Know your SOUL colors(and SOUL attacks)

Overview

Welcome readers to my Undertale guide. In this guide I’ll explain the different types of SOUL colors and attacks you may find during your journey.

Red SOUL

This is the default color. In this mode you will be able to move around the Bullet Board with the directional keys/analog stick/directional pad, as if you were in a top-down shooter. This mode is present in most enemies.

Blue SOUL

This color has an unique yet quite familiar mechanic. In this mode, your movement will be restricted to the area you are standing on, i.e. is affected by gravity. Your keyboard/gamepad setting will be the following:

Left/Right: Move left/right
Up: Jump

The height of your jump will depend on how long you hold the jump button. This mode resembles the side-scroller platformers mechanic. If you are familiarized with Super Mario Bros games, then you will have from little to no problem getting used to this. This mode is introduced by Papyrus the Skeleton.

Green SOUL

In this mode, instead of dodging attacks, you will have to deflect them with a barrier. The controls for this mode are:

Up: Move barrier up
Down: Move barrier down
Left: Move barrier left
Right: Move barrier right

Getting used to this mode is kinda tricky, because the projectiles come at random speeds, and sometimes you may encounter inverted projectiles. When attempting to block an inverted projectile, this will spin around you 180 degrees before facing you. Check carefully which direction are facing the projectiles, if they point towards you, block them straight. If they point towards the direction they came from, rotate your shield. While your SOUL is green, the Flee option will not be available. This mode resembles the stepmania-like games and similar mechanics. This mode is introduced by Undyne, the Leader of the Royal Guard.

Purple SOUL

This mode is kinda tricky, while you are purple you are trapped inside horizontal spider webs.
Controls:

Up: Move 1 line up
Down: Move 1 line down
Left: Move left within the line
Right: Move right within the line

Most projectiles come through these lines, form left to right or viceversa. And at a certain point, the Bullet Board will scroll downwards, forcing you to move up. This mode resembles the Frog Crossing mechanics. This color is introduced by Muffet the Lady Spider.

Yellow SOUL

This mode will result very familiar to bullet hell/Galaga players. It uses the same controls for the Red SOUL, with one addition.

Up: Move up
Down: Move down
Left: Move left
Right: Move right
Z button: Fire

When you press the Z button, you’ll fire a projectile upwards. In order to fire another, the former must:
-Hit the enemy projectile
-Go off-screen if it misses

Certain projectiles will trigger various effects if they collide with your own, most of them can be used to your advantage. Few enemies can be hit with this, but they will not receive HP damage. This mode is introduced by Dr. Alphys during a battle against Mettaton. This is the only mode in which your SOUL points towards the enemy.

Explaining SOUL attacks

From this point on you will learn the different types of SOUL attacks and how to deal with them. Acknowledging them in time is just one more step towards victory.

White SOUL Attack

These attacks will appear in most parts of the game, they are the most easiest to learn. If your SOUL collides with them, you will receive damage. You can’t block or destroy them, but you can avoid them. Sometimes, you may encounter things that don’t look like projectiles. It’s still not recommended to approach to them, or make them approach to you. These attacks are introduced by Flowey the Flower, at the very beginning.

Green SOUL Attack

These attacks have a different property that other attacks lack of. When your SOUL collides with them, you will either heal yourself, trigger some effect or both. It’s recommended to enter in contact with these attacks because some enemies can only be spared through this method. This attack is introduced by the Vegetoids.

Blue SOUL Attack

This attack can be confusing to deal with, but they are easy-peasy once you get used to them. When a Blue attack appears, you must NOT move at all. The attack will phase through you if you stand still. Otherwise, you will receive damage. This attack is introduced by Doggo the sentry.

Additional note: Since the v1.001-on, Blue attacks are no longer pale blue, but electric blue instead.

Orange SOUL Attack

This attack is the opposite of the Blue attack. Instead of standing still, you must move through them in order to phase them. And because of it, they tend to appear along with blue attacks, opening new evasive actions. This attack is introduced by Dr. Alphys when encountering the colored lasers at Hotland.

Grey SOUL Attack

This could be the most difficult SOUL attack to deal with. I recommend to keep reading ONLY if you are fully commited to it. This is NOT for beginners.

This is your last chance to back off.

Ready?

You sure?

Point of no return incoming

Ok then

They don’t do anything, no damage, no move, no nothing. They appear in form of text most of the time 😛

Hardcore BLUE(SPOILERS)

This mode is only introduced in the final Boss battle of the Genocide Route, Sans. It’s the same Blue mode that Papyrus has, with one vital addition. In this mode, Sans will manipulate gravity, twisting the movement controls.

While standing on the left side:
Up/Down: Move up/down
Right: Jump

While standing on the right side:
Up/Down: Move up/down
Left: Jump

While standing upside-down:
Left/Right: Move left/right
Down: Jump

Karma’s Revenge SOUL Attack (SPOILERS)

This attack can only be found at the final boss of the Genocide Route, Sans. It has an unique property, designed to make you have a bad time. It acts both as a poison that drains your life, disabling INVincible frames, and as a safeguard that prevents you from being killed until both bars have been fully drained. As long as you are poisoned, the healing effects from items will be reduced, so it’s recommended to wait until the poison expires. All attacks deal 1 damage per active frame. That means, if you collide with an attack during 1/4 second, you will receive 15 damage. Half a second, 30 damage. 1 second(which seems ridiculous at this point), 60 damage.

Reading this whole guide, even it’s just the most basic stuff, fills you with Determination.

I hope it helps, thanks for reading and stay determined.
