delay means a few more hours of life, I take it gladly.
[Alternate] A delay? Now? This army’s incompetence will be the death of us all!
I kept the men in high spirits.
We must leave the wounded and press onwards.
I discreetly hang back and let one of my men run ahead and trigger the trap.
I’ll rally the men and rush the gun before they reload.
[Alternate] Cazarosta and his men can take care of that cannon.
We’ll have to pull back to more defensible positions immediately!
[Achievement: To Heroic Deeds of Daring]
Proper Gentleman – Chapter VI
Pride; this is a great victory, and ultimate victory is within reach.
Far too lenient.
The man deserves to know the truth first.
I shall go, of course.
“Good, I want to watch that murdering brigand die.”
[Choose Any]
[Optional Questions]
“Please, carry on.”
Saints above, Cazarosta has outfoxed the bastards brilliantly!
I take the shot.
[Achievement: Find Strellyk, Kill Strellyk]
It’s not worth the trouble; I don’t request replacements.
The last thing we need are point-eared meddlers intruding in our war!
“What is your opinion of your visit thus far, sir?”
“Tierran ladies are not blessed with the advantages of the women of Takara.”
“Have you done any soldiering yourself?”
“We would have taken the city regardless.”
[Alternate] “It is a moot point, for the enemy did not do anything of the sort.”
[Choose Any]
Satisfaction; finally, recognition for my deeds.
[Alternate] Confusion; I hear no mention of Cazarosta, who led the Forlorn Hope with me.
Lord Cassius is a pompous fool, nothing less, and certainly nothing more.
Proper Gentleman – Chapter VII
I shall continue to ride with my officers and men.
[Choose Any]
[Optional] “Are you not capable of holding out by yourselves?”
[Optional] “You are sure retreat is not an option?”
“I note a distinct lack of a ‘d’al’ in your name, Lieutenant Lewes.”
Even giving a commoner a brevet officer’s rank goes too far.
“I’m afraid I’ve more pressing matters.”
[Achievement: Bastard!]
[Optional] “Blaylock, Garret, Sandoral, your thoughts?”
[Optional] “Lady Katarina, what advice might you offer?”
[Optional] “Lord Cassius, what do you think?”
“Given the circumstances, caution would be best; we go east.”
“I’m not doing this for my sake but for your safety.”
I’ll show my men where our countrymen died in order to stoke the fires of vengeance.
[Achievement: Desperta Ferro!]
[Optional] “What about food for our men?”
“We’ll buy from the locals.”
“This is my responsibility as squadron commander; I shall take on the cost myself.”
Proper Gentleman – Chapter VIII
“We should not take the risk.”
Why, this is the first step to Takaran degeneracy!
[Choose Any]
“I will, sire; I am committed to the preservation of the current state of affairs.”
I do not love it, but I mislike getting shot at regularly even more.
“Consider it done, Lieutenant.”
“You may attend, if you relate to me the substance of the discussions afterwards.”
“The King’s plan better be brilliant, for all the grief he’s put us through.”
[Optional] “What reason, specifically, have you for making this request?”
“This is not to be used for some sort of criminal enterprise, is it?”
“Rest assured, Lieutenant, you may always rely upon me for such requests.”
Proper Gentleman – Chapter IX
I am quite well, now that I am free of that miserable scoundrel.
We shall meet them with the sabre and smash them quickly!
Let us see if I cannot rattle their nerves.
Discipline comes first; get the looters back in line before proceeding.
[Choose Any]
[Optional] “I do not see why an Antari lord would ask after me.”
“Of course. You may lead me to him directly.”
[Optional] “Why would you grieve so at the death of an enemy?”
“I must present to you my compliments; you fought well.”
“Shall you be ransomed soon?”
“Should you want for employment, you may inquire after me when this war ends.”
I shall call upon and spend time with a personal acquaintance.
I shall call upon Lady Katarina.
“Surely, there must be fuel for purchase somewhere.”
[Choose Any]
[Optional] “Do I have a choice?”
[Optional] “And I shall be free of Royal Intelligence forevermore?”
“For you? Anything.”
Proper Gentleman – Chapter X
“Then I am glad Grenadier Square had the judgement to offer their support.”
[Choose Any]
“Then you shall have me.”
“I trust you have a plan, sir?”
“What sort of garrison shall we be facing, sir?”
“Everything depends upon us taking this fortress, sir?”
“Why is taking this fortress so damned vital?”
[Achievement: The King Calls for Wetwork.]
“Then let us see it to the very end, together.”
A final inspection will sharpen the men up a little.
I’ve no objections; holding the yard will be safer than storming a keep full of Antari.
I form the men up in close order around the gate.
“Stand firm! Hold the line!”
[Choose Any]
[Achievement: Terminal Lance]
Yes, let me restart the current chapter.
“Then I am glad Grenadier Square had the judgement to offer their support.”

I’ve no objections; holding the yard will be safer than storming a keep full of Antari.
I form the men up in close order around the gate.
“I want your troop to shoot the girl, Lieutenant.”
[Achievement: Just Following Orders]
Shoot them all; I don’t want them to be brave.
“Good. I only did what needed to be done.”
Proper Gentleman – Epilogue
I tried to convince the others to show as much mercy as possible.
I decided that there were better ways to spend my money.
“I do rather like soldiering; perhaps I shall persist in it.”
“Why, that is a marvellous idea!”
“Why, of course, I expected this!”
[Choose Any]
[Achievement: Chosen Men]
Done;) “Tierra and Victory!”
In closing, I hope this guide has been helpful for you, whether for seeking achievements, setting up a solid character for Lords of Infinity, or simply to enjoy the game like a book. It, and its prequel, are excellent tales and hopefully this has only served to increase your enjoyment of them. The Dragoon Saga series is off to a great start with these two books and looks set to be a fascinating and unique set of stories.
