The Lore and Theories of Undertale!

Overview

This guide will give you insight on the lore and theories of Undertale, things you might want to know. More will be added as I go along, and also, feel free to tell me anything you’ve got!Don’t like? Don’t read. I will not tolerate haters, because if you don’t like it, don’t read or comment, unless it’s CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIZISM.

Papyrus isn’t self obsessed; he has low self esteem

I’ve seen some people hate on Papyrus because they think he’s self obsessed. THIS ISN’T TRUE. Papyrus is a character with low self esteem, but shows otherwise. He does want to make lots of friends, but is scared they won’t like him for who he his, which is why he cares so dearly about the friends he has now, as he states after the final puzzle before you Snowdin, where he says he should “appreciate the friend he’s already got”, which is Undyne.

He shows such a self loving personality because that’s what he wants to be; someone who is able to love themselves as much as they love others!

… He’s kinda like me, actually.

Sans is depressed

Sans may seem like a joking around kinda guy who loves his skelebro, but he has a secret to hide; he knows that you, the fallen human, have determination to Reset, just like Flowey did, and he, in a sense, ‘remembers’ the resets. That’s a pretty simple fact; most people know this. But, this is where Sans’ depression comes from.

While he doesn’t remember the Resets as memory of seeing what happened, he does know they happened; which means that, in one of these Resets, his brother and friends may have died. Of course, maybe he does remember some by sight, but that isn’t confirmed.

There’s also the fact that Sans makes a lot of references to “giving up”. For example…

“just give up. i did.”

“all i know is, seeing what comes next, i cant afford not to care anymore.”

“getting to the surface doesnt appeal anymore, either. because once we do, we’ll just end up back where we started with no memory of it, right?”

That last one shows that he knows the Resets exist. And the fact that he said he “can’t afford not to care anymore” means that he gave up caring at some point. Oh and, one more thing…

“you’ll never see ’em again.”

Sans is refering to losing someone… Who? Who will Sans “never see again”? *Gaster’s theme intesnifies???*

In the Neutral Run, Alphys either runs away, locks herself in the True Lab or suicides

Now, this one is delving into theory, but is still a high possibility. Alphys, too, is depressed like Sans, but hides it away and forgets about it much better. What with all the lies she’s made, she’s scared that, if people find the truth about her (for example, Undyne) then people will hate her.

In the Pacifist Run, she goes with Frisk and everyone else up to the surface and lives a happy life. In Genocide, she evacuates everyone. But in Neutral… Where does she go? The stress she felt from her lies may have caused her to decide to hide in her True Lab; meaning she’d never have to reveal herself. Or maybe she ran away to start a new life, with full honesty. Or maybe…

Her favourite place to go is a spot in Waterfall where it’s… well, a waterfall. One with a biiiiiig drop. The save point with the mounds of trash and the massive waterfall in game is her special place, somewhere she can be free and space out; but, with a big long drop like that, it’s also a good place to end your life.

Sad as it is, Alphys may have had too much stress and fear from her lies and decided to fix it the bad way; either way, this is still theory, but it’s good to hear this because it gives you a little more insight on Alphys.

Sans tried to travel back in time before the Resets

In the back of Sans and Papyrus’ house, there is a secret room you can get into (I’m not gonna tell you how, figure it out yourself ;P) and there is a blanketed machine that looks like a time machine. Sans worked on this so he could go back in time to try and stop the Resets before any of them happened, so he would never have to witness the things he saw again, and also to fix the timeline.

As he says in the Genocide Run during his battle, he “gave up trying to go back a long time ago”. This long time ago, was the time when Flowey had the ability to Reset. This means that Sans has seen all of these things happen before. The friendships, the deaths… And he tried to go back so stop it, but never succeeded.

Napstablook isn’t the happiest little ghost either

Napstablook once had a very close ghost friend, but this friend was… I guess you could say “built” into being Mettaton, by Dr. Alphys. Mettaton, now having fame and fortune beyond his dreams, abondoned Napstablook, and forgot about him.

This caused Napstablook to feel that he wasn’t good enough, and began to grow low self esteem. He became shy and solitary, not talking to anyone, and feeling he wasn’t good enough to be anyone’s friend, as it shows several times throughout the game.

W.D Gaster

W.D Gaster… A mysterious character, who is surrounded by theory and speculation. Who is he? What part does he play in the game? And why is he here?

If you mess around with the Undertale game files, you can get a strange hallway with a gray door to appear in Waterfall just after the room with the crystalized cheese. In this room is a strange black and white man. Interact with him, and his smile grows wide and he disappears, never to return.

Is this man this “W.D Gaster”? I mean, he must be, if his sprite exists. But the better question is… How is he linked to the game? Many believe he is linked to Sans and Papyrus, or at least Sans.

Some say W.D Gaster is there father. Some say creator… And some say he’s Sans’ tutor. All we know for certain is that he was the royal scientist who worked before Dr Alphys. So maybe he created Sans and Papyrus? Or maybe he worked with Sans to figure out how to break the barrier… Or what Alphys tried, which was to bring fallen monsters back.

But, again, this is all just theory, and I certainly believe that W.D Gaster is linked to Sans. But in what way? Will Toby ever reveal any information to us?

Undyne may have been given a dose of DETERMINATION

As we find out in the Pacifist run, Alphys has been doing research to see what happens when she injects monsters with DETERMINATION. The result, unfortunately, is that, while they may come back from the dead, they eventually melt into undescrible creatures.

So… What if Alphys injected a little bit of DETERMINATION into Undyne? If you do a Neutral run, and decide to kill Undyne, she will begin to melt after surviving after death at the very end. Could this mean Alphys did try that? Maybe she didn’t give enough, and that’s why Undyne still died. But who knows?
